Titans want to bring Brown back
The Titans didn’t offer Chris Brown a contract after last season and allowed him to test the waters in free agency. Now Tennessee GM Mike Reinfeldt says he hopes they can sign Brown in time for the next minicamp on Tuesday.
The Chicago Bears are also interested in signing Brown and his agent is noncommittal.
I have mixed feelings about bringing Brown back.
One the one hand, he requested a trade last year, which didn’t go over well with the Titans or with the fans. If he didn’t want to be here, why bring him back?
On the other hand, the Titans need a veteran back and Brown brings a lot to the table. He knows the playbook, terminology and the system. Brown can step right in and be a starter if necessary. He’s a good third-down back who’s able to pick up the blitz, run a draw, or catch a pass out of the backfield.
I’d like to hear some of your opinions.

I think that the Titans doing a 180 on CB like this suggests that Chris Henry is not picking things up as quickly as they may have hoped. Regardless of where Brown goes, I don’t see the Titans as much better or much worse off. He does have the experience & decent speed, but his running style is simply more conducive to running the occasional 3rd down draw than grinding out yards the way the Titans like to run. Eddie George was even taller, (not as fast) but always ended runs leaning forward and inflicted as much pain on defenders as he absorbed. Brown looks like a rag doll half of the time when he goes down.
If the Titans want a veteran, they should make a respectable offer to Corey Dillon - he still hasn’t decided anything & likely won’t until much later so as to aviod as much of the OTAs & training camp as possible. I believe Steven Davis is still out there - he could share carries & be a good veteran presence. Also, I don’t know if he is now a FA or still with Houston, but how about Dominac Williams (formerly Davis)? I would prefer either of these guys or waiting for roster cuts to bringing Brown back. Worst case scenario get real physical - line up Ahmard Hall at RB & Hartsock at FB.
If nothing pans out this year, go out and get “The Burner” next year in free agency.

Adam, Stephen Davis is 33 years old and has chronic knee problems. His career is probably over. Domanic Williams also has a serious knee problem and is likewise probably through. Last I heard of Corey Dillon was that he was just sitting around for the time being. Like you, I also heard that he doesn’t want to sign with anybody right now so that he can skip as much of training camp as possible, which sounds entirely plausible.
If Brown decides to sign with the Bears, I don’t know who else is out there besides Dillon. The Titans may have to wait for some roster cuts in late August/early September.

Andrew,
You bring up some good points, but i think chris brown is a waste of money and ultimately won’t bring much to the table except for his time with the system. Yes, when he’s on he’s great, but so is everyone else. He always seems to get dinged up and then can’t do anything. The offensive line has had a hard time finding it’s rhythm when he has been in the back field and he isn’t a very good blocker either. I’d rather take a chance on ricky williams(not that this will ever happen) than go down the road with chris again.
The titan’s need a guy that can pound the rock…Corey Dillon step up and collect your check.

I like what the Titans have done with Brown, they didn’t give him a contract at the end of the season and allowed him to test the market for a new offer. Sure enough, nothing has popped up. With that being said, I think its time that they negotiate a deal and settle upon something. Chris Brown has been plagued with injuries most of his career and now with pretty much a full year off and him resting up, he should look alot more productive this up coming season. Every carry I saw of Chris Brown last season the guy busted out some wicked gains, not to mention he’s the one that came up with that clean block that allowed VY to score that OT run against the Texans. Bottom line is, Id like to see him remain as a Titan, he knows our system and has experience, thats pretty much it! With Lendales work ethic, Henry being a rook’…. it only makes sense.

[…] - Desperate for competition at the running back spot–rookie Chris Henry and second-year cheesecake aficiando LenDale White are really the only viable options for the moment–the Tennesse Titans have offered Chris Brown the chance to resign. Their main competition for Brown’s services seems to be the Chicago Bears. Either way, don’t expect Brown to have much of an impact this season for either team (or your fantasy team). […]
