The Steel Tradition
Roger Goodell allows Steelers’ to stone Bill Belichick
In a strange move on Wednesday morning, Roger Goodell has allegedly allowed the Steelers to take care of Spygate in a very unique way. In an alleged press release from the NFL offices, Commissioner Goodell reportedly stated that the Steelers would be allowed to stone Belichick outside of the Steelers’ South Side facility. The Steelers would be allowed to use any or all of the quarterbacks that have played for the Steelers since Terry Bradshaw retired to take part in the stoning. The rules were simple. Each former quarterback would be allowed to throw one stone at a time until they missed. The Rooneys wouldn’t comment on Goodell’s alleged release, but the Steel Tradition was on the story, and were on site when the stoning occurred earlier this evening.
Here’s the play-by-play:
First up was Cliff Stoudt. This former Steelers’ starter looked fresh in his old age as he walked up to Belichick. Stoudt walked up to the line, when a siren went off, bringing on a series of fans wearing ‘STOUDT AIN’T BRADSHAW’ shirts, and quickly whipped out a Stoudt dummy, and burnt it in effigy. He was last seen running out of Pittsburgh, heading towards Birmingham, having not thrown a rock.
Next up was Mark Malone. He was looking sharp as he walked up to the Belichick line, ready to hurl his pile of stones at the New England coach. He lobbed his first throw towards Belichick, then, remarkably caught up to the weak throw himself, caught it, and ran 90 yards the other way. Again, his only throw didn’t meet it’s intended target.
Up came Steve Bono, who was the Steelers starter during the 1985 strike. This former scab quarterback was stoned himself, while standing on the line waiting to throw his first rock.
Bubby Brister looked like he was ready to play again when it came to his turn. He was sacked six times before he got a throw off, and by that time, he was seeing triple. His only pass went the exact opposite way Belichick was standing. Then fell again. He almost stopped before his first throw, when he was handed the ball. Thinking the referee was trying to sack him, he fell, fumbling the rock. He recovered, however, and was allowed his one throw.
Neil O’Donnell strolled up with the poise of a Super Bowl quarterback. His throw was 10 yards outside of Belichick, and was picked off by Romeo Crennell, who was there in support of his old coach. He reportedly ate the rock.
Mike Tomczak took over for O’Donnell. The scrappy quarterback drilled Belichick with 25 straight stones. Of course, his 15 MPH throws barely made a mark.
Jim Miller was given a chance to throw, then was pulled as starter while walking up to the line.
Kordell Stewart was next. His first throw went over the 40 foot high wall that Belichick was standing up against. He then made a commercial. When he was given the option to receive a pass from O’Donnell, and plow into the former Browns’ coach, he refused. “I’m a quarterback,” he said with a smile, “…not a receiver.
Mike Quinn was allowed only one throw. The New England coach breathed a sigh of relieve when Quinn missed by a foot, and watched the ball go straight through the wall with his cannon-like arm.
Kent Graham was kicked out of the competition, when nobody could remember who the hell he was.
Tommy Maddox was brought in, and nailed Belichick with his first throw. He then disqualified himself to sell Belichick an insurance policy to protect him from stoning.
Finally, Ben Roethlisberger walked up to the line. Just before his throw, Goodell reportedly showed up at the stoning, and quickly put a stop to it.
“Roethlisberger is currently a player in the NFL. What do you want me to do, suspend him for public stoning?”
Go figure, Goodell lets Belichick off the hook again.

Actually, Goodell didn’t show up until well after Ben was supposed to throw. Roethisberger felt a kink in his back while warming up. While he was bent over trying to loosen the kink, his knee buckled and he pitched forward jamming his hand full of stones into the pavement and sustaining some serious contusions. An ambulance arrived, but Ben shook off the medics saying he was fine. Unfortunately in the process of moving away from them he tripped over the stretcher on the ground and pitched head first through the passenger window of the ambulance. But it could have been worse.

Yeah, a receiver couldn’t throw the 80 yard Bomb that ignitd the miracle at Michigan. You Pittsburghers are something else. Your just too bitter to accept a blac QB. Get over it. I guess he shul have just kept his head down and answered yessuh, yess’m. Please. Mark Malone, Cliff Stoudt,David Woodley an Tommy Maddox all performed worse–but you just ca’t get off Kordell’s back. He did special things fr the organization that noother QB will ever, EVER accomplish–give him his props!!

Hey AngryBlakSteel,
One 80-yard bomb do not a quarterback make.
James blasts 11 ineffective Steelers qb’s, but insults Kordell only because he’s black? Hahaha - you guys crack me up! Lose the chip and get a life!
Funny piece, man. Keep it up.

WOW! who’s the real racist BlakSteel. he blast all those other qb’s but it was racialy motivated for him to blast kordell. You sir are a racist and a moron. Plus Kordell did pretty much suck most of his years. he should have been a receiver, he was better at that and his career would have longer and moe succesful. I guess I’m a racist now to.

