Wide Receiver and returner Dorien Bryant’s tenure as a Steeler a short one

The Pittsburgh Steelers today released former Purdue wide receiver and return man, Dorien Bryant, after he reportedly failed a team physical on Friday. The move was a bit of a surprise, as several NFL teams sought his services after the draft was over. Bryant was the rare prolific receiver and return man, reminding many of Dante Hall.

The Steelers have yet to disclose why Bryant failed his physical, perhaps to allow Bryant to potential to sign with a different team. It probably won’t take long for Bryant to find a team willing to take a risk on his vast potential. Of course, that failed physical will play a major part in that.

Pittsburgh is actively seeking another potential free agent to take Bryant’s place in the special teams competition.

Too bad. The kid seemed to be a football player.

we should allow him time to heal, could be a better risk then what rossam did last year. but that is just me thinking!

I think the obvious reason is this kid failed a drug test. I hate to speculate about things like this, but what else could there have been?

It is interesting to say the least. Anyone that saw this kid play…knows he is a gamer. He had skills to return…but more importantly, he looked to be a guy you could bring in and gadget with a bit.

I’m not saying I agree with Jay 100%, but you have to at least look that way. It’s hard to believe that someone who didn’t seem to have a known injury at all during his career…would have something that would scare away Pittsburgh.

Maybe he was just too small. Docs took a look at him and said - “You can’t send this kid out there, he’ll get killed!”. ;)

Yep, first thing in my mind - drugs. Sorry, but that’s the only thing they’d drop you like a hot potato over…

The Steelers FO should have signed Darius Reynaud the WR/KR from WVU.

A big mistake IMO……..the kid will do a lot of good things for the Vikings.

And why even keep Willie Reid around if he can’t return kicks and punts??? The roster doesn’t have room for another small bench riding WR.

I know Dorien personally. Very talented but has many character flaws, the most is he arrogant as hell. In his mind he is the best that ever did it. Most of this is pumped up BS from his mother. And the drug thing don’t rule it out. Alot of players self medicate especially when under pressure. Being a big shot NFL player is all he and his mother thought for him. He snubbing the NFL because he really felt he should has been in the draft (1st round) - arrogance. Without humility failure is sure to come - in his case it came more quickly than most. I still wish him luck - and hope another team gives him a second chance - maybe this setback will humble the little fellow.

As a Purdue season ticket holding I have to say he was one of the most frustrating players I’ve ever watched. He has tremendous quickness and breakaway skills but was probably the weakest player around. He won’t catch over the middle and had the shortest arms I have ever seen when a defender was nearby. He got some boos over his weakness more than once at home. He also made negative and arrogant comments on his web page about the team going to the Motor City Bowl. Apparently it was below him.

Ok… 1st He did not use drugs. he has a minor injury and that is why he failed his physical. The Steelers should have still gave him a shot.. the comment out about the Motor City bowl was back in forth w/ a friend who was saying he was dissapointed about his bowl game. N besides going to the Motor City Bowl your senior year… that does suck. Yea he is arrogant but name one good receiver in the League who isnt. You have to be in order to produce. Oh and Angel you are a hater. You claim you know him but nothing you said is true. Maybe you should get your facts together.

Jolly, you said name one good receiver in the league who isnt arrogant. Here’s one for you, and he would of helped Mr. Bryant greatly if he would of not been released,,,,,, Hines Ward!!!! I’m not hating on Dorien, The Steelers need a player like him since they lost Randle El a couple of years ago. I hope he becomes a better man from this. Go Penguins!!!

I sat next to Dorien in high school, real nice kid. I was actually extremely suprised that he did not get drafted in the late rounds. He has unbelievable athletic ability and I believe hell do just fine in the NFL
