What’s this about a Pens-Steelers rivalry? GO PENS!!!
There’s been a ton of talk about a Penguins and Steelers rivalry over the past week in the major Pittsburgh media. In some of that media, there’s been the suggestion that the Penguins have overtaken the Steelers as Pittsburgh’s favorite sons. I’m not here to talk about how utterly ridiculous that is. The fact that it’s even being discussed shows you the major disconnect between some writers and the fans that they write for. You can’t just listen to radio heads, and you all know who I’m talking about, and take it for fact. If I remember correctly, the Penguins changed their colors from blue and white to yellow and black, in honor of the Pirates, and most especially, the Steelers. No, it wasn’t a battle in a fire pit for the right to the colors. Since then, the Penguins became champions, like their Pittsburgh cohorts. Since then, the Penguins became a real part of the Pittsburgh culture. Since then, Penguins fans, WERE Steelers fans. They still are.
Today, the Pittsburgh Penguins shut out the Philadelphia Flyers, and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since King Mario’s heyday, in 1990-1991, and 1991 and 1992. Congratulations on the Penguins from all the Steelers’ writers here at MVN’s Steel Tradition. It’s not about competing against the teams in your market, it’s all about supporting them.
LET’S GO PENS!

I agree, it is about supporting all teams from the Pittsburgh area. It is foolish too suggest there is a rivalry. Everybody that is from Pittsburgh knows the Steelers are number 1. There is not a close second.

Right, I’m a supporter of all Pittsburgh teams, but the Steelers are my number 1! I’m delighted that the Pens are in the Stanley Cup finals….but it’s just not as exciting for me as the Steelers in the Super Bowl.
Now, if we could just get the Pirates to have a winning season……

They could play a game of baseball against each other to see who rules. Either of them could probably beat the Pirates in a baseball game.

Let’s face it. The Pens have earned their way into our hearts. I mean Right Dahnn Tahnn! Not just Mario, but ALL those years in the bigloo. The Stillers have had their off years and the Bucs have a history of ups and downs. But we luv’em. Now our boyz in black are coming to the top again. They always will. We always will. That’s us. They ARE us. Not just in a single sport, but in our CITY! You gotta love ‘em. GO PENS!

Penns and Steelers are part of what makes Pittsburgh great; both High Powered beloved teams. Now yesterday watching this inept guy Dumatrait walk Cub after Cub was a pain almost too had to bear. I love Freddy and McLouth but please find some guys that can pitch.. PLEASE!!!! Watching Pirate baseball is really making me dislike the Chicago Cubs

Steelers, Penguins, Pirates. Or, Penguins, Pirates, Steelers. Or even, Pirates, Steelers, Penguins. It doesn’t matter. They are my teams. I don’t have a favorite NBA team because Pittsburgh doesn’t have one.(Thank God)
I don’t live in Pittsburgh anymore, so I don’t know exactly you are referring to when you say that certain talking heads are promoting the idea of a rivalry. I do have a guess that I’m pretty sure is right. That guy has been a muck raking idiot since he first watched Bruno Samartino on Saturday mornings. Although, he was not alone in his feeling that he had to choose one team over another.
I remember the early 80’s as being a time when the Steelers weren’t so good anymore and a few of the older boys in my neighborhood were looking for their own identity. An identity that was separate from their father’s. One way a few of the more pro-social ones did it was be proclaiming how only losers were Steelers fans. The REAL team was the Pens. Now, anyone who remembers the Pens of the early 80’s can see how ridiculous a statement this was, but teenage boys will do anything to go against their fathers…even claim that pro-wrestling is a sport… and write a column about it.

I LOVE THE PENS, MAN, THEY HAVE BEEN PLAYING AWESOME LATYL, AND THAT 6-0 DRUBBING OF THE FLYERS WAS JUST GREAT. HERE WE GO TO ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP. NOW WE JUST NEED TO GET THE PIRATES TO JUMP ON THE PLAYOFF WAGON TO THE WORLD SERIES! BUT WATCHING THE PENS IS AS FUN AS WATCHING THE STEELERS, BUT MY FAVORITE PITTSBURGH TEAMS IN THIS ORDER.
1. STEELERS
2. PENGUINS
3. PIRATES.
ALL MY FAVORITE PRO TEAMS ARE ALL IN PITTSBURGH. GREAT TRADITION WITH ALL 3 OF THESE CLUBS, AND I HAVE LIKE THEM ALL SINCE THE MID 70′S….. AND IM NOT EVEN FROM PITTSBURGH, I LIVE IN DELAWARE.

I am a Pittsburgh fan — I don’t even live in Pittsburgh. The Pens, the Steelers, even the Pirates make me proud! Wow! If I never see another Stanley Cup, a Super Bowl, or a World Series, I have experience it all!
Do you people understand what you have here?