Man the tone of this blog has changed a lot since I started reading it. The Steelers are a premier organization with a very solid history from the early 70s. To read this blog since their injuries started them on a skid in the later part of the season you’d think we were rooting for the Arizona Cardinals or something. This is from the writers not the users posting comments. You writers have really changed your tone and it frankly isn’t fun to read anymore. I think I’ll read Steelers stuff somewhere else.
May 15th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Whoa, guys. I thought it was all hilarious. The key is that Belichek is a jerk. The stuff on Ben was creative and he is the most current favorite son. I think everyone was equally dis’d. Loved the Romeo Crennel thing and not because he is also black. Come on Blaksteel, you missed the railroad porter analogy. I also thought they should have given Randal el a chance too just based on his SB touchdown pass

I’m black and I’ll tell you Kordell was not a very good quarterback. He WAS probably a better reciever. I don’t see ANYTHING racist about the story. I digress because some people “went there” though. Not everyone is racist. Though I can tell you that Pittsburgh is a racially divided city. I have been all over the U.S. and you Pittsburgh has the most segregated communities I’ve seen. You can readily recognized outsiders because they interact with other ethnicities in a much more open manner. In Pittsburgh people talk to a person of another race 5 or 6 times a week and tell people they have a (what ever race the person is) friend. A friend is a person that you share life with, not menial conversation. I’ve seen it with my own eyes…people that say they are not racist and do and say some racist stuff. I’m not playing any cards. I’m just stating facts.

Tmac, the key to being a good, true fan is 1) to acknowledge shortcomings instead of believing that your team was robbed when then go 8-8 (or worse) repeatedly, and 2) being able to take the hard times in stride. Jim wrote an excellent tongue-in-cheek post here, pointing out that we have one of the best QBs in the league, but only after a long line of mediocrity.
Tell me what has changed? The fact that Jim and I cover things as they are, without being Steeler PR machines? I, for one, wish that was the case in MORE Steeler blogs. Management cannot gauge fan satisfaction if everyone on the planet speaks the company line. We, as fans, owe it to the team to not be content with anything less than another championship. In turn, the team owes it to the fans to consistently prove that they are making every attempt to improve on previous success.
If you want to root for a team where mediocrity is celebrated, there are two teams in our division a little west of Pittsburgh who will welcome you with open arms. I, for one, will only be placated by another shiny Lombardi trophy. And another. And another…
May 15th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Being ONLY placated by another Lombardi trophy is setting the bar a little high don’t you think? So the Patriots didn’t have a good season last year? Or the Chargers? Or the Colts? What about the Cowboys and Packers. Sure the Patriots and Colts have set the bar a little in their organizations but to expect a championship every single year and anything else is unsatisfactory is asking for disappointment.
The ton since the later half of the season has been very negative and very bitchy. That usually expected from the users commenting but not entirely from the writers. It has turned from a cool place to read about the Steelers from Steelers fans to an online version of talk radio.

Funny! Very funny!
Now…. What’s the deal with Arlen Spector? Doesn’t this guy have anything better to do with his time? Slumping economy, rising gas/food prices perhaps?
Congressional investigation of Baseball and steroids was valid, because of illegal drug trafficing and use. Cheating in the NFL is not illegal. Congress and the government should butt out!
From the Post-Gazette:
“‘Evidence of winning by cheating would have the inevitable effect of undercutting public confidence in the game and reducing, perhaps drastically, attendance and TV revenues,’ Mr. Specter said.
But beyond the congressional antitrust exemption granted to the NFL, he said lawmakers also have an obligation because the public trust is involved.”
If the NFL loses the trust of its fans (i.e., its customers), then the fans will solve this problem on their own by not patronizing the league anymore. This is about good business, and it’s the NFL’s job to manage public confidence in the product it’s trying to sell. If the NFL fails in that regard, its fans (i.e, its customers) will stop buying it.
Spector is wasting his and taxpayers time.

I’m with you Mike, I am stuck up in patriots country (NH) and never even thought of jumping on their bandwagon. Just as a true Steeler fan would never jump on either cleveland or phily. I wear my allegiance with pride, including the decals and STLRFN van vanity plate (mounted in the steeler frame just so these pats jerks don’t miss the message). Two years ago the pats lost their first game to the bills, in fact got clobbered. They were diving off the bandwagon in droves. So whether they are bad (1-13) or great 5 rings, they are my team. And I will criticize if justified, but realize the odd shaped ball do bounce in funny ways. Even when asked about “Spygate” (hundreds of times by pats fans), my response was “that’s belichek”, 22 players still have to execute and 5 officials have to make the calls. Doesn’t matter if they taped the coaches or Jenna Jamison. Much ado about nothing, just like spouting race crap on a football board!
May 15th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I’ve heaped praise where praise is due. Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t get the appreciation he deserves outside Pittsburgh, and I’ve repeatedly pointed that out. I spoke highly of Alan Faneca’s play in spite of knowing he was on his way out. I stood at the blackboard and covered the lesson in linebacking that James Harrison put on in the first game against the Ravens. I praised Aaron Smith for his immense contribution to the defense, which was made obvious in his absence. I spoke highly of Willie Parker’s production, but criticized their ability to punch it in for six on the ground, and deservedly so.
I write here because the Steelers are my passion. If I see a problem, I’ll point it out. But come on, this is a team that lost five of its last six games, couldn’t muster a pass rush after week 12, and has an offensive line that spent the second half of the team being nothing but offensive. I don’t think Jim or I ever once nit-picked for something negative to write, but this is now the offseason. It’s a time for fixing what went wrong, and the first step to doing so is identifying the areas of need. We’re here to discuss the issues facing the team, and in my admittedly humble and generally worthless opinion, I think we’ve done a fantastic job of doing that.
And, yes, if you set the bar low to make your goals easier to achieve, you are doing nothing but shortchanging yourself — whether it’s in sports or in life in general.
May 15th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
As a Steeler fan since the TB era. I thought your quarterback analysis is spot on. And clever. Except now that we have a decent quarterback the next joke will be on the offensive line.
May 15th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Hey clowns, the ones that called blackSteel a racist. First off, I didn’t call anyone racist. I just said you guys had a hard time accepting a black QB as the team’s leader. All of a sudden everyone throws out the reacist term and then point it at me. Let me schoole you: blacks can never be racist–at least until we’re the major race in this country. We can only be prejudiced. Only the majority race can turn prejudice into systematic, oppressive racism because of the numbers. Get that through your thick skulls!
Steve Young was a heck of an athelete and could run like crazy–nobody ever said he should play WR.
For goodness sakes, Mark Malone was in the Steelers record books with the team’s longest TD reception for some time. After he became a starter nobody said he should play WR.
In Kordell’s first year he throew for over 3,000 yards, 21 TDs and ran for 11 TD’s–plus led the team to the AFC Championship game. He was young, he made mistakes but he always made plays that could change the game in our favor at any time (two 80- yard scrambles, and a plethora of 25 yard plus scrambles and TD runs. He took us to two AFC Championships–who else besides Big Ben and Bradshaw has done that? Yet he wasn’t a very good QB huh?
Then the next year they loose his number one target yancey Thigpen (1300 yds receiveing) to free agancy.
What if they took Rice and TO from Young; or TO or Witten from Romo? The organization should not let a young QB loose his go-to man so early.
All I’m saying is that he gave us so many electrifying, memorable plays and games–he deserves more respect than he gets from you bitter Pennsylvanians.
You’re a bunch of Benedict Arnold’s you cheered him and loved him as Slash–but when he got the leadership[ position many of you prayed for and contributed to his downfall by hating.
May 15th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
If the articles were written like you more recent post Mike then I wouldn’t come to this site expecting to see another “OMG how dumb are the Steelers!” post. The articles however are just talk radio but on the internet. Kudos to you if you think that is well done.
I don’t think enjoying my football team only if they win the Super Bowl is the best bang for my buck. I can probably spend my Sunday’s a different way then spend them pissed off my team didn’t go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl every year. You come awful close to insulting me with your last paragraph but hey, if it makes you feel better.

