Vikings Select Booty
The Vikings traded for the Packers first pick in the fifth round, the second overall of the round, and selected former USC quarterback John David Booty.
Wow, pretty interesting. Booty is a pocket passer, with an accurate arm that isn’t very strong, and bad mobility. However, he proved as a Trojan that he’s a leader on the field, which teams always look for in quarterbacks.
We all knew that the Vikings would want to take a quarterback for insurance in this draft, we just didn’t know when. They get pretty good value here for Booty in the fifth round, as he could have gone as high as at the end of the third.
They wanted another one because they aren’t sold on Tavaris Jackson, who really struggled last year and didn’t show the progression they hoped to see. They wanted a back-up who could start, but had to settle for Gus Frerotte, a veteran who isn’t the ideal person for the job.
Booty, even though he went this late, is actually pretty polished and ready for action, making it a pretty good pick, giving them another option if the other two fail. Remember, you can never have enough quarterbacks, and on a team as good as the Vikings, they need to find one. We could see Booty starting very soon into the season.

Booty is not an upgrade over Jackson at this point. He’s excellent value as a backup with WCO experience, but he’s not starting material. He makes accurate throws, but struggles to make decisions under pressure and makes mistakes with the ball. (Ten interceptions in ten games last year.) After some experience and grooming, though, he could serve as a great backup.
I disagree entirely that this pick shows that the Vikings “aren’t sold on Jackson”.
