Vikings War Cry

Vikes/Packers Countdown

Some Quick Hitters as we get closer to gametime:

*I know the Daily Norseman disagrees, but I’m cool with the Vikings stopping the game to make an acknowledgement of Brett Favre breaking the touchdown record. The Vikings and Packers may have a major rivalry, but nonetheless, greatness deserves to be celebrated.

*How cool would it be if Brett broke BOTH the touchdown and interception records on Sunday?

*What’s the over/under on Favre’s passing yardage for this game? 600? Seriously, this game scares me…we’ve seen what can happen when an opposing team focuses exclusively on the passing game (Kitna was able to effortlessly pick apart this defense). Green Bay will be passing all day, so this game could get ugly.

*Chester Taylor will play this Sunday, and it’s about time. Finally, we have a chance to truly see what the two-back system can do.

Keys to the game for the Vikings:

*Adrian Peterson is nicknamed “All Day” for a reason. He’s the only guy on offense who actually seems to move the ball…so use him. From start to finish. In key drives. In game-deciding situations.

*Pressure Favre. The Ted Cotrell era in Minnesota taught us what happens when you refuse to pressure the quarterback: Your defense gets humiliated. Mr. Frazier, if you want any hope of slowing down Favre, you need to put some heat on him.

*Turnovers. Favre will inevitably make mistakes, so the defense must capitalize. I’ve preached the importance of field position…simply put, the Vikings offense doesn’t have a prayer unless the defense can give them favorable field position.

*Adjustments. The Vikings offense typically has success on their opening drive, and is unable to score in their ensuing possessions. That’s no accident…Chilly hasn’t been making the necessary in-game adjustments to make the offense less predictable. Chilly- I’m begging you to add some variety to the playcalling.

*Holcomb must take fewer sacks. The Vikings are in for a long day if Kelly Holcomb doesn’t have enough time in the pocket…the pass protection simply must improve. But Holcomb also needs to do his part…in last week’s game, he took some unnecessary sacks because of his indecisiveness.

Some thoughts going into the half…

Ryan Cook continues to be almost totally useless. The Vikings desperately need to address the right tackle position in the draft or through free agency.

E.J. Henderson continues to impress me. He’s played very well in the middle. Much better than when he first played the position last year.

Chris Kluwe continues to play really well. The difference between this season and last season is like night and day. Maybe that ACL tear really was the cause of his poor performance?

When the Vikings take the short pass plays that are given to them, they can move the ball well. However, it seems like there are portions of the game where the offensive play calling loses its identity and the players look uncomfortable executing it. I don’t really know how to describe it, but perhaps you know what I’m talking about.

I finally see what Childress was talking about last week when he said he put Moore in the game because Peterson couldn’t pick up blitzes that well, yet. Peterson whiffed on a block today when the Packers showed blitz and allowed Holcomb to be hurried. Peterson has been a giant stud, so this is obviously a small gripe. I’m sure he’ll get better at this as the season progresses.

Cedric Griffin has struggled, to a degree. However, he is being targeted on an awful lot of plays. He still is a solid, physical player who is in his second year. While I don’t expect he’ll develop into a shut-down corner, I think that he will continue to improve.

The Vikings biggest problem is the inability or unwillingness of Childress to adjust the gameplan to his personal. I do not know how this man ever became a football coach. Why take out Adrian Peterson when the team needs him the most? His decision making making capability in almost every aspect of the game is inept at best and totally negligent at worst. If this man is still the head coach next year I will not be watching any more Viking games until he is gone. I know that there are people that will say that it is not being a loyal fan to give up on them. To them I say loyalty goes two ways, the fans are the ones that make these owners, coaches and players wealthy, we are owed a quality showing for our hard earned money. I have been a Viking fan since 1961 and will continue to be but I can not stand the heartbreak and embarrassment of watching them under the leadership of this modern day Les Steckle.