That is possibly one of the most ignorant statements about race and racism I have ever read.
May 15th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
I just remember Romo slapping his own helmet in front of Kordell when he threw his second interception into triple coverage “Doah” says Romanowski.
I did love KS as slash. But then he had to read defenses as a QB, and we were sunk. BTW, KS lost both championshp games.
Now don’t be bitter, AngryBS. I suggest you go to church and ask for peace in your heart. There’s this church in Chicago, I belive it’s called the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago’s South Side. Why not go and worship with some like-minded people?
May 15th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Actually he’s kinda right but only when it applies to the country as a whole. The minority can’t project prejudice towards the majority. That doesn’t make a statement less racist.
And then George tries to make a point and then comes off like a complete ass in his last paragraph. Well done sir, way to take the higher ground.

Hey guys,
Although I thought the article was funny and poignant, why not make fun of other teams. I love the Steelers and appreciate a good tongue in cheek once in a while too. I believe this might be slightly old news (no pun intended)—oh, btw, Black Steel and Blaster and Tmac…Relax and enjoy life….
NAPMAN and GERITOL
I was sitting in my apartment when the senescent news seemingly ripened before my antiquated ears: Ralph Wilson, the eighty-seven year old owner of the Buffalo Bills was bringing back, no, not from the dead, just bringing back fellow eighty year old former Bills head coach, Marv Levy. You know things are really out of whack when it causes Mularkey to fly the coop. This dynamic duo, Napman and Geritol, will crusade around the facilities while constantly needing to use the facilities. I suddenly felt moved to go online and look up life insurance even though I’m only 34 and my girlfriend, who was busy knitting a scarf, looked up from her craft and asked, “When did you put on, The Lord of the Rings?” as she mistook Ralph Wilson for Gollum. It’s then when I realized, “How appropriate, old, balding vultures literally circle the wagons!” and things might not be that bad after all. Bingo nights and 15 miles an hour below the speed limit in, solid food and unaided erections out. Post-game interviews would go something like, “What was crawling through your mind during that feeble pass attempt while being pursued from your blind side?” “ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!” “Can I quote you?” The salary cap would be loosened via social security which would make more room for the salary cap which would be loosened via social security…oh, God, now it’s happening to me too. When asked if bathroom breaks would be an issue a spokesman responded with, Depends…no need for orally cumbersome mouthpieces without orally necessary teeth, light blue parking spaces by the thousands and cheesesteak milkshakes, mm-mm! Jerry Falwell the new commissioner? Delays of game on every snap, and all-pro ballots replaced with last wills and rites…and so on ad infinitum. One cost effective gimmick with a degree of efficiency: at the end of every game, applause will shut off stadium lights……
In a cold sweat I wrinkled from my incubus as my alarm, tuned in to sports talk radio was announcing something which made me want to hibernate like Rip Van Winkle: Ralph Wilson was bringing back Marv Levy….

