Season Preview 2009 Minnesota Vikings

Anthony Chergosky from DailyNorseman.com gives us a look at the 2009 Minnesota Vikings. When you think of the 2009 Minnesota Vikings, two words probably enter your mind: Brett Favre. But when taking a look at the team, its chances of repeating as NFC North champs, and its opportunity to go further in the playoffs than it did last season, Favre is just the tip of the iceberg. All over the field and on both sides of the ball, the Vikings are a team built for success this season. This team's bread and butter is still its ability to run the...

Couch Crew Exclusive: My Exclusive Interview with Pierre Garcon

Yeah, you read it. It's another interview. Heck, I love interviews, don't I. After an interview with Scottie Cordier, the cornerback for Cal Poly, and then another one with Jerel Myers, a wide receiver for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League, this has to be one of the bests I think. This is my interview with Indianapolis Colts wide receiver, Pierre Garcon. I contacted Pierre in about April or May and I was wondering if he would ever respond back. I thought he never would. I contacted him at his website, PierreGarocnLive.com. Then, on June 21, I went to the Email app of my cell phone and saw a name saying "Pierre Garcon." I was like, "Could this be it? Is this actually Pierre Garcon?" If he was, I thought he said he couldn't do it because he was extremely busy. But I guess he wasn't, he...

Colts Talk: Is Pierre Garcon The Answer for Indiana at the Slot?

After reading from a popular blog called The Colts Corner, I read an article about the Colts questions and answers. One question asked by Bryan Brackney, the owner of the site, was who will be the surprise player for Indianapolis coming into the 2009-10 season? Well, Bryan answered that the person who will be the surprise player is in the title above: Pierre Garcon. As Bryan observed, Garcon has been doing well at training camp and the Colts look to put him at punt/kick returner as well as the slot receiver. That brought me to something; is Pierre Garcon the answer for the Colts at the slot position? This is what the Indianapolis Colts are apparently talking about. Well, as of right now, I received an email on June 21. And I just couldn't believe who it was: Pierre Garcon. I asked Pierre a couple of months ago if...

Manning-To-Marshall: Possible Chance Of Colts Pursuing Brandon Marshall?

After watching NFL Total Access and SportsCenter, and reading a few articles on Broncos' wide receiver Brandon Marshall requesting a trade, many people have said that he will go to the Ravens, Bears, or even the Buccaneers. Some said that he won't be traded at all! But you know what? He will be traded. If they can trade a wimpy Jay Cutler, how can they not trade a strong guy in Marshall? See what mess you have made now, Josh McDaniels? But I am glad you are making this happen. Soon, all of you Eagles fans will be happy with Brian Dawkins and Correll Buckhalter returning, or not. And then Knowshon Moreno will be the only player left on the roster. Nah, just fooling with you. I don't want to disrespect the Broncos because one of my favorite writers, Sayre Bedinger, is a Broncos fan and he is cool....

Broncos Should Re-Build

In just his third year in the league, Jay Cutler threw for 4,526 yards and 25 touchdowns. While he also threw for 18 interceptions, Cutler's aggressive mentality at the quarterback position is what makes him such a good player. Nearly the definition of a franchise quarterback, Cutler's gritty, competitive attitude has brought him up the the elite status as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. So when the Denver Broncos decided to give in to Cutler's trade demand this offseason, and ship him away to the Chicago Bears for two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and Kyle Orton, it really made you wonder what they were thinking and what their new plan was for the future. While Cutler owned a 17-20 record as a starter, you have to remember that he's only entering his fourth year in the league. Stars don't grow overnight. It takes time to develop into...

Minnesota Vikings: Don't Get Brett Favre, Tarvaris Jackson Is The Answer

Brett Favre is surely going to be the on the Minnesota Vikings roster, now that he is gotten surgery on his throwing shoulder and a Vikings assistant will be coming to Favre to do some workouts with him to help his shoulder. So, you get it: Favre will obviously be on the Vikings roster, no doubt. I don't know what's next for Favre after he leaves Minnesota, because he will after one year and go on to these teams. So here's my question to all of you fans for the NFL team in the purple uniform: why would you want a losing-his-luster quarterback like Brett Favre for one year, when you can get an improving quarterback like Tarvaris Jackson for many years to come? Why Brad Childress, why? Have you seen what Favre has done with the Jets. When the Jets were at an 8-3 record last year, they...

Does Anyone Remember....?| Terrence Wilkins

After not writing a Does Anyone Remember....?| for quite a while, I have come back to continue to the series. Here it is: Does anyone remember Terrence Wilkins? I do--and surely well, as always. As always, I tell you why I picked Terrence Wilkins for this edition of Does Anyone Remember...?|. Well, I haven't written a real Colts' article for a while and I was thinking of some great guy on the Colts who was a huge asset towards the team. And there he was, Terrence Wilkins: one of the most underrated punt/kick returners in NFL history. And here's his story: It all started in Virginia. Wilkins was a star at not just a wide receiver, but also a returner. After a pretty successful career in College, Terrence went on to find a path towards the NFL to have a new future. But he didn't. Well, not at the...

NFL Top 10: Best Storylines heading into 2009

I really love spending hours putting together the research for a long-winded heavy analytical post, but sometimes, a fan needs to appreciate the game from a different perspective.  This isn't going to provide any insight into why teams will win and lose this year, but because it's June, and we're two months from training camp, I'll forgive myself.Today, NFL Top 10 takes a look at the best storylines entering 2009, as well as those potential developing storylines that could shape the upcoming NFL season.10. Ray Lewis, Rex Ryan, and defense in the AFCIf the Baltimore Ravens are going to make good on my super bowl appearance prediction, they can't allow the media to even speculate that they might be missing Rex Ryan.  The effect of defensive coordinator on a team's defense has certainly been overstated throughout the years, so we'll never know if the Ravens are actually missing Rex Ryan. ...Read more

NFL Great Debates: What to Do with Michael Vick?

