Intriguing Cowboys who could be involved in Pacman trade

According to recent media reports, the Titans could be acquiring an unnamed Dallas player alongside a conditional draft pick in return for the services of controversial cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones.

The cupboard is far from bare in Dallas, who sent an NFL record 13 players to last year’s Pro Bowl. New Miami Dolphin executive Bill Parcells left behind an extremely talented Cowboy squad that won 13 games last season.

Obviously, Terrell Owens, Marion Barber, or Jason Witten won’t be involved in the rumored Pacman trade. However, there are several talented Cowboys who may be available that could fill positions of need in Tennessee.

Let’s take a look at some of the candidates:

Chris Canty DE

Earlier this offseason, restricted free agent Chris Canty was tendered a one year contract offer for $2.017 million. Canty has yet to sign the tender and is still hopeful for a long-term contract.

As I mentioned in a previous article, Canty is a huge defensive end that is capable of providing a pass rush as well as being adept at stopping the run. He would provide the Titans with an emerging young talent at DE and would allow veteran Jevon Kearse to be more of a situational pass rusher, which is probably a good thing for “The Freak” at this stage of his career.

Acquiring Canty would require a team to pony up a first round draft choice but maybe there is a way to include him in a potential Pacman deal.

One can dream, I suppose.

Jason Hatcher DE

The Cowboys are one of the few teams blessed with a ton of young and talented pass rushers. Hatcher is an emerging player who currently plays behind the likes of Canty, Pro Bowler Demarcus Ware, Marcus Spears and Anthony Spencer.

Hatcher, a third round choice in 2006, has amassed 4 ½ sacks in limited opportunities during his two years in the NFL. The young Cowboy defensive end is 6’6” and weighs roughly 300 pounds, and he would be a solid pickup for the Titans.

Sam Hurd WR, Miles Austin WR

Despite re-signing Justin Gage and landing Justin McCareins in free agency, wide receiver is still considered a position of need in Tennessee.

Sam Hurd and Miles Austin are two young Dallas receivers who may be expendable. Hurd is a tall receiver (6’2”) who caught 19 passes for 314 yards playing behind Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton. Seventeen of Hurd’s catches were for first downs and his 16.5 yards per catch is more than two yards higher than the Titans’ leader last season, Gage (13.6).

Austin is a speedy receiver whose contributions came mainly in the kick return area. In two seasons in the NFL, Austin has averaged close to 26 yards per return. If the Titans’ bid for restricted cornerback/kick returner Chris Carr is matched by the Raiders, Austin would be a candidate to return kicks if he were to be included in the potential Pacman deal.

Bobby Carpenter and Akin Ayodele are Cowboy linebackers who could be included in the rumored trade, but considering the Titans’ strength at the LB position, I have a hard time believing that either player will be in Nashville next season.

    Drex,

Im hanging on every word. Do the cowboys have anybody at DT we would like? I understood on previous news report that the cowboys didnt have anybody the titans were really interested in.

Im hearing draftt ideas that the titans package their picks and go for Harvey( DT from florida) and Sweed.

Ocho news has resurfaced again—are the titans even considering that?

    jrtitans,

The Cowboys already traded a reserve DT, Jason Ferguson, earlier this offseason, so I doubt if they are interested in traded another. Outside of Tank Johnson and Ratliff, they have 2nd year DT Remi Ayodele and Junior Siavii, who has been out of the league the last couple of seasons.

Canty and Hatcher are big DE’s (6′6″ 300) who are capable of playing some DT.

As for Ocho Cinco, he does appear to be trying his best to punch a ticket out of Cincy. Gonna be interesting to see if Cincy management tires of his act.

If they do decide to trade him, I would imagine that the Titans would have some interest, but if he were on the trading block, I think that Philly and Washington would be the lead contenders to land Ocho Cinco.

Not sure if Cincy is interested in trading a great WR in his prime to an AFC team.