BlakSteel, your comment is absolutely ridiculous. Obviously, if you are going into a piece where I nail every quarterback from 1980-2004 and picking out the Kordell statement as the main piece, you are just plain reaching. Talk about delusions of grandeur. The only thing I have a problem with is the mediocrity at the quarterback position after Bradshaw, and before Roethlisberger. Now if you want to get into it about the talent surrounding those players…feel free. The problem with your argument is that Neil O’Donnell did just as much as Kordell, except, oh yeah, he actually GOT THEM IN THE SUPER BOWL once before blowing it, and came a couple of yards short another. Oh wait, you didn’t bring him up because it didn’t suit you. Instead, you talk about Malone, Woodley, Stoudt and Maddox because it suits your argument. Give me a break.
As far as beating Michigan. I loved that game as an Ohio State alum. I’ll start commenting on it as soon as this blog turns into a college blog.
Oh, and I mentioned Malone’s 90 yard touchdown reception, and his weak arm, long before your comment, right here in this piece. Of course you’d have to read the whole thing to know that. Oh wait, it didn’t suit your argument either.
As far as being a Kordell fan, or not being a Kordell fan, that wasn’t what this piece was all about. Just for the record, since you asked, I thought he was a pretty good starting quarterback, with a penchant for electrifying when he didn’t handcuff himself by refusing to run when he could, or refusing to run some gadgets here and there. A real “leader” would have done that. You talk about Steve Young. He was extremely talented, and Kordell was definately in that mode. What frustrates me is that I thought Stewart had MORE talent, but didn’t utilize it because he was to busy trying to prove he could be a passer. I get it, there’s a certain stigma. At the same time, it probably ultimately cost him his job. I wouldn’t have started Maddox…ever…ahead of Kordell, even though he looked horrid in 2003. It was probably the right move, taking him out, but at the time, I didn’t want it to happen.
Now, I’m a bitter Pennsylvanian? You couldn’t be further from the truth.
Look, I’ve been writing for more years than I can count. I’m pretty alright when people take what they want out of a piece. At the end of the day, right or wrong, it’s what it’s all about.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Funny how all Steelers QB’s where poked fun at but the one black one gets all the attention.
Kordell was not a good QB. Any QB that cries on the sidelines is not NFL material.
Lose the chip, get a life!
May 15th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
TMac–
I’m a Steelers’ fan…period…end of story. I’ve written about the Steelers for a long time, and I bleed black and gold.
I never really thought I’d have to apologize about actually thinking the Steelers should win the Super Bowl EVERY YEAR. I know I wake up every morning of every winter, spring and summer thinking about the Steelers running onto the Super Bowl field. Until today, I thought that most Steelers’ fans felt the same way. Why? I don’t know, maybe because I’ve been part of the Steelers community for the better part of my life. I’ve never lived in Pittsburgh, just for the record, but have been to enough games to know that I’m not the only one with those expectations. I’ve been to enough Steelers’ backers meetings in enough Steelers’ bars to know that there aren’t a whole lot of Steelers’ fans that are happy with a decent, middling year that ends by losing to a team that you know you can beat, injuries or not. I’ve been around the beat writers and bloggers long enough to know that the Steelers’ community is one of the only mid-market, blue-collar communities that HAVE Super Bowl expectations every year, even after a sad sack, 8-8 season that made me want to pull my hair out. Was I happy with the improvement? You bet your ass I was. Was I pissed off that we lost to the sad-sack Jets? You bet your ass I was. Was I pissed that we lost to the Cardinals? I don’t care where it was, you bet your ass I was. Wait, let me guess, I should have spun those as positives? I should have hopped in line and said, “Whisenhunt was hungry for this, and Arizona responded.”
Sorry, but that’s ridiculous. If you want to BE BETTER THAN THE PATRIOTS, you win those games. Of course, you could be happy with the playoffs every year, and getting our asses handed to us by the Pats, or the Jags, or whoever else we lose to.
Should we have lost to the Ravens? Oh yeah, they are our rivals, and they get up for us, even though OUR PLAYERS ARE SUPERIOR.
I heralded Mike Tomlin long before the Steelers picked him at my old blog, and thought it was a great pick…but have no problem saying that the young coach might be in over his head for awhile. No problem at all. He makes mistakes, and thank god, has that audacity to admit it when he does.
I have no problem calling it like it is.
As far as this site being a ‘radio talk-show.’
Nice try, but it’s not even close. Even if it were, I’d be fine with that. I’m not trying to be anything other than a fan. If I don’t like something, I’m gonna say it.
If I want to make a take on the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick in a fun way, that rolls over some pretty sad-sack quarterbacks since Bradshaw, that might have some humor…I’m writing it.
If I want to call it like it is about Roger Goodell banning players for being thugs off the field, but fining a team the equivalent of a few cents in NFL money, and taking away only a draft pick, and the lower of their two draft picks to boot, for transgression on the field, than I’m writing it.
Of course, THAT’S RADIO TALK SHOW BANTER?
Yeah, of course it is. The Steelers were talking about how the Patriots were calling the Steelers plays in 2002 from their sets. You really think that’s just great coaching?
Don’t kid yourself. Belichick was crap in Cleveland. He said he only did it since 2000. Hmmmmm…when did New England start winning under Belichick?
Yeah, that’s a negative piece on the Steelers.
As far as what New England fans, or Indianapolis fans think about their season…just ask them.
Would I have traded places with them?
You bet.
Would I have been happy not to win the Super Bowl.
Not a chance.
Of course, that doesn’t make me a unique Steelers fan at all.
Honestly, I never thought in all my years of talking Steelers’ football, that I’d actually have a conversation with someone about being happy with lesser expectations than a Super Bowl. Even in the rough years of the latter-Noll regime.
Tmac, I can’t make you stay, and I won’t try, but good luck finding a site that placates to being okay with anything less than the Lombardi.
Being happy, and content are two different things.
This isn’t a Cleveland Browns site. Being happy and content may be a place in the playoffs over there…
but not here…
I’m happy with the playoffs every year…
but content?
Not a chance.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
When did I write I didn’t want the Steelers to win the Super Bowl every year? When did I say I didn’t think at the beginning of every year that the Steelers didn’t have a great chance to win the Super Bowl? (Okay maybe not so much in 2004, it didn’t look so good at the beginning but turned out okay) There is a difference between wanting to win or even expecting to win a Super Bowl and having “winning a Super Bowl” as the only acceptable outcome. The latter leads to quite a bit of disappointment.
My issue is this blog has been overly negative for the better part of a year now. I don’t listen to junky talk radio because of the overly negative tone. I like this blog, you guys do a pretty good job for not being paid. But I don’t want to spend my time reading what’s turned into negative drivel. From fire Arians to how dumb it was to draft Dixon to let’s rehash the missed play the refs in the Jags game not once or twice but with three posts. As is missing a call on one play was the outcome of the football game. Or I could come back and read yet another posting about Belichek and his cheating. Sure bringing it up when the Steelers play the Patriots, great. Bring it up when the Steelers even talk about it fine but you guys bringing it up hasn’t been limited to that.
The Steelers do actual negative things, fine write about those. I’ll read those articles and be a great poster and supporter. The Steelers have the leading rusher and a QB who throws more than 30TDs, yeah that is a great time to fire the OC.
The stud QB lays an egg in the first half with 3 INTs, the special teams allows an 80 yard return, and the offense can’t make one first down late in the fourth. Write about the Steelers messing those things up, I’ll read. Write yet again about how the league blew that call at the Garrard run just makes you sound like Seattle Talk Radio.
You guys are good, just be less negative about things that aren’t actually negative.
May 15th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
About Kordell, during the regular season he was a pretty damn good QB, he was the Mike Vick of the 90’s. Its when Kordell made it to the playoffs, he didnt have the confidence in himself to recover after making a mistake..he would go into this mental funk and you could tell if you were a Steeler fan! Granted his only good receivers during his career were Yancy Thigpen(Tupac), Plaxico and Hines with a bunch a mediocore talent in between his Steeler career. It really didnt matter though because he could not hit any of them in stride!!! If Kordell’s ego didnt get in the after a failed experiment at QB, he should have moved back at WR were he probably would have become a Pro Bowl receiver.
PS…I love the Steelers and HATE all of you! Stop bickering or go buy Chad Johnson jerseys!

