Saints Closer To Getting Shockey

Jay Glazer of foxsports.com reports that the Saints are cooperating with the Giant’s demands to give up more than a second round pick for tight end Jeremy Shockey, as they’re now offering a sixth round pick for this year’s draft or a fifth rounder for 2009.

The Giants actually wanted safety Roman Harper in addition to the second round pick, but New Orleans isn’t going to do that with a secondary with shaky depth.

So it really appears that the two teams are moving closer to a deal. New York may just be waiting to see if they can get anything more out of the Saints, or if another team can step in. The Saints might give up more, as they wisely want Shockey’s services badly.

Don’t worry if a deal doesn’t come until the last minute in the second round, because it doesn’t need to. As I mentioned last night, Shockey took a physical with the Giants, which the Saints can look at. Unless the Giants change their minds about trading Shockey, I’d say there’s a very good chance he lands in New Orleans today.