    Hey Drex,

Call me crazy but to me this trade doesn’t seem equal. I mean if we can’t get at least a second round pick, or 6th round pick and a starter for Pac, I think we shouldn’t even pull the trigger on this trade. Pacman had his issues off the field and has been a headache to the franchise as well as its loyal fans but consider this, as troublesome as he is, he still is a very talented playmaker who can contribute on defense and special teams. He is arguably, next to De’Angelo Hall, Champ Bailey, and Rashean Mathis one of the best shut-down corners in the league. Second to Devin Hester and equal to Joshua Cribbs in his punt return ability. He is only 24 years old. And call me even crazier but I think a player of his caliber should stay with us until his contract expires. After all the drama he put us through since we drafted him, all the arrests, incidents, “strip club adventures”, I think he owes it to the team and all of us as fans to make nice and play out his contract. His contract ends in what two years? He’ll be a free agent at age 26 or 27 still in the prime of his career, still capable of playing at a high level. That should be his apology to all of us. I feel he owes us two Pro-Bowl caliber seasons to make up for the past 3 years of strife, stress, and embarrassment. I also feel that none of the players you mentioned plus a late round pick on a player who maybe cut before the season starts, don’t even come close to filling the void of a player who can help us win on defense and special teams. The point I’m trying to make is, Dallas better up the ante with a second round pick or a late round pick and a starter to make this trade valid. We really don’t have anything to lose. If he gets in trouble again, the Commish might banish him from the league for good. I’d ask for a 6th rounder plus Marcus Spears. But that’s just me. What do you guys think?

    drex,
what round draft pick do you think would be a fair “trade “for Mr.jones ? alone and what do you think a decent pick with player could be …( i know what happens when we assume ) I think that a 3rd rounder for him without any player is just swap. the WRs are not worth fooling with, j.hatcher and a 5th ,and the lord willing we get canty without losing our first (we give chris his new contract and they get pac-man and a 3rd) … as usale love to read your thoughts …….

I forgot that Dallas has two first rounders this year!!! If I were in that front office, I’d make it known that if you want this guy (and his baggage) Its going to cost you a second rounder or, a late round pick and a starter. If this trade goes down and we don’t get any real compensation, Dallas might as well change their team name to the Bandits, because this would be highway robbery!!!

In an ideal situation, a talent such as Pacman wouldn’t be traded in the first place. Ideally, if he were on the market and was without the myriad of legal problems he has faced, I think he would be worth as much as the 2nd rounder/6th rounder that the Falcons received in return for Deangelo Hall.

Unfortunately, this isn’t anywhere near an ideal situation. Pacman has punched his ticket out of town as a result of his off the field problems, and the Titans organization is finally fed up with his act.

It’s going to be hard for the Titans to get much more than what the Cowboys are currently offering. Even if the pick is a third or fourth round selection, it is very likely that it will be a conditional pick.

If the Titans are going to get a player in return, I’d like to see someone like the players that I mentioned in my article who actually fill a need for the Titans. Spears is another guy who could be involved, but I didn’t include him because I am not sure that the Cowboys are willing to give up on him. I only included Canty because of his contract status and his desire for a new deal.

Pacman and the Titans probably are in need of a clean start. It’s unfortunate that it couldn’t work out, but the situation is what it is. Both parties appear to be very eager to move away from one another.

With the Pacman situation, I think the Titans are just trying to make lemonade out of lemons and move forward. Pacman is also looking forward to a new start in Dallas.

As always, thanks for the comments guys. I enjoy reading and responding to your feedback.

Titans need to say bye to Pacman.Their defense is totally fine without him . I personally think he is an awesome player , but its time to move on.It’s time they pick up some players that benefit the offensive side of the ball. For example , some wide receivers would be nice ! I personally would go for Sam Hurd , he would benefit the Tennessee squad.

  8. tom says:

I personally think that Canty and a 6 or 7 round pick would be an upgrade. Canty is big enough to help out at DT and is good enough to help out Kearse. You put someone as young and talented as Canty with Jim Washburn and a defensive line as strong as ours you could have a star in the making. So i believe that would be ideal, but i dont think its going to happen. What you have to realize is you are trading a player who has a lot of baggage and has not stepped on a field in a year. The nfl is all about what have you done for me lately. Just because pac was one of the most talented return man and an up and coming corner noone knows what he can do because he has not been on the field. So i really dont think we will get that good of a deal for him. In saying that, i think it would be absolutely stupid to just try and get rid of him for nothing just to get rid of him. I say let pac play for the titans. If he is welcomed back by nashville and shows he can play and keeps his nose clean i think he will like to play for us. He just doesnt want to play here because he feels like everyone here hates him. Also, if he does get in trouble again i believe Goodell will kick him out of the league for good so then we wouldnt have to worry about him anymore anyway. My thing is what if we get rid of him for a fourth or fifth round pick just to get rid of him and then he goes to dallas keeps his nose clean and plays to his full potential. We would have lost a year to year pro bowler for what, somone that we draft that chances are wont even be on the team in the next few years.

