Shaun Alexander, Kevin Jones will run for food

NFL.com’s Adam Schefter says free agent running back Kevin Jones is leaning towards a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Detroit Lions gave up on Jones out of concern for his durability. They released him in March and Jones has been campaigning since to show he is recovered enough from his knee surgery to play this season. 

Teams seem skeptical, although four clubs sent scouts to watch Jones work out last Saturday. Tampa Bay, however, was not one of those clubs.

The Buccaneers seem to have excess talent at running the rock. They just signed Earnest Graham to a four year $10.5 million contract extension and brought Warrick Dunn back to the roster after his six year sojourn in Atlanta. Michael Bennett will be in training camp.

Cadillac Williams is trying to get back to playing condition after suffering a torn patellar tendon. Despite the effort, the Bucs are expected to place him on the physically unable to perform list this season.

Jones chances with Tampa Bay are likely tied to Williams’ ability to perform.

It’s a long way from 2005 for former Pro Bowler Alexander the Great. Three time Pro Bowler Shaun Alexander can’t get a bite from another team since his release by the Seattle Seahawks earlier this year.  

He visited the Bengals, Saints and Broncos and told OrlandoSentinal.com columnist Shannon Owens that he’s in contact with seven other teams. Yet, he has no contract just three weeks before training camps open.

Owens wonders if teams are shunning Alexander because he has other interests than football.

No, I think is has something to do with Alexander being over the hill and not adjusting salary demands to reflect the new reality.
