Osi Believes Strahan Will Retire
The New York Daily News has this quote from Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora:
“I talked to him after the season and I thought he was going to retire. I talked to him a month ago and I thought he was coming back. And then I talked to him maybe a week ago and I thought he was going to retire. It just changes day to day with Michael.”
Osi is obviously talking about his teammate, Michael Strahan, whom is thinking about retiring after he got his first ring. This topic has been debated a lot throughout the offseason, and right now, it’s impossible to really guess what his decision will be.
On one hand, he’s thirty-six, coming off a Super Bowl win, and would be going off on the top on the NFL with a great career.
On the other hand, he’s still a sack artist, and is an elite defensive end who New York fans love.
It’ll be a tough decision for him. The Giants expect it to come by Training Camp, but if he does decide to come back, then he likely will miss the majority of the work leading up to the 2008 season. I can’t imagine that they’re too happy about this, but he’s given them so much and such a professional that they can’t be angry.
Plus, it’s not like he’s holding them hostage like Brett Favre did in Green Bay. Amid reports that he could be a no-show at camp, Umenyiora dismissed that idea and said he’d be coming. And it’s not Justin Tuck is not capable of being a starter, although he’s a better situational pass rusher.
Therefore, their draft plans aren’t affected by him in any way. If they get him back, then great. If they don’t, though, they can still deal with it and try to repeat.
