Tennessee all-time team: Free safety

Three players have been the regular free safety for nine of the team’s eleven years in Tennessee, each with multiple years as the primary starter. We’ll consider the following players for the free safety position on our all-time Tennessee team:

Marcus Robertson (1997-2000) — He was the “Ice” in Tennessee’s “Fire and Ice” safety tandem, with Blaine Bishop as the “Fire.” A twelve-year pro, Robertson was once named a first-team All-Pro. His best season in Tennessee was 1997, when he had five interceptions and three fumble recoveries for two scores. Robertson was the quarterback of the defense and is now the assistant secondary coach for the Titans.

Lance Schulters (2002-2003) — A ten-year veteran and one-time Pro Bowler, Schulters spent three years in Tennessee, with his final season cut short by injury. He had six interceptions in 2002, his best season with the Titans. Schulters had some bad luck in Tennessee. Besides the injury, he also contracted Bell’s Palsy one offseason, which temporarily paralyzed half his face, and was also the victim of a carjacking.

Lamont Thompson (2004-2006) — Former GM Floyd Reese once claimed the Titans had Thompson rated as the second-best safety in the 2002 draft, but the Bengals, who drafted him, cut him after just one season. Thompson was not exactly a fan favorite in Tennessee and lost his job a year ago to second-year man Calvin Lowry. His best season was 2004, when had four interceptions, one for a touchdown to beat Miami.

Not included in our poll are Perry Phenix, the starter in 2001, and Calvin Lowry and Michael Griffin, who were the starters last year.

I’ve got to say I like Robertson. He and Bishop made a great pair and are deserving, both individually and collectively, to be on our all-time Tennessee team.

Who do you believe should be the free safety on our all-time Tennessee team?

In our last poll, you selected Blaine Bishop as the strong safety. The defensive team so far:

LDE Jevon Kearse
LDT Kevin Carter
RDT Albert Haynesworth
RDE Kyle Vanden Bosch
LLB David Thornton
MLB Randall Godfrey
RLB Keith Bulluck
LCB Andre Dyson
RCB Samari Rolle
SS Blaine Bishop

I liked Schulters a lot, but it’s hard to pick him over Robertson. So fire and ice it is, until Griffin takes over in a couple of years.

Robertson, like a number of the other choices on defense, is to me more of a Houston Oiler than a Tennessee guy, but he did spent 4 years as starter as the team left the Astrodome. Hopefully Griffin will make this one a hard choice in a couple years, but right now it’s Marcus, ill-timed motorcycle accident notwithstanding.

Have to agree. Another position where I’m hoping someone will make a serious case eventually. Until then, it’s Robertson.
