Vikings War Cry

KC Humiliates The Vikings- Time For A Change?

Talk about a disastrous game.

Let’s start with Bryant McKinnie.  How many times did he get beat today?  I lost count after the first quarter.

And he’s making how much money?  I defended the guy in the offseason.  I honestly thought he would rebound from a disappointing 2006 season.  But he was embarrassed today…it’s becoming painfully apparent that he’s ridiculously overpaid.

McKinnie, though, isn’t the biggest problem on this offensive line…Chilly’s pass blocking scheme is BRUTAL.  Holcomb had absolutely no time in the pocket.  And last week, T-Jack constantly needed to rush passes to avoid sacks.

Looking at the bigger picture, I’ve completely lost any confidence in Chilly’s offensive coaching.  First, I’ve gotta discuss the clock management.

In both halves, the clock management was nothing short of an embarrassment.  The Vikings had the ball with 1:07 to go in the second quarter, and they let 30 SECONDS run off the clock after a running play.  They had plenty of time to get into field goal range, but they blew it.  I couldn’t believe what I was seeing…it was absolutely incompetent clock management.

Then, in the fourth quarter, the Vikings got the ball back with 1:45 remaining.  No timeouts.  We threw a three-yard pass and a five-yard pass.  To the middle of the field.  You can’t make it up.  Wasted tons of time.  Again, clueless clock management.

The word “aggressive” isn’t in Chilly’s vocabulary.  This conservative, ”dink and dunk” offense is a joke.  How about this: Let’s throw the ball down field, let’s use some play action, let’s do SOMETHING to make this offense less predictable.

Also, the idea of making adjustments at halftime is a completely foreign concept to Childress.  It hasn’t taken defenses long to realize that they need to rush the quarterback to prevent the Vikings offense from putting points on the board.  And yet, Chilly’s never made any adjustments to counteract this pressure.

I haven’t been on the “fire Childress” bandwagon…until now.  I’ve seen more than enough of this garbage offense.  It’s time for a change.  Get Chilly out of Minnesota.  He’s clueless.

You can look at some missed opportunities as the reason for the loss.  Holcomb just barely overthrew a wide-open Ferguson in the endzone, and the refs robbed Shaincoe of a touchdown.  But again, let’s look at the bigger picture.  This team is going nowhere with Childress’ stupid offensive philosophy.

This is a 5-11 team.  Blackouts are on the horizon.  Zygi: It’s becoming increasingly apparent that a coaching change is needed.

I also didn’t want to hop onto the “Fire Childress” bandwagon, but I’m starting to waver. The entire coaching staff seems to be absolutely unable to make any sort of adjustment over the course of a game. Coaching has demonstrated this on BOTH sides of the ball. This is totally unacceptable, and we will continue to lose while it happens.

However, I have to disagree with you about McKinnie. I agree that he is slightly overrated and (as such) slightly overpaid. However, he was getting beat because Holcomb was standing in the pocket for ages without making either a throw or a scramble. I’m disgusted with the performance of our receivers (with the exception of the flashing Sidney Rice). But, I can’t help but be disappointed in our quarterbacks, as well. I desperately want to believe that the T-Jax experiment will work out, but he has demonstrated absolutely nothing to me in his starting opportunities. I realize there is going to be growing pains, but he hasn’t shown ANYTHING. Not a single flash of ability that would make me believe that he will be anything other than average. Holcomb and Bollinger are no better, really. The fact is that our offense (outside of Peterson and Taylor) is still damaged goods. We can’t make anything outside of a running play work because our quarterbacks and receivers belong on a CFL team.

But, on the plus side, there are some bright spots on the team. The defense continues to impress, for the most part. Chris Kluwe is looking fantastic. Peterson is everything that we could have asked for, and more. Shiancoe showed some flashes today, and he would have had a touchdown if we hadn’t been robbed of it by an awful ruling. Sidney Rice is improving and is also flashing his talent. EJ Henderson has developed nicely and continues to make plays when it matters.

Unfortunately, we’re approaching a very difficult portion of our schedule. I can’t rule out the possibility of a win, obviously. But, it’s not very likely. If we can’t come away with wins against teams that we should be beating (like this one), then we are going to struggle again this season. I think that we are setting ourselves up for another top-ten, or maybe even a top-five pick in next year’s draft. We need to make vast improvements at the receiver and quarterback position before we have a chance to succeed. However, a coaching change may not be far off.

Ryan- Good to hear from you again. I can’t disagree with your point about Holcomb…he was pretty indecisive on a number of plays. With that said, though, I saw plenty of instances where McKinnie was flat out beat by his guy on the defensive line. I heard a good point about McKinnie…he never goes to the ground. Once he decides he’s beat, he gives up on the play. Certainly, though, Holcomb and the blocking scheme deserve blame.

Peterson is absolutely the bright spot on this team, and I also am pleased with Shiancoe’s performance. But it’s hard to be positive when these coaching issues exist. This upcoming stretch could get very ugly for the Vikings…here’s a list of our next six opponents

    Green Bay
    Chicago
    Dallas
    Philadephia
    San Diego
    Green Bay

Almost makes you shudder, doesn’t it. Thanks for the thoughts, Ryan.

Yeah, there was a play today where I saw McKinnie just stand up while a play was still running. Thankfully McKinnie will get by simply because of his size, in most cases. I think that the left side of the line sees a great deal of double-teams. As such, perhaps that is a reason they struggle. I guess I just can’t say I’m real impressed with the line, in general. Ryan Cook has been a failure and I really hope he is gone in the near future. Herrera and Hicks are both at or below average. Our line just isn’t nearly as dominant as it should be.

I honestly think that we may end up choosing between a top-tier tackle or quarterback (of which there are plenty) next season. After this years draft, I have a great deal of confidence in our scouting and drafting ability. However, It’s sad that I’m looking forward to next year’s draft. I think that maybe we just forgot that this is a team in rebuilding mode. That being said, performances like this are still not acceptable.

How many in game adjustments can you make with either a rookie QB, or Kelly Holcomb, a rookie runningback, and young receivers.

You guys are going to have growing pains, and if you thought this was a playoff team, you were fooling yourselves, but in a few years the Vikes will be very good.

I forgot to add, the only time Kelly Holcomb has been considered a good QB, is when he was compared to Tim Couch

I see what you’re saying, Bo, but trust me on this one…sure, the Vikings suffer from inexperience on offense, but Chilly’s offensive scheme is absolutely killing us. On another note, I stand corrected on the Shaincoe catch…channel five had an angle which showed that he, in fact, didn’t make the grab.

And Ryan, I think much of the disappointment comes from the way we’re losing. Both this game and the Detroit game were very winnable, but the Vikes couldn’t make plays down the stretch. I mean, beyond the first drive or two of the game, this offense is absolutely stagnant…and that goes back to Chilly’s inability to make in-game adjustments.

I haven’t been a fan of Childress since he came to the Vikings…His “kick ass offense” is weak and predictable.

I’m still to mad about this game to even type…So I’ll leave it at that…

I agree that the Vikings lost this game as much as the Chiefs won it. I’ve been silently bemoaning Herm Edwards’ and Mike Solari’s stubbornness in making halftime changes to the offense, but they finally came through in a big way. Maybe that’s just what Minnesota needs– a sense of desperation, like the Chiefs had, to tweak the overall philosophy.

Childress needs to take all three of his quarterbacks and ride into the sunset. So much talent on this team and still one of the most anemic offenses in the league. I’ve been a Vikings fan for over 40 years now and can not stand to even watch without feeling ill. Prey for a miracle!!