“Being ONLY placated by another Lombardi trophy is setting the bar a little high don’t you think? So the Patriots didn’t have a good season last year? Or the Chargers? Or the Colts? What about the Cowboys and Packers. Sure the Patriots and Colts have set the bar a little in their organizations but to expect a championship every single year and anything else is unsatisfactory is asking for disappointment.”
I can safely say that I’m disappointed every year the Steelers don’t win a Super Bowl, and I can safely say that it’s pretty damn unsatisfactory. No, obviously I don’t think they can win it every…wait…yeah…I do. I want them to win the damn thing every year. Is it realistic? Hell no. Somehow, it doesn’t stop me. To do anything less makes me a Ravens fan, or a Browns fan, or any other fan, of any other team that doesn’t have yearly aspirations to win.
I don’t know any Patriots’ fans that walked away happy last year. Not one. At least not one that I take seriously. To me, sports is about winning the whole shebang. In a rebuilding year, I want to win the Super Bowl, and if they don’t, I bash the hell out of every stinking, rotting player that causes them to lose, the coaching staff, the owners, the stadium, the fans in the stands that are sitting on their asses, the ones that leave early. I blame the parking attendants. I throw out the Steelers’ clothing I have on. It’s a Jinx you know.
I hold damn grudges.
Then, a week later, I’m refocused on trying to win, get better, whatever. Luckily, I haven’t had to worry about that much over the years, because the Steelers win, a lot. But the playoffs don’t make me content. So I suppose I am disappointed a lot. Rare is the day you find me strolling down the street saying, what a great year, I’m not disappointed in losing twice to THE DAMN JAGUARS ON OUR DAMN HOME FIELD. Sorry, it still makes me want to freakin’ puke.
Yeah…I bashed the Dixon signing the day they picked him.
Then I wrote that horrifically negative Dixon piece a couple of weeks later, talking about how he could be a steal if it pans out…and about how much character the kid has.
Fire Arians? Now, I may not have posted here a lot over the winter, but I did read the pieces. I don’t recall a continuous overtone of ‘Fire Arians’ from the writers. I’ll be the first to admit that when he makes a call that sucks, I talk about it. At the same time, I don’t recall making or reading many posts calling for his job either. Of course, the day after losing to the Jets, I’m relatively certain that I probably wanted to get into some sort of MMA match with him about the offense looking like a can of crap.
We have several writers here, and at the time of the Jags’ losses, there were what, five of us? At the time, there were two brand new writers, and one that had returned after a six month layoff. This isn’t a newspaper office where the five of us got together and said, “Hey, lets just let one of us hammer the hell out of the Steelers’ offense for blowing the game.” There were five of us, all fans, and I’m guessing, all pissed off about losing. If you don’t want to read three posts about it…then don’t.
If you think this blog is overly negative, than you are just picking out what you want to. That’s fine. I’ll be the first to tell you that that’s the whole point of writing and reading. Find what you want. Just don’t try and sell it as the only thing that you find here. You talk about the negative tone of Dennis Dixon, and I thought the second day of the draft was worse than the first day. Of course, I ranked the entire draft a B I believe, and placated a poll that led to an A/A+ ranking. You picked one part of it that was negative. I didn’t like the Davis signing at the time, because what I knew about him AT THE TIME was that he’s fast as hell, but gets hammered by big and fast linemen. Something that last I knew, was prevalent in the NFL. Is that being negative, or just stating a fact that sheds some light a bit on the potential of a player.
I don’t know many fans, or writers who are going to highlight the positives of losing a game. They may talk about some good parts of the game (as we do here), but the overwhelming sentiment in any article about LOSING shouldn’t be, “Well, we were injured, so there is an excuse.” Of course, I’m sure you’ll find a bit of that here as well.
I’m sick of the New England drivel as well.
I wrote a piece about it last week. It wouldn’t go away, so I tried to write something that was moderately amusing about our lack of quarterbacking for 25 years, to add a bit of light-heartedness to it.
Last I knew, it was the offseason. It’s not like there is a multitude of new things to talk about. Of course, you can still find that here as well, since we are posting new content every day.
When the Steelers PLAY the Patriots, the last thing I’m going to talk about is SpyGate. What I’m going to talk about is KICKING THEIR ASS. If they don’t, I’m not going to whistle dixie about it either, and I’m sure as hell not going to e-mail Mike, or whoever else writes here at the time telling them not to either.
If that’s negative, so be it.
My criticism of the coaching staff starts and ends with the offensive line coach…but I don’t go out hammering him just yet because he had to deal with injuries.
I think Willie Parker is underrated. Should I then say the Steelers DON’T need Mendenhall? Isn’t it negative saying that Parker should share the load because he’s not a typical Steelers running back?
Roethlisberger had an awesome year last year. The line had more holes in it than swiss cheese. If I say they need help, is that negative to the line? Is that negative to the offense? Is that negative to Parker? Is that negative to Roeth? Shouldn’t the coach be responsible for fixing it? If they don’t have the right players, or the depth, who do I blame? God? The Devil? The Michelin Man? Mike? Myself? You? Is it nobody’s fault?
If I wake up one summer day, wanting to slam Mahan for playing center like Mike Webster’s ex-wife, should I not because it’s over and done with?
I haven’t talked about Garrard at all since they lost to the Jags…thinking about that game makes me want to freakin’ puke. But I may again…and I wanted to when they signed that joker this offseason.
I don’t listen to Seattle talk radio, or anything about Seattle talk radio. Still, if they make a good living bitching and moaning, maybe I should send them some of my stuff, so I can make a few bucks.
At the end of the day though, anyone that says I write overly negative stuff as a whole, doesn’t really read all of my stuff.
Anyone that says that this site has written overly negative stuff for the better part of the year, doesn’t really read all of the stuff here.
Is there negative pieces at this site? You bet there is. Will there be in the years to come? You bet there will, and I guarantee you I’ll be the author of some of it. Hell, maybe all of it.
I’m a fan, and when they lose, I get pissed off. Sue me. That’s what a blog is for…
…for us fans to get it all out.
I didn’t start writing here to be the next Mark Madden, but it’s fun to bash him when he deserves it.
I didn’t start writing here with aspirations to write for anyone other than myself. If others read it, and for some idiotic reason, they do, great. If they agree, fine. If they don’t, also fine…as long as they don’t agree with it for the right reasons.
Look, I don’t rightly care if you like my stuff or not. I’m just glad you come here, happy or not. I can say we get along enough to like the same team, and that’s fine by me.
Hate my stuff…let me know…
…because at least it gives us something to talk about.
If we all agreed about everything…it would be pretty damn boring around here…don’t you think?

