Pennington Will Stay In New York
According to the New York Daily News, Jets quarterback Chad Pennington, despite some rumors, will not be traded. There was some speculation he would be because some felt that the Jets didn’t want or need him anymore with Kellen Clemens ahead of him.
But, it now looks like the two shaky quarterbacks will battle for the starting job in Training Camp.
Clemens struggled in his first year starting, making a lot of questionable throws and only completing a little more than fifty percent of his passes. He’s still very young at twenty-four, but New York’s confidence in him isn’t high.
Pennington has been given every chance to succeed with the Jets. However, every year he starts, he gets injured or is ineffective. The biggest weakness he has is his poor arm strength, which really shows late in games. He also is prone to making bad decisions with the ball, resulting in turnovers.
Now, its obvious that the Jets don’t have the best situation at quarterback. Therefore, they may decide to get one in the draft, possibly even if the first round. If Matt Ryan of Boston College slides to number six, which is unlikely with the Falcons at number three, than they’ll probably either take him or trade their pick. In the second round, there are many decent options, the best being Brian Brohm and Joe Flacco. At thirty-seven, its very likely that they take on of these players.
So, there’s certainly a quarterback controversy brewing in New York. Then again, there has been for three years. Even though the fans think otherwise, the Jets may still have confidence in Pennington, at least more than they do in Clemens. If he performs well in camp and in pre-season games, than he may win the starting job.
