It’s Official: Vikings Ink Frerotte
This new “Quick Post” feature is pretty cool, isn’t it? I’ll be using it to provide shorter takes on a fairly regular basis, while keeping a distinct formatting difference between my shorter and longer articles. Anyways, the Vikes agreed to terms with Gus Frerotte today…here’s John Clayton’s take on the signing:
Acquiring Frerotte will end any trade discussions with the Texans over backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels. The Vikings offered a third-round choice for Rosenfels. The Texans wanted a second-rounder. Even though the Texans recently signed Quinn Gray for the minimum salary, the team plans to keep three veteran quarterbacks on the roster.
So there you have it. I know a lot of people are annoyed that Frerotte’s apparently the best the Vikings could do in their search for a new backup quarterback, but I have a slightly different perspective about it — to me, this signing indicates that the Vikes will likely be serious pursuers of a quarterback in the middle rounds of the draft.
Still, I do find it disturbing that this team has made very little effort to upgrade the backup quarterback position this offseason. I view Frerotte as an upgrade over Bollinger and Holcomb — but only a tiny upgrade. If Tarvaris goes down with an injury or has significant struggles next season, it’s gonna be a long year for the Purple…while I think Frerotte could be a decent backup in limited doses, the thought of him receiving extended playing time is enough to make Vikings fans nauseous.

I still think TJack is and will be a very good QB as he continues to develop, but what I worry about is that major injury that takes him out for most of the season or something stupid like slipping on a McDonalds bag and slicing his arm half off.
I do hope that the great seasons Culpepper and Bolger had with Gus talking in their ear continues here. If Frerotte provides that other voice that suddenly makes everything easy, understandable, or is a calming and focusing aid, I’ll be happy.

I agree, TJack is going to be a good QB when he gets developed. Frerotte, in my opinion, was an ok decision. At least a better option than Bollinger and Holcomb. I would have liked it more if the vikes could of chose their backup QB a little more agressivly but hey at least they improved the defense a little this year.

I too think TJack has potential, and I do like Gus. However, no QB will do well as long as they are under Chili.

Exactly, Luft…while I certainly wouldn’t call Jackson “injury prone,” he did display last season that a substantial injury in the upcoming season is certainly not out of the question. If that does occur, we’re in trouble…I don’t want to see Frerotte receive a ton of playing time this season. However, It’s a good point that Frerotte does provide the calming veteran influence that Bollinger and Holcomb failed to provide.