Danny–
I just ordered my Ocho-Cinco jersey.
I want to be ready to sell it to the Arena football league hall of fame, once he earns it…
May 15th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Again James write about the negative stuff when its applicable, I’m all for that. Writing yet again about the Jags or how awful the Patriots organization is, I’ll find waste my time somewhere else.
Since it seemed to be a little too subtle the Seattle talk radio comment had to do with Super Bowl XL. The Seahawks fans, all 12 of them, maybe 7 of them, still say the refs gave the Steelers the Super Bowl. Is that really the type of fans we want to be compared to. The refs didn’t miss two field goals, open up the biggest hole at the line in Super Bowl history, or leave Hines that open. Just like the refs didn’t throw three picks or not convert on a key third down vs. the Jags.

Ahhh, I posted about it way back when…
…the comments coming from some of the major press outlets anyways…
at my old blog…
Once I find it…I’ll link you to it…

Being a Steelers fan since 1970, I found very amusing. Lets’ face it - there were some very tough years (i.e. the 80’s).
Sidenote to Arlen Spector: Shut the &%#$ up and concentrate on your job. People are losing their jobs and their homes and all you care about is whether a football team videotaped hand signals? I hope the fine people in your state put things in proper perspective for you next time you run for re-election - let’s see if you give a flying fug about hand signals when you’re looking for a job.
Hint: It’s the economy stupid.

MS: ignorant statement? Maybe you’re so used flipping the racist tag on minorities you simply can’t grasp my lesson. In short, yes minorities can be prejudiced but what does the majority care when it controls the social, political, and economic elements of our country. On the other hand the majority can use racism (it’s an institution not simply a label) to deny bank loans, job applications, home loans, lenient judiciary discipline, college acceptance, and in general authentc equality. Minorities can’t, regardless of how the feel, use the insititution of racism to negatively impact the majority–get it. If not I’ll try special-eduction break down next.
TMAc-thanks for tyring to shed some light on this groundbreaking revelation/explanation. Some just wn’t get it, because they don’t want to.
Bill–name anoher QB otherthan Bradshaw or Ben that led to team to 2 AFC championship games. not a good QB–he made a pro-bowl or two albeit as an alternate–but Fred Taylor insn’t mad at that.
Pete–none of this is directed at you dude, just some of the posters.
Now the reason Kordell had so much success his first year (21TDs, 11 TD runs, 3000 yards) is because of the innovative ways Chan Gailey utilized him. Gailey was the lone O-coordinator that new what a rare gem he had in kordell. Unfortuneately Gailey took the head oaching job in Dallas the next season. What QB doesn’t have to go through the growng pns of reading defenses. Remember Ben had 21 int’s in the 8-8 season.
No other O-Coordinator was able to utilize Kordell’s unique skill set the way Gailey did. Pete–that’ why he started staying in the pocket more–he was coached to do so. He served as the blueprint for Vick. His coaches were smrt enough to let him do his thing and win and nt tamper with his strong points.
By no means am I saying he’a Hall of Fame –but he revolutionized the position and proved to all detractors that a scambling QB could lead his team to great things.
Bill TO cries all of the time but still catches about 70 catches and 14 TDs per year. It jut shows that you care.
My rsponses were not triggered by this one artice but by the plethora of negative comments fired towards Kordell by many fans that make guys like Stoudt, Woodley, and Maddox. Petetis isn’t about O’donnell–it’s about Kordell.
Here’s t hoping that the Steelers do it big nex season I’ve beena fan for 30 years through all of the ups and downs and bleed black and gold!

