Today’s Notes: Freeney, Tyree, Croyle, Colston, Burress, Sims, Favre

There are tons of quick notes for today, as training camps get underway:

  • Colts’ defensive end Dwight Freeney says he will be ready to go for the season opener, as expected, reports the Indianapolis Star. Dwight underwent foot surgery last season, and, along with Bob Sanders, makes Indy’s defense much, much better.
  • According to the Chicago Tribune, with Devin Hester not present, Brandon Loyd and Marty Booker were with the first team as the starting receivers yesterday in camp. That is just a flat-out ugly situation, one that they need to resolve. Mark Bradley has some promise, but he’s injured way too much to be counted on.
  • Giants’ receiver David Tyree is on the PUP list to begin camp, and it’s not known when he’ll be able to return, says the New York Daily News. He had surgery on his right knee last April, and could have to begin the actual season on the PUP. The Giants won’t exactly be counting on him to make a big impact this season, though.
  • Derrick Johnson told the Kansas City Star that he doesn’t think the Chiefs are rebuilding. Ok, what would you call bringing young players in and shipping the old ones out despite the loss of talent for the present-day? Oh ya, rebuilding.
  • According to the same Kansas City Star, Chiefs’ quarterback Brodie Croyle will get all the starter’s snaps this training camp and will play more in the preseason, which didn’t happen last time when he was battling with Damon Huard for the starting spot. This has to help, but I’m still not sure if Croyle will ever be a good NFL starer.
  • Saints’ receiver Marques Colston missed today’s morning practice with a swollen knee, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. This isn’t a concern, though, as Colston is coming off minor knee surgery in February and will be able to do drills later today.
  • The Philadelphia Daily News points out that rookie receiver DeSean Jackson could be very helpful in the Eagles’ return game, which struggled last season. He’ll also help in the passing game, as he offers speed that no other receiver on their team has- if his small body can stay healthy.
  • As expected, Giants’ receiver Plaxico Burress has reported to training camp despite not yet getting a new contract, the Star-Ledger reports. We’ll see how negotiations go, but they aren’t looking good right now.
  • Mlive.com reports that the Lions are being cautious with linebacker Ernie Sims, one of their best defensive players who is coming off shoulder surgery. This is probably the way to go, as he’ll be ready for the start of the season either way.
  • The AP on ESPN.com gives us the scoop on what happened at today’s Packers’ shareholder meeting. With 9,375 people there, GM Ted Thompson, among other staff members, were applauded, possibly a sign that the people don’t want Brett Favre back and like what the team is doing. I was a little shocked with how little support there is in Green Bay for Favre coming back, as I thought they’d do anything for the quarterback.
