The War is Won in the Trenches

There is much to be excited about this year with the New York Jets. There is a new head coach, key new additions via free agency and a top five pick quarterback from this year's draft. The thing that may be a bit under the radar to the casual eye, is that the offensive line is returning intact. This unit has a full year together under thier belt and that is both rare and vital to success in the running game and pass protection.

Football teams take on identities similar to that of the head coach. From Lombardi to Parcells, Walsh to Manigini. Teams play with the same energy level on the field as the coach's persona and demeanor. I mentioned Mangini because when you look at the overall body of work his teams produced here, they were as middle of the road and non-emotional as he was. Aside from the around 500 record overall in his stint, you can just look at the way the team performed on the West Coast and also down the stretch last year. The whole time he was making bland statements about approach and execution, the team played just as flat as his press conferences. Can you imagine what we would have heard from Ryan in the midst of such a collapse. I can guarantee that the team would react differently, if they were to end up in such a scenario, which is highly unlikely.

I mention all of this because this year, the team will rely heavily on the running game. If you doubt that for any reason, look at the drafting of Shonn Greene for proof. When you look at the culture that Ryan is creating in the locker room, you can't help but think that this year, the offensive line will step up to be one of if not the best in the league. They are experienced, highly talented, extremely well coached and more familiar with each other's tendecies. When coupled with the aggressive mentality that Ryan brings, I see the potential for a nasty unit that can dominate.

Damien Woody, Alan Faneca, Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Brandon Moore are all pretty darn big. When you factor in that the league as a whole is getting 3-4 happy, resulting in one less big tackle on the opposing defensive lines, I can easily see a season that produces two 1000 yard runners. These guys are not only big, but extremely athletic as well. You start talking about Mangold or Faneca downfield on a linebacker and it creates serious problems for the opposing defenses.

This is becoming somewhat of a hot topic with football minds around the country right now. There is actually a great in depth article by KC Jones earlier this month comparing the Jets and the Giants offensive lines in a highly statistical manner right here http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/15/who-has-the-best-o-line-giants-or-jets/ This shows that I am not alone in my thinking about the potential for this year. Many analysts around the league are actually expecting big things from this unit.

Even with the emphasis on the run, the pass protection will also be a huge factor in this team's success. No matter which QB we go with, neither is a proven Dan Marino back there. Teams will be bringing the heat in passing downs. The "blind-spot" protection for the QB will be a determining factor in games. Teams will not only bring the heat, but likely be ball hungry and swipping a lot when putting the pressure on. I expect to see a huge step up in D'Brckashaw's game this year as from the comments I have heard from him thusfar, he seems to have something to prove.

There is no debating the fact that with all of the high-powered offense, if the QB has no time, the throw can't be made. The game was and still is, won in the trenches.

TRUST ME...Don't sleep on Chansi Stuckey!

So everybody wants one of the wideout divas in the league. Burress, Edwards, Jones and Marshall are the common names thrown around, some have even thrown Harrison out there. While I like the thought of adding a proven big threat reciever, I want to get one who doesn't shoot himself, drop the ball, do coke or hit women. So those guys are all up a river with a boat with no paddle. I suppose for the right price, I wouldn't mind Edwards or Harrison if you held a gun to my...nevermind.

Anyhow, I really like the things I am hearing and seeing from Chanci Stuckey. Here is a guy who always seemed to make plays last year. While Favre got the credit, he made a riduclous catch in week 1 to help fry the fish in Miami. The guy got separation time and time again last year in the slot. This year he seems hell bent on getting the job opposite Jerricho Cotchery. I know a lot of folks are really grumbling about the lack of "proven" talent and depth at wideout, but wasn't Cotchery himself unproven a couple of years back. When you really think of it, who was the last receiver who really came straight out of college highly touted and really made an immediate impact and name for himself?

Stuckey started his college career as a quarterback so it really helped with his picking up pre-snap reads and blitzes last year and so far this year in workouts. He is learning from Henry Ellard, the new Jet's receiver coach. I also hear he is going to work out with Terance Mathis for some extra credit homework assignments before training camp starts. This kid is like a sponge and he is finding the best water possible.