I understand most of you Titans Fans pain. Pacman became Thugman and sat out all year last year. What a 1st round, six position waste. So, no insults intended, just saying I feel your pain that you want to be highly compensated now that Fischer has essentially fired Pacman whether he is reinstated or not.

Now, look at the this from my Cowboys prospective though. Pacman wants to play for us, but considering his history, not many of us including the team, are as excited as we would be with someone we knew we would have on the field and not in handcuffs. I just hope the kid understands that IF he is reinstated, he has no more strikes.

Ok, now for the trading stuff. We can’t give you any of our productive defensive or offensive players. Though Pacman is talented, there is no guarentee when he will be reinstated, if he will be reinstated or that upon reinstatement, he will not end back up in jail and permanently banned from the NFL. So, we cannot give up more than a conditional 7th round pick and Bobby Carpeneter, one of our former 1st round , 18th overall picks. I think if you get Bobby who is a great ILB and can play OLB, you will be very satisfied. The reason he is not starting with us is because there is two or three pro bowlers playing ahead of him on our team so don’t fret. If we give him to you, consider it a better deal for you. At least Bobby can start for you and play ever game. We will always be pulling out the Dallas Morning news to see if Pacman will be available for the next regular season game or have a picture of him being arrested. So think on those things.

ok wat u guys don’t understand is that of the cowboys make this deal and pacman messes up again he’s gone for good and the cowboys are giving us something for nothing they definitely won’t trade a starter and we’d belucky if we got at best a 5th rounder because this is really risky for the cowboys… And u really think they’d trade canty a team leader for someone who is still suspended and if make one more mistake is gone for good?!?!?!?! Cmon be logical!!!!!

PacMan is a joke as a man and a hyperactive thug as a player on the field…I know he had a ridiculous childhood in a bad neighborhood with a lot of emotional deprivation, but this is one case where the NFL should say: “Adam Jones, you do not meet the character standards of the League, therefore we cannot let you play for the Cowboys, the Titans, or any other team in the NFL. Good luck to you in your future endeavors, and we hope you will seek psychological and spiritual help for yourself. We wish the best possible personal outcome for you outside of NFL football.”

This the the best blog I have read in a while.

Maybe this is just a reality check. Pacman thinks he is worth a number 1 pick as trade value and it is becoming evident that he is a number 2 ( like the number of fingers kids hold designating what they plan to do in the bathroom). :)

the point is this…if you trade for a guy like adam jones who has been nothing but solid on the field and know that he has issues staying out of trouble off it you don’t get a free pass.
if the cowboys want to have a shot at jones’ contract rights then they’ll have to compensate the titans, otherwise they can wait like everyone else and see if the titans release him.

This is an interested debatable topic, which could go on and on, but putting everything in prospective, we all clearly understand that we are talking about JERRY JONES here, a man with a plan that not many can understand! The shrewd businessman that he is, the TITANS won’t be getting anyone from our roster with the type of potential that you all are referring to: CANTY, AUSTIN, and definitely not CANTY…these young players don’t come easy, and in regards to the offensive players, the RED BARON only had them for a season, that was the opening act…best believe that we will hold on to those recievers, just in case! Then when you talk about the defensive guys, CANTY is that one player we will not let go….CARPENTER maybe, but not CANTY. Remember that game against the VIKINGS when he blocked that punt, which was returned for a touchdown….that is the things he is capable of doing, and knowing that DAVIS is gone, those types of plays are going to be harder to come by, with this young group, not to mention that the recievers mentioned play a role in our special teams. There are a bunch of NO NAMES on our roster, that will be the only players JJ let’s loose, but if they performed last season, they won’t be going anywhere….HURD with that amazing catch against the GIANTS, AUSTIN with that lay out which caused a flag against the PANTHERS, hate to say it, but that is what these guys offer…so TITANS best get those ideas out of their minds, and remember PACMAN isn’t and not quite sure when he will be reinstated.

ONLY OPTIONS: carpenter, salvaii, or maybe thompson….cases where there is no use for our team.

Once again remember who were are talking about, JERRY JONES….smart, brash, and the shrewd businessman gets what he wants.