I started reading this blog then it started to remind me of the 5th grade which I finished two years ago. OMG some of you are lame.
Go Steelers
May 16th, 2008 at 8:34 am
Blaksteel, go through the list, we Steeler fans have crapped on every quarterback we ever had. Well, not certain about Bobby Layne, but I remember the boos for Terry Bradshaw and that was after he won a Super Bowl. It’s not about color man, Joe Greene and Jack Lambert are equally loved and respected by every Steeler fan I ever met.
On another note, for everyone, in the world of the salary cap and free agency the expectation of winning the super bowl every year is totally unrealistic. Look at the pats, 18-0 and then lost to the Jints. This is a “sh*t happens league. I am happy to sweep the North, shutdown that big mouth Chad J (Ocho cinqo my ass), and severely whip the pats ass. (Which by the way gets you at least to the level of the AFC playoffs and further if you consider the pats will be there.
I also agree…it’s the O&D lines man. Added depth in the backfield is more than welcome (especially one that can take a screen all the way). But I think the linebackers are probably one year away from being outstanding (Timmons, Woodley, Harrison, Foote, Farrior). If we can keep away from the prima donna type play of A. Smith, this can be a hell of a defense.
Got it all…except special teams sucks and by the way usually does in the ‘burgh’ need I say…Troy Brown.
Just my opinions, I could be wrong.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:01 am
James, what a great, funny piece. People just don’t laugh enough!
But I think the best thing said in this entire thread is Mike’s comment that “if you set the bar low to make your goals easier to achieve, you are doing nothing but shortchanging yourself — whether it’s in sports or in life in general.” Thank you so much for saying that.
We train ourselves and our even children to take just enough risk in life so as not to fail. I believe that mediocrity is accepted and even encouraged because true success is second in people’s eyes to the pride of never failing. Quoting Tomlin, “The one common bond that the really successful people I’ve met have is they’re ridiculous dreamers. I’m a ridiculous dreamer. Continue to dream. Don’t let the reality of the world diminish those dreams.”
So, yes, teams have rebuilding seasons (decades?), but if the end goal for a player or coach at training camp each year isn’t the Lombardi trophy, then they need a new job.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:40 am
I can not stand new england, bill belifag and the fuking steelers.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:31 am
What is it with all this racism stuff? This article is hilarious, just leave it at that. And by the way BlakSteel, KORDELL STEWART SUCKS!!! He sucks, and that is the bottom line. Next to Neil O’ “let’s make Larry Brown an MVP” Donnell and Tommy Madsux, I can’t stand him the most. Fact is some people, no matter how much success they had in college, are just not cut out to play QB in the NFL. Or should I say, they can play the position but they will not be productive. Oh yeah, by the way, I’m black. So don’t say I have a problem with anyone leading the Steelers. It’s a team sport and all I want is to see them hoist the Lombardi trophy in February. I don’t care who it is……..as long as they don’t suck like…..KORDELL!

From Websters dictionary:
1)a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2)a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3) hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
Sounds like BlakSteel fits #1 and the #3 definition of racism!!! So it DOES seem minorities can be RACIST toward the majority of the country, according to the definition of racism.
Oh and by the way, discrimination based on race for loans, jobs, college, and just about everything else is ILLEGAL! I don’t know if you know that or not, but an actual Federal Law was signed back in the 1960’s. So I guess your “whitey’s keepin me down cuz of my color,” argument has now been destroyed.
In short: by definiton, BlakSteel is a Racist!!! Along with anybody else how shares your racial intolerance and hatred NO MATTER WHAT COLOR!!!
May 16th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
I expected to read in this article another beat down of Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
I was surprisingly amused the article made fun on the Steelers. I guess Goodell and the NFL does love the Pats to make even bloggers turn on their own. I think Bill had tape of the QB’s and was prepared for his defensive moves if it came to that.
The Steelers have a great team and I like Tomlin as coach. So as long at Ben stays healthy you are one of the teams to beat in 2008.
I expect the Steelers to be in the playoffs and one of the few teams in the AFC that have a team on paper that looks like it can win the AFC Championship.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Steeler fans are bitter towards Kordell Stewart because if he had been willing this guy could still be playing reciever for them. Instead he has been out of the league for about a decade.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
BEN SUX! ATLEAST MARK MALONE WAS HOT WITH A HOT WIFE. I HATE THE STEELERS. GO PENS!
May 16th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
THE LEAGUE NEEDS TO SUSPEND BILL FOR A SEASON, AND MAKE HIM APPLY FOR REINSTATEMENT JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE WHO KNOWINGLY VIOLATES LEAGUE POLICY. I HAVE SEEN DOUBLE STANDARDS BEFORE, AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM. THE NFL SUCKS WHEN IT COMES TO DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS ON HIGHER PERSONEL, IT TELLS EVERYONE ELSE THAT IF YOUR A COACH, THEN THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT, BUT PLAYERS ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIER ACTIONS
May 16th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Steel City King:
Clarence Thomas is black too, btw.
May 16th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Steel city King II
(21TDs, 11 TD runs, 3000 yards) the aorementioned was accomplished in the NFL not the NCAA.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