Now I recall Mathis when he was with the Jets. I saw promise there but he wasn't utilized properly in the system (sounds familiar?) as a receiver. He left as an unrestricted free agent and went on to AVERAGE three times his best yearly total up here (28 catches) down there per year (77 catches). His first year there, he caught 111 balls for over 1300 yards! This guy constantly made toast out of DB's and was always one of the top options for the QB's Jeff George and Chris Chandler down there. He actually finished his career as THE leading receiver in three categories in Atlanta Falcons history with 573 receptions, 7349 yards and 57 touchdowns from 1994-2001.

Let's look at the big picture here. Stuckey is going to work with the Falcons' ALL TIME leading receiver, outside of training camp on his own time and dime. Then he will come back to camp and have one of the best route runners in the history of the game, who's third all time in yardage, Henry Ellard working with him all year as his coach.

Now, maybe I am missing something, but the last time I checked we are talking about trying to "upgrade" over a guy who seriously studies his craft and already has a year in this system. The options are a guy who was late for his own court case for shooting HIMSELF in his leg (butterfingers), a guy who has hands of stone when it matters (lardfingers), a guy who got caught with more blow than the 86 Mets (blowfingers), a guy who hits his women (weak pimp hand) and all with pretty high price tags in cash and/or future draft picks, as well as quite possibly team PR and even more importantly chemistry.

You heard it here first. Don't sleep on Stuckey. I can see big things popping for him.

Always Overlooked...

There is much talk about the many additions and changes with the team this year. Whether it's new head coach Rex Ryan, the free agent additions of Bart Scott, Lito Sheppard, Jim Leonhard, Larry Izzo, Donald Strickland, Howard Green, or draft picks Mark Sanchez, Shonn Greene or Matt Slauson. One player who seems to often go practically unnoticed or unmentioned is Marques Douglas.

As of an undrafted free agent entering into his tenth year in the league, Douglas is used to being overlooked. After being signed with Baltimore out of Howard in 1999, he has had stints with New Orleans, San Fransico, Tampa, and then returning to the Ravens last year via trade. Mostly used as a reserve, early on, he had a solid year in 2003 starting all 16 games and recording 61 tackles and 4.5 sacks. This is actually a better year statistically than Kenyon Coleman's best year in his career thus far, which was his first with the Jets in 2007 (55 tackles, 1.5 sacks), who he replaces.

He was signed here in New York by Rex Ryan to, for the first time in his career, not be overlooked by his coaching staff and simply shuttled in to keep the starters fresh, but rather to lead the other players. What a lot of people don't realize is that aside from being a key DL player familiar with the system being implemented, he also was a big factor in the trade that got the team Mark Sanchez. Rex Ryan said in a quote earlier this year, "Signing him in the off-season kind of went under the radar, but it allowed us to make a trade to move [DE Kenyon] Coleman, a good football player. Would we have been able to make the trade if we never had the depth at defensive end, at safety? But we felt great about the depth we added, and we know Marques can play. This is the kind of player I want to surround myself with and bring in, guys who are passionate, love to play the game, prepare to play, and when the lights come on these guys really play great and elevate other players' games as well. Douglas is that kind of guy." I tend to see that as firstly, a glowing compliment of the work ethic, on field performance history and skill of Douglas. To a much lesser degree, a subtle knock of Coleman and S Abram Elam (naturally, as they were Mangini players who were let go and replaced with his players).

I feel that while many in the media and casual fans are overlooking him, this will be one of the players who plays a vital role in the Jets succes this year. While two years older than Coleman, he is a nasty, hardhat type, high motor player that will bring a more veteran presence on an established line. We all know that football is won in the trenches. No matter who is throwing the rock and who is catching it, this team will be led by the defensive play first and the offensive line setting up the running game second. To have a player on every level of the defense that is already familiar with the system is a smart move by Ryan and Mike Pettine. To have a smart player like this at the DL, is even bigger when factored in with how smart the other players they brought in are as well.

