Davenport to be cut
According to ProFootballTalk, the Steelers have, or are planning to, cut Najeh Davenport after failing to find a suitor on the trade market. Of course, the only person who may not have seen this coming was his own mother. The Steelers added Mewelde Moore during free agency, and then picked up one of the top running backs in the draft when Rashard Mendenhall fell into their laps in the first round. With Willie Parker appearing to have recovered nicely from his broken leg and two young guys — Carey Davis and Gary Russell — still available at bargain prices, there’s just no more room at the inn for the Dump Truck.
Cutting Davenport would save the team about $1 million in base salary this year, leaving his salary cap hit at just $202,500.

What will they do on short yardage? Davenport was a great third down back and contributed an several key plays last year.
They will miss him in the short run but will probably be able to get along nicely in the long run.
The move away from a power running can not be good. Especially with a weakened O-line.

Bill, I dont agree. This was obvious that they were going to cut Davenport when they drafted Mendenhall who is a pretty big back at I believe 225.

Hey Mike…
Maybe our headline should have been…
Davenport dumped….
I think Davenport’s days were numbered with his offseason issues. I would be willing to bet that he wouldn’t have been playing here with or without Mendenhall, although that surely made their decision much easier…

They don’t need Davenport. They’ve got a loaded backfield already with Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore, Gary Russel and Carey Davis.