I think it might be in the titans best intrest to wait until goodell reviews pacman’s case, once we know for sure weather he will play next season or not (IMHO no he wont). if he does get the approval than more teams will be interested, and I am sure jerry jones will make whatever draft pick comes our way conditional on weather Pacman plays or not. I think pacman will be part of a draft day trade to move up or down, say pacman and our first rounder for atlantas last 2 2nd rounders, (tradinc pacman in place of a 3rd or 4th round pick)

I like how the cowboys fans think that they will be doing the titains a favor, by getting “pac-man” out of our hair.PAC is good, real good …..the man is a top five kick/punt returner in the NFL ( when he is playing) , and some might argue a above average cover coner … my point beings we all of know how J.J. is trying to get over on the mephis10, aand get him on the cheap. Jerry is smart like that. I hope we wait out the cowboys till draft day or a better offer comes by wich ever jumps up first .

He will play again. There are guys playing in the NFL that have been accused of murder and guys who have killed people via dui’s. Pacman is certainly no angel, but I believe he will be back sooner rather than later. I hope the Titans can get the most possible for him. I, however, didn’t miss him last year and don’t intend to miss him this year.

  20. jrtitans says:

    March 31st, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Let me share my “character assassination” scenario.

Ok, so we dont get a deal worth taking from the Cowboys or anybody and Pacman somes back. Some of the fans are unhappy but realize that Fisher and the team have little respect for the guy. He takes Rey Hill’s position as 2nd string and does kickoffs and punts.

He screws up on the field , he moves from position KR to DH ( not designated hitter) which is doghouse. Now he de-activated the rest of the season and in effect in is out of the league for 2 years. He gets hurt ( like a hammy from not playing) and goes on IR and again, out of the league for a 2nd season.

At the end of the season, Titans put the franchise tage on him and (in effect)block a trade deal. Then rinse and repeat–same thing happens the following year–meaning could be a non factor for 3 years.
Each week Fisher brings him free admission tickets to Deja Vu or Bobs Gold Club hoping he will make an event that Goodell will pounce on and we dont pay him anymore.

Then he only becomes a cowboy by dressing like one on TNA wrestling.

He does well , acts right–we win the Superbowl and create a dynasty for the next 3 years and everybody kisses and makes up and the Titans win like they are going to anyway–with or without him..

  21. beedee says:

    April 1st, 2008 at 7:53 am

The great thing about this situation is that the titans hold all but the most important string. When and if Goodall reinstates Jones, then the titans can get the most out of him. The titans could hold on to him, and i would. Adam Jones has no more chances from the league. I he screws up again he’s gone. He needs to get paid and the only way to do that is be on the field on Sundays. Yes he has been a distraction, but he instantly upgrades any teams defense and KR teams, which is why i’d prefer to see him stay in nashville and earn his last $21M here.

If that can’t or won’t happen I doubt Bud Adams allowing jones to go to Dallas in a one sided trade that favors the cowboys. Bud still wants to rule the Texas market so my guess is he’ll look elsewhere for a deal if the cowboys are being tight with the compensation.

    and to TCF,
one catch, or tackle doesn’t prove that a player is gonna make it, JJ may not want to give up a future young talent, but if he trades for Pac he’s getting a young proven player that is a game changer. I just don’t see the titans giving him away to anyone, especially a Texas team.

    Drex,

If Pac man is traded to the cowboys what kind of year do you think he will have there?

Titans who leave us tend to have a terrible year.

What is the best you think the Cowboys or anyone else will give for him?

  25. Drexel Perry says:

    Wesley,

If Pacman can stay out of trouble, and that’s a big if, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him have a solid season for them. They have good pass rushers and on the other side of him at corner is Terrance Newman, a Pro Bowler in his own right.

As for Pacman’s value, considering his status as of right now, I have a hard time believing the Titans will get anything more than a mid round selection for him.

It’s unfortunate because from an ability standpoint, he is worth more than that. Unfortunately, his off the field problems overshadow his ability.

  26. Wesley says:

    April 2nd, 2008 at 2:26 pm

    Thanks alot!

Why would we want to keep a player if he does not want to be here. That might be asking for more trouble than he is worth. If he can’t stay out of trouble, I think a trade is in everyone’s best interest.

Hopefully he is reinstated before we give him up. We might be able to get something better for him that way.
