Haynesworth signs one-year tender
Looks like Albert Haynesworth won’t be missing any time in training camp afterall.
According to media reports, Haynesworth and the Titans are finally on the same page, culminating in Big Al’s decision to put his John Hancock on the one-year $7.25 million franchise tender.
Securing Al’s services for the 2008 season was of paramount importance to the Titans. Of course, a long-term deal for Haynesworth can’t be consummated until after the season ends but for now, Al will remain a Titan for at least another year.
The reports state that the Titans and Al have agreed to an incentives package that if met, would prevent the Titans from putting the franchise tag on Al in 2009.
This is certainly good news for the Titans as their training camp begins today.
Now that Haynesworth is signed, sealed and delivered for 2008, next up for the Titans is reaching an agreement with first round draft pick Chris Johnson.

Excellent. Now lets get CJ signed and get the season on the way. I hope to god they don’t fart around getting him signed. I know they are waiting for the backs taken before him to sign so the can slot him properly, but if those teams aren’t going to get moving, then I say we move ourselves. Even if we over pay a little, it is far worth it to get him in camp and in football shape. Let the other teams worry about not having thier picks in on time.

RB Rashard Mendenhall, drafted #23, just signed with the Steelers.

5 years $12.555 million with $7.125 guaranteed.
Should only be a matter of time before Johnson is signed.

I don’t get the whole slotting thing. If everyone is waiting on everyone else to get signed, how does anyone ever get signed? Is this just a phenomenon for a certain part of the draft class? Or do some teams realize it’s a dumb approach to take and worry more about getting their guys signed?

The first pick is normally a start, and you look at the percentage increase there. After that, sometimes you see a team go ahead of the curve and sign a player. It’s this exercise in mass psychosis, or a big collective action problem if that’s how you prefer to think of things. I don’t think most teams really care about whether or not a pick is signed 10 minutes or 10 weeks before training camp, as I know of no reason it matters.
Hopefully Johnson will make it to camp on time. It’s great to hear Albert will be-I figured he’d come rolling in about August 15 around 350 lbs.

I knew Big Al would get in on time for training camp, as he has expressed his desire to be a Titan the rest of his career. I think also that the incentives package included in the deal are the Titans gaging how much to pay him over his next contract with us. If he can show he can play at the same level he did last year, as soon as the season’s over, you can bet your bottom dollar Albert has his contract and the money he wants, with the Titans. If he has a horrible year, nobody will blame the organization for letting him go.
CJ will be in camp within the next couple of days. The titans like their picks in camp, so it won’t be a very long holdout.

Albert missed Friday’s practice, probably because all contracts have to be approved by the NFLPA and the league office, which can take a little while. He should be on the field for today’s (Saturday) practice.

It’s official: Johnson is signed.

5 years $12 million, about $7 million guaranteed.
Also, here’s the breakdown for the incentives Al has to reach to prevent the Titans from tagging him in 2009:

Al just needs to reach one of the four incentives to become an UFA in 2009:
Make the Pro Bowl.
Play 60 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.
Play 53 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and the Titans win 10 games.
Play 53 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and the Titans finish in the NFL’s top five in total defense.