Dude you are demented. First off I NEVER CALLED ANYONE A RACIST. I said “you weren’t ready for a Black QB (not lineman, e.g. Mean Joe green). Then all of a sudden somebody’s guilt, and “me I’m not a racist, I have black friends” built in defense mechanism kicked in and started throwing the R word around. So dude please.
What’s up the the whitey keeping me down bull–I’ve owned a 4-bedroom home and a successful business since my twenties. No man of no color can hold my jock strap, no less hold me down. Get it right or shut the %$@* up!
May 16th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Yeah David bellichick should be suspended but maybe 4-6 games. The fine is a joke. Taking the lesser of 2 #1 draft picks was hillarious.
For goodness sakes teams have lost first rounders for tampering no less.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
So Blaksteel: “Blacks can NEVER [my caps] be racist.” Lessee: I’m an Ofay married 38-years to my sweet, black bride. This may or may not be longer than you’ve been on Earth. No matter.
Your point must be that we’ve “imagined” the dumb-as-a-sack-of-hammers crapola coming from both sides of the racial divide. As recently as this morning. Swell! Thanks for setting us straight.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Clarence Thomas is living proof that “black” is a state of mind. It’s CLASS and not RACE my man. Always was. Male property-owners could vote in the election of 1800. By 1847 and Dred Scott they couldn’t. Thus endeth the history lesson.
Cheers,
May 16th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
What pisses me off is the NFL gets an anti-trust exemption, and all the tax money spent to build stadiums makes the NFL in my opinion directly accountable to WE the people, so those trying to minimalize this are nuts! I want answers!!! They knowingly cheated period and I’m sorry the punishment did not fit the crime.
The NFL has been more severe with behavior issues, (and they should be hard on that) but they were way to easy on the Pats, and an example NEEDS to be set here.
Oh and Blak Steel, your right, Kordell did do some amazing things for us… unfortunatly he was not consistent enough. I along with many think he had the tools to be an all pro WR if he had chosen to do so.
All in all, I liked him, but as a QB he was too up and own to stay.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Just for the record, Pittsburgh wanted to continue using him in an innovative way…
Kordell didn’t want to be innovative…he wanted to be a pocket passer.
It was his choice…
May 17th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
yeah everyone give kordell stewart his props, he was a great GIMMICK QUARTERBACK. the man was blessed with great hands as well as great speed but could NOT read pro defenses. But thats is where his “greatness” must end. I’m NOT a rascist in ANY way but kordell is exactly like every other WHITE quarterback we had after Bradshaw and before Big Ben, he couldnt win the big game at the Pro level. Its hard to win the game when you become color blind (jersey colorwise)
May 17th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Hey BS,
I, a man of “no color” am 6′2″, 245, and I used to box professionally. I guarantee you that I could not only hold your jockstap but actually tie it around your neck, you racist pig. Unless you’re Mike Tyson, in which case I probably couldn’t…
People like you are the reason racism still exists in America today.
Lose the hatred man, before it totally consumes you.
May 17th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Quarterback droneing,
Quarterback stoneing.
Bradshaw & Big Ben,
Quarterback atoning.
One thing though-has anyone noticed how Bens attitude has changed from his humble attitude to now?
History reflects a quarterback phenon from the L.A. Rams who after winning his 1st. Superbowl in humility then bragged that he wanted to be the 1st. Qb. to win 5(YES, FIVE) superbowls!!!
He was 2nd. fiddle after that!
Ben might want to remember that he went undefeated with decent but not outstanding yardage numbers his first season. With a decent defense and complimentary running game Pittsburgh will be S.B. Champs again.
I remember a talented but discontent individual who hurt the team more than helped them because he wanted more passes thrown to him and Pittsburgh never made it to the S. B. while he was with the team. He got traded to the N.Y. Giants and with a new contented attitude and the same superior skills he helped lead them to a super bowl upset of the Patriots last year.
Ben is a tremendous athlete, but if he insists on desiring to have the top yardage statistics he will get them but I don’t believe we will see a S.B. with 4,000 yardage Big Ben.
Ben needs to go back to being content simply with a high Q.B. rating and with championships. After all I believe T. Brady only had something like an 86% rating his first 5 years or so! Even look at T. Bradshaw. Championships not yardage numbers is what counts.
May 17th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Sorry about using a name already in use. I did not realize that another Bill had posted, and the post just previous to this was my first.
BTW I sort of remember another Q.B. who had a decent first year but then began bragging about how he was going to be in the “Hall of Fame”(after ONLY one year)! Kordell was extremely gifted but was really a good runner who just so happened to also have a good arm.
May 19th, 2008 at 11:15 am
George–I’m scared, not–lol. Obviously you lack the I.Q. to contribute anything of substance to this post. That’s unfortunate.
May 19th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Easy everybody have you not seen that life provides with plenty of revange? time will come that the Steelers will humiliate the Patriots and go on to win more Super Bowls just let the time come it is just adding sweets to that day, wait, wait
