Getting set for Philly
Steve LaCroix, the team’s vice president of sales and marketing, said Wednesday the 2,000 tickets that remained as of Monday for the Vikings-Eagles matchup have been sold, meaning the game will air on local Fox-affiliate KMSP (Ch. 9). Meanwhile, 3,500 tickets remain for the Vikings-San Diego game on Nov. 4 at the Metrodome.
I’m a bit surprised that the Vikes were able to unload the 2,000 tickets in three days…but I guess that’s just another 2,000 potential boo birds in the seats. I doubt that the fans at this week’s game will have much patience with their squad.
Regardless of the outcome this week, I’m expecting the Chargers game to sell out. WCCO might need to open up the checkbook to avoid a blackout for that game if the Vikings lose this week, but still, I’m sure we’ll be seeing the Purple on TV for the near future.
Looks like Holcomb’s the starter for the Philly game:
Speaking Wednesday, Jackson acknowledged the possibility that he could miss more than one game and also said his strained groin, which he injured Sept. 16, “is not where I want it to be. Sunday would be the third start Jackson has missed this season. Never before, Jackson said, had injuries forced him from so much as one game in his football career.
I think it’s for the best that Tarvaris sits out. While I definitely don’t think it’s time to shut him down for the season, we need to take his health and confidence issues seriously. With increasing concerns that Jackson is injury-prone, it’s critical for the Vikings to keep Jackson sidelined until he’s truly healthy…and as I mentioned earlier this week, spending this Sunday in street clothes could help T-Jack recover from the psychological blows of the Dallas game.
Jackson’s college history certainly doesn’t suggest that he’s particularly injury prone, but it’s a bit alarming that he’s already been injured on two occasions this year- and also consider that his previous injury isn’t fully healed. There’s no need to rush him back, and I’m not just saying that because I’d rather see Holcomb starting. I’m just worried about the kid’s health.
The sack issue is my major concern with Holcomb as the starter. It seemed like Holcomb was sacked on every-other play against Kansas City, and that simply can’t happen again. He just can’t be indecisive this time around…it took him WAAAAY too long, on many plays in that game, to decide where to go with the ball.
Kluwe’s gonna be sticking around:
The Vikings signed P Chris Kluwe to a six-year contract extension today, locking him up through the 2013 season. The deal includes $1.7 million in guaranteed money and is worth a total of $8.3 million, putting Kluwe among the 10 highest-paid punters in the NFL.
Kluwe deserved an extension- he has the fourth-highest amount of punts in the NFL, and he leads the league in punts inside the 20. Unfortunately, though, at this rate, Kluwe will probably blow out his kicking leg by the second or third year of that deal.
But really, he’s been fantastic this year. He’s kicking for a good average, and he’s greatly improved his directional punting. Chris is earning every penny of his contract.

You make the point that you’d rather see Holcomb start, but I have to disagree. Anyone who had themselves fooled into thinking that we were a contender this season was not considering the facts. We have a rookie quarterback who is performing like a rookie quarterback. (By that I mean, statistically bad.) We have a very sorry corp of wide receivers. (Most of whom would be lucky to earn a starting spot on another team.) Simply put, our offense is in major transition. We had an EXTREMELY outside chance in this division, let alone outside of it.
It’s foolish to put Holcomb in (except in instances where Jackson is too injured to play) because it will not change the fact that Jackson needs game experience if we’re going to go with him as our quarterback of the future. He has around seven starts to his name, and I still think it’s far too early to judge if the experiment has been a failure or a success.
The sad fact is that we’re still a year or two away from being a threat in this division. Short of one of Jacksons arms falling off, I don’t see us going with a QB in the draft. I strongly suspect that the Jackson experiment will continue into next season. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Solid points, Ryan, but I’m just concerned about his health and confidence. When I said that I wanted Holcomb to start, I meant that I’d like to see him start for the next week or two.
As I said, it’s kinda concerning that Jackson’s been injured twice this year, and considering that his original injury is apparently still bothering him, I think it’d be wise to sit him for the next 1-2 games. And then there are the confidence issues…that Dallas game would’ve damaged the confidence of any young quarterback.
So in short, Ryan, I agree with you…Jackson needs to keep starting. I just want to make sure he’s physically and psychologically ready to go, before we put him back in.
