Vikings Miss Out On Rosenfels; Close With Frerotte
After today’s news in the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the Texas weren’t planning on trading back-up quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the Vikings or anyone else, the Tribune has another article up reporting that the team is close to bringing Gus Frerotte back.
Minnesota was very interested in bring Rosenfels in to back Tavaris Jackson up because of two main reasons. One, Rosenfels already has knowledge of the complicated west coast offense, and two, he has shown the ability to start games, which they need, as Jackson is young, injury-prone, and could possibly be benched mid-season.
The latter is mainly why Houston is keeping Rosenfels around. Their starting quarterback, Matt Schaub, is also injury-prone, and Rosenfels will be kept around as insurance in case they need another starter.
As proof of how badly the Vikings wanted him, they were actually willing to give up a third or second round pick for a back-up. Signing Frerotte again was the last thing they wanted to do. He’s already thirty six and doesn’t have a lot left in the tank after playing in eight games for the Rams last season. If Jackson is unable to start, than the Vikings could be in big trouble. Its now possible that they look for some help in the middle of the draft.
The Packers are also interested in Frerotte’s services, and have already hosted a visit with him. However, its looking like he’ll agree with the Vikings sometime this week.

And here we are, signing a below average backup again, and again, and again…

Dieter, this is exactly what they were trying to avoid. If I were them, I’d consider going after AJ Feeley. Rosenfels would have been ideal, though

This is a VERY bad idea! Why not just keep Kelly Holcomb if we were going to sign Gus Frerotte? They’re both bad.
If Rosenfels is unavailable then the Vikes should spend an early round pick on a QB like Brian Brohm (who is now projected to be a 2nd round pick) or possibly Chad Henne. Quit screwing around with over the hill QBs who have nothing left in the tank.
