Bears Sign QB Hill

Well, at least they got someone. The Chicago Sun Times reports that the Bears have signed former Southern Illinois quarterback Nick Hill to a deal. Hill thought he’d be going to the Bills with the second to last pick, but they went defense instead.

He saw the Bears as the best fit because they’re the only team in the NFL with just two quarterbacks on the roster. Again, I question why they didn’t take someone in the draft, with the questionable Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton being the only two other than Hill.

Hill actually has some talent. He’s a good pocket passer with some accuracy, and can avoid the pass rush nicely. However, his poor arm strength and bad mechanics scarred possible teams off.

Obviously, its tough to imagine Hill ever being the starter at quarterback that the Bears will likely need in one or two years. He will have a lot of time to learn the offense, though, and his mechanics and footwork can be improved by good coaching. After all, thats kind of what happened to Tony Romo. Regardless, he’ll probably be the third stringer for a few years, and maybe move up to the main back-up role, never really sniffing a starting job.