NFL Outsider's Greg Trippiedi and Anthony Brown debate the issue: Which team is the best spot for Michael Vick if he overcomes the enormous hurdles necessary to get on the field this year?Greg Trippiedi says Vick shouldn't be a starting quarterback:It's pretty clear that Michael Vick is not going to have a job waiting for him when he gets back. He's 29 years old -- too old and too young in different ways. Vick's open field running abilities were already in decline when we last saw him, and that was in 2006. But that doesn't mean he won't stick somewhere. He's still got a good five or six seasons ahead of him as an effective athlete. The question though remains: Where will Michael Vick fit in, and who will take a chance on him? I don't think Vick is a good fit on a team with a clear need...Read more

NFL Power Rankings: Looking at the 10 Teams with the Brightest 2009 Prospectus

The coming and passing of the NFL Draft allows prognosticators such as myself to lock in our predictions for the coming season.  There will be no more phases of the NFL off-season that can result in wide-spread player movement.  To the critics who will point out, "there's no way you can call the season in May," I say: there's no point to trying to call it in August either.  I'm just beating you to the punch. In this exercise, I'm going to pick 5 teams from each conference to fill out my top ten teams in the power rankings.  Essentially, I'm not trying to pick the ten best teams in the NFL right now as much as I'm trying to pick the ten teams most likely to win the Super Bowl.  By spreading out the picks evenly by conference, I maximize the chances that two of my preseason picks play in...Read more

Derrick Williams, Jarron Gilbert, Jared Cook Lead Round 3 Recap

Process points become negligible after the first day, so lets look at round three and the players that each team got in the middle of the draft.65. New York Jets -- Shonn Green, RB, IowaThe Jets traded up for this pick, so the Green pick was really disappointing.  I didn't think he was anywhere near the best available, and with this being the first pick of the day, I expected a great pick here.66. St. Louis Rams -- Bradley Fletcher, CB, Iowa67. Kansas City Chiefs -- Alex Magee, DE, PurdueThe Chiefs pick their second 3-4 DE of the draft.  So what does this mean for Glenn Dorsey?  Will he split time with Magee and Tyson Jackson, or is he already on his way out?68. Chicago Bears -- Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose StateChicago moves forward looking for best player available, while making sure to add a defensive lineman every year. ...Read more

Alphonzo Smith Trade, Rey Maualuga, Pat White Highlight NFL Draft's Second Round

The second round of the 2009 NFL draft was fronted by some high profile trades.  Both the Panthers and the Broncos traded first round picks in 2010 for players they had first round grades on, but drafted in the second round.  Pat White ended up getting drafted by the consummate "Wildcat" offense, which seems like a good fit, if not a reach.  Inside linebackers Rey Maualuga and James Laurinaitis slipped through the first round, but got drafted by teams in the second with defensive issues.  They'll step in right away and help those situations. However, it was some lesser known prospects who will be the story of the second round in a few years.33. Detroit Lions -- Louis Delmas, S, Western MichiganDelmas is a local product who was clearly head and shoulders above all the other safeties in this draft.  After going with the QB with a steep developmental curve in...Read more

Green Bay Trades Up For Matthews, Colts Nab Donald Brown

Pick 26, Green Bay Packers -- Clay Matthews, LB, USCI really like the Packers' decision to make this trade.  They go up, get a player who has slid down further than was expected, and use him as you transition to the 3-4 as an outside linebacker.  I think this is one of the more imaginative moves of the drafts to this point, and Green Bay is doing quite the job in their defensive transition.Green Bay Packers: 11 pointsPick 27, Indianapolis Colts -- Donald Brown, RB, ConnecticutFollowing the lead of successful teams who have employed two running backs, the Colts have paired Donald Brown with Joseph Addai.  Addai's contract runs through 2010, but Donald Brown will be asked to help improve an offense that ranked 31st in rushing last season.  The Colts probably could have grabbed a running back later for the same effect, but they must have really prefered Brown...Read more

NFL Outsider Mock Drafts: Trippiedi's Final Call

As promised, this will be my best attempt at figuring out how the NFL draft will go on Saturday.  I'll try to project all logical trades in this space, but certainly won't be able to chart all the action that will happen.  Put simply, I'll be satisfied if I nail team intentions correctly in the draft. It seems like the media is catching up to teams in terms of figuring out smokescreens.  That should help me a lot in this process.  We'll check back on Sunday to see how accurately this two round mock really was (don't get your hopes up).Round 11.  Detroit Lions -- Matthew Stafford, QB, GeorgiaJim Schwartz thinks he can win with Matthew Stafford.  And if Jim Schwartz thinks he can win with Matthew Stafford, then I agree with him.  I'm still not convinced that he's worth the money though.  Stafford is a deadly accurate passer who might...Read more

NFL Outsider Mock Draft: Jerry Goes to Colts

With the 27th pick in NFL Outsider's 2009 Mock Draft, Colts blog 18 to 88 selects Peria Jerry (DT, Mississippi). There is a big problem with mock drafts run by fans. The fans aren't that smart. In three previous mock drafts, I've picked Peria Jerry and Knowshon Moreno. Now, in the MVN mock draft, it appears to me that BOTH are available at 27. There is next to no chance that either of these top 15 players will last past pick 20, let alone all the way to 27. If they are, Polian should immediately draft Jerry and trade next year's first rounder for Moreno. In real life, these players will go well before the Colts draft. Bill Polian has an unblemished record of hitting on first round picks in Indianapolis. Every player he has taken has become a starter, if not an outright star. At the same time, many...Read more
