2nd Day Picks

Lets looks at some other notable picks today:

Pick #69 Chargers- Jacob Hester RB LSU
Hester was a fullback at LSU, but he should be a back-up running back with the Chargers. He really can’t start at fullback because he’s not that good of a lead-blocker. He does have some speed and power, though, so he’ll get some carries, along with Darren Sproles.

Pick #73 Chiefs- Jamaal Charles RB Texas
This might be a sign that the Chiefs are not planning on Larry Johnson staying with them for more than the next two or three seasons. Charles should be the second or third stringer, being a nice change of pace, as he has great speed and bounces the ball outside. Kansas City now has a lot of running back depth, which is good considering their shaky quarterback situation.

Pick #74 Panthers- Dan Connor LB Penn State
Great value here for Carolina, as I thought Connor could go in the second round. He simply produced at Penn State, and is a sure tackler. I’m not sure how much he’ll play right away, but towards the end of the season, he could be getting into a fair number of plays.

Pick #81 Cardinals- Early Doucet WR LSU
Arizona needed a third receiver who could go in the slot after losing Bryant Johnson, and they sure got one. Doucet runs his routes correctly with good hands, making him a great guy behind Fitzgerald and Boldin.

Pick #86 Ravens- Tom Zbikowski S Notre Dame
Zbikowski is a physical, hard-hitting safety who has a good amount of talent for going this late. He pursues receivers and ball carriers well too. He’ll be the third safety immediately, and may start over Dawan Landry in a year or two.

Pick # 95 Patriots- Kevin O’ Connell QB San Diego State
Surprising pick by New England. Its not a bad pick, though, as he has good accuracy, a strong arm, and runs well. It appears that the Patriots don’t like Matt Cassel as a long-term back-up to Tom Brady.

Pick #98 Falcons- Thomas DeCoud S California
DeCoud is a solid safety with a lot of experience. He’s not flashy, but he’s pretty polished, so he could start right away.

Pick #105 Chiefs- Will Franklin WR Missouri
Kansas City badly needed a receiver, and Franklin is their new addition to the group. He’s very fast, while also being pretty physical. I’m not sure if he’ll ever be a starter, but on the Chiefs, he could be a nice compliment to Dwayne Bowe.

Pick #122 Cowboys- Tashard Choice RB Georgia Tech
Choice isn’t that fast, but he’s a pretty good runner, and also a strong receiver out of the backfield. He should be a good number three back for Dallas, and could get some decent numbers.

Pick #131 Eagles- Jack Ikegwuonu CB Wisconsin
What a steal the Eagles got. He has first or second round talent, but because of a torn ACL in January and an alleged XBOX theft, he dropped this far. He might not be able to contribute in 2008 because of the knee, but he could start once he gets some experience.

Pick #139 Broncos- Ryan Torain RB Arizona State
Torain has great vision, which will be great in Denver’s zone blocking scheme. Because of a lot of injuries last year, his draft value dropped. Great pick for the Broncos here, he could put up some good numbers in their offense.

Pick #163 Seahawks- Owen Schmitt RB West Virginia
This guy is tough, known for his helmet-banging rampage at West Virginia. He isn’t much of a blocker, so he won’t be a fullback, but he’s a very powerful runner, and could be used in short-yardage situations once TJ Duckett leaves.

Pick #178 Saints- Taylor Mehlhaff K Wisconsin
Mehlaff could possibly beat out Martin Gramatica for the starting job in New Orleans.

Pick #198 Giants- Andre Woodson QB Kentucky
Woodson is known for having a very strong arm and being mobile. He isn’t always accurate and can take a long time to get the ball out of his hand, but this is a good pick. After David Carr leaves in 2009, he could be the number two quarterback.

Pick #204 Dolphins- Lex Hilliard RB Montana
Hilliard is obviously an unknown guy, but he could make the team, being a power-back.

Pick #209 Packers- Matt Flynn QB LSU
Another quarterback for Green Bay. Flynn didn’t have a lot of time to prove himself at LSU, but he’s a pretty good fit in the Packers’ offense. Now, the Packers aren’t as desperate for a veteran quarterback like Daunte Culpepper, although they would have a very young group.

Pick #213 Jaguars- Chauncey Washington RB USC
Washington is a talented back who runs hard with strength. He could be Jacksonville’s number three guy.

Pick #223 Texans- Alex Brink QB Washington State
Brink has poor arm strength, but he’s pretty accurate and good at reading defenses. He could be Houston’s number three quarterback.