Key Sophmore Jet players to watch this year pt.4-David Clowney

The final player I wish to cover in this four part article is David Clowney. While Dustin Keller made an instant impact last year. Clowney turned heads in pre-season and then was injured for most of the year. This sophmore player has the potential to be the biggest unproven "X-factor" on the team this year.

The reality of the situation is that the Jets have no proven number two at wideout. Some may argue that the number one is really a number two at best. Many people are still looking to an addition from outside the team like Anquan Boldin or Plaxico Burress. Let's just assume that they are not brought in. As of this writing, Chanci Stuckey is ranked at the number two position due to his relative greater amount of experience. I would prefer if he was the slot receiver and Clowney the number two for one main reason. He is a pure down the field deep speed threat, that would take attention away from Cotchery underneath. He showed great speed last year versus Cleveland in pre-season, but this was against second and third team players. He will need to demonstrate greater skills against better players this pre-season.

The team has nine receivers working out with them now and with his experience in the system, you would think he is one to stick around. In his limited past playing time, Clowney has demonstrated an ability to run the routes, get open deep and most importantly make the catch. While he lacks some size in terms of weight for a true number one wideout, at 6'0 188lbs, he is as big as most NFL DBs. This makes him the ideal number two receiver over Stuckey in my opinion. His slight edge in size and speed would give him a better chance at separation when opposing DBs play press coverage. His health and also his hands are the two main concerns at this time.

With either QB who winds up starting, we need a guy who can demonstrate consistently the ability to get separation and that makes the catch and holds onto the rock. Clowney showed those abilities throughout his college career at VT. He needs to step up at the pro level and show that same ability. From what I have been following through the OTA's he is showing signs of improvement.

This is all of course assuming the Jets are fine with the current talent as they were with Chad and Kellen last year or Kellen and Brett Ratliff this year. The bottom line is that Clowney still needs to step up. With unproven QBs he can help inject the Jet offense with that afterburner effect we haven't had since Keyshawn or even further back, All Toon and Wesley Walker.

PB and J?

With the news that Plaxico Burress' trial has been postponed to September, there is great speculation that he may get a chance to play in the NFL this year. There is a need for the Jets to improve the talent and depth at the wideout position. I will examine what this latest development means in this article.

There are two main factors that will affect the outcome of whether or not we see the big receiver don the green and white this year. The first obstacle is Roger Goodell. While Burress was suspended last year for five games, that was a team suspension issued by the Giants. The NFL still has a right to issue a suspension for violating the league's good conduct policy. I fear this more than the legal issues at this point as it truly looks as if he will not be in court until 2010 at this rate. Once the courts in New York start giving you postponements, it can go on for two years easily. I fully expect another postponement in September if there is no deal worked out between both sides by then.

The second factor is what other teams remain interested in Burress as this all plays out. The two main teams are the Bears and Bucs. I feel that if either team stays interested and thus, drives the price tag up, the Jets will likely back off. This is a tricky scenario as Burress is in legal trouble in New York. While the team plays and practices in New Jersey (what a sham), Mayor Bloomberg would throw a fit should Burress get a big money deal here and be allowed to play before getting his trial. While this stinks of collusion, it is what it is. I suspect that Goodell will do as he always has done and wait until Burress is tried before giving his verdict on any suspension.

An even bigger concern for me at this point, is that Burress was 28 minutes late to the hearing yesterday. This is not a sign of remorse or an effort to change by a player who had this same problem with being tardy to practice with the Steelers and Giants. I would surmise that if somehow you did excuse him for the practice issues with a case of A.I. (practice? we talking about practice!!!), then for a major court case which could directly affect the rest of your life, you would think he would want to be parked in his vehicle waiting for the court to open.

If it was even just to put on the front of a good appearance. You don't want to mess around with a situation like that and Burress, whether he realizes it or not, showed a complete disrespect for the system in the fact that he was late yesterday. That in itself could scare teams off as well as cause a greater repercussion from the commissioner. In light of what happened with Donte Stallworth, you want to tread lightly with Goodell right now.

