Vikings War Cry

Packers File Tampering Charges Against Vikings

OK, maybe Pro Football Talk had a point about Brett Favre’s communication with Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. From Jay Glazer of Fox Sports:

In the latest twist, the Packers have filed tampering charges with the league office against the Minnesota Vikings for alleged communication with Favre, still technically a member of Green Bay, FOXSports.com has learned. The league, according to a source, is currently in information-gathering mode, speaking to members of both teams.

The Vikings were informed late last week that the allegation is that Favre has had inappropriate dialogue with Minnesota offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a close Favre friend and former assistant coach with the Packers. Favre has sought his release from Green Bay and several rumors have swirled that Minnesota is his targeted landing place, largely due to his relationship with Bevell.

Well, if Teddy Thompson and Company can actually prove this occurred, more power to them. But outside of spying on the conversations, how the heck can they show that these discussions did, in fact, break NFL rules?

The only instance that comes to mind of a team being punished for tampering happened back in March with Lance Briggs and the San Fransisco 49ers. San Fransisco contacted Briggs’ agent during the 2007 season (in other words, while Briggs was still under contract with the Chicago Bears), and Goodell ruled that the dialogue between the two sides was impermissible under league rules. As a result, the 49ers were stripped of their fifth-round draft pick, and they swapped third-round picks with the Bears.

But that case was the exception to the rule — it is extremely rare for teams to successfully accuse other organizations of tampering. I cannot think of another single example of a team facing punishment for that violation.

As such, this complaint by the Packers is a total reach, and I’d be flat-out stunned if the Vikes ever face any punishment for this supposed tampering. Indeed, I think our friends in Lambeau have a lot more to worry about than a few phone conversations between Bevell and Favre.

Sounds like you are a Viking Fan. Where do you come off knowing what the Packers have about the Vikes tampering?

Hey, Jose, you really think that he’s a Vikings fan? I mean, he’s only writing for a Vikings blog.

This whole thing is total silliness. In the end i don’t expect that anything will happen, but I don’t understand how the Packers can get so up in arms about a player that they’re not going to release, anyway.

Dude, I have no idea whether or not they have any substantial evidence. But historically speaking, it’s extremely rare for teams to face any punishment for tampering because it’s pretty darn impossible to prove that any inappropriate conversations actually took place.

Ahhhh, yes. The alcohol is flowing freely in Wisconsin once again. Typical Slacker propaganda.

Green Bay’s front office is getting dumber by the day aren’t they? They just seem to be pouring gas on an already out of control wildfire.

Smoke screen, that is all it is. I read that the basis are that the contact between the 2 “increased” when all this BS started. If that is a fact and the complaint is about “increase contact”, then again, what a joke.
GB wants the spotlight somewhere else, and by the way:
Brett: we do not want your little sissy girl, egomaniac, me 1st 2nd & 3rd attitude. You can kiss our purple behind…

Not too worried about this BS. Just the FudgePackers front office doing some finger pointing. I actually enjoy that we have the packers shaking in July. I think a retired player can talk to whom ever he wants to, about whatever he wants. It would be different if he were an active player. This whole Favre thing is the ultimate middle finger east, I LOVE IT. Can’t wait to beat up on whoever their QB is, or whomever our is.

PAINT: Still can’t come up with anything but that lame, infantile gay slur, huh? We are not shaking, we’re just gonna do whatever we can to keep y’all down. Didn’t we beat you twice and get to play three weeks longer than you did?
And for the last time, a retired player who is still under contract CANNOT talk to whomever he wants–those are league rules! You wanna change them ’cause you’d rather not go than lose your fifth Superbowl? Or ’cause you haven’t even seen your team lose a Superbowl in your lifetime?

    Oh, no, he DI’-ent!!!