The funny thing is, if you look at the other options who may be available in Braylon "brick hands" Edwards and Brandon "I never did an Ike Turner" Marshall, Burress is actually the best proven talent between all three. There is no question that the others may have more upside, but for an immediate impact, Burress is clearly the man. I think he would be more likely to watch himself than not. There are too many high character players on the Jets and they are all seeming to welcome him with open arms.

Tim Hasselbeck even came out this week with a borderline slanderous statement ripping Burress. He basically flat out told teams to stay away from him, but seriously, look at this source. A career clipboard holding QB? We are all familiar with his wife's opinionated rants on "The View", so I suspect it is merely just him trying to seem like he wears the pants in that marriage (which we all know is not so).

I feel that unless Mike Tannenbaum didn't satisfy his gambling itch last year with Brett Favre, the team will not attempt to sign Burress right now in light of this latest news. There is still too much uncertainty in the air regarding the legal and league aspects of it all for the team to go out and sign him anytime soon.

While they very well could sign him this week and deal with the issues as they come up, it would be tough to justify making that move and then potentially losing him for say four games this year at a possible critical juncture. This is especially when you factor in all of the good publicity the team has been getting since drafting Mark Sanchez as well as working out any potential chemistry and timing with Kellen Clemens or Sanchez.

There is a lot of talk around town that the team's interest has cooled on signing him. The same was said last year about Favre until late one Saturday night, the news broke that he was acquired. There is talk that Chanci Stuckey has been catching anything thrown near him in workouts so far this year and running solid routes.

I don't mean this as a disrespect to he core of wideouts in camp right now, but we may be closer to getting a ham and egg surprise, than PB and J this year. Again, this is all dependent on Mr. T's gambling tendencies. After last pre-season, all that I can say is...

Has anybody been to Vegas with Mr.T lately?

Minnesota Vikings: Don't Get Brett Favre, Tarvaris Jackson Is The Answer

Brett
Favre is surely going to be the on the Minnesota Vikings roster, now
that he is gotten surgery on his throwing shoulder and a Vikings
assistant will be coming to Favre to do some workouts with him to help
his shoulder.
So, you get it: Favre will obviously be on the Vikings roster, no doubt.

I don't know what's next for Favre after he leaves Minnesota, because he will after one year and go on to these teams.

So
here's my question to all of you fans for the NFL team in the purple
uniform: why would you want a losing-his-luster quarterback like Brett
Favre for one year, when you can get an improving quarterback like
Tarvaris Jackson for many years to come?

Why Brad Childress, why?

Have
you seen what Favre has done with the Jets. When the Jets were at an
8-3 record last year, they went 1-4 after that. In that span of five
games in which Favre didn't play well, you could see him just throwing
the ball up in the air.

It turned out he didn't look like having
fun, not one single bit. He was just playing with negative attitude.
And you know the saying in sports that you have to bring "ten percent
effort and ninety percent attitude?"

Well, Favre was zero percent in both of those categories, to be honest.

There's
no point of having Brett Favre. Sure, he will be pretty good but he
might be ruining his legacy if he comes to Minnesota. He's already a
Hall-of-Famer, what's the point of keep playing.

I know, Joe Gibbs did that when he was a coach, but that's coaching man! That's coaching!

Brett
Favre might as well play for all 32 NFL teams. But there is some good
bringing Favre to Minnesota. A good writer on this site (one of my
favorites), James Williamson, has said something that was very
interesting if Favre came to Minnesota.

Williamson observed that Favre will be the first ever quarterback in NFL history to beat all 32 NFL teams!

Pretty sweet, huh?

But seriously, that's not the point!

Now you'll see Sage Rosenfels swapping faces. If you don't get what I am saying, please take a look.

But also, what's the point having Rosenfels, too?

You all remember his helicopter hurdle
against the Indianapolis Colts last year that cost Houston the win (And
Schaub's smiling face. His face when Rosenfels fumbled is priceless!).

And
Rosenfels second battle against the Colts when he costs Houston a win
(again) when he was looking for a receiver and then just decided to
throw right at Colts' safety, Melvin Bullit.

Rosenfels will create a problem in Minnesota, I guarantee it (don't go Joe Namath now!). But here is what the Vikings should do:

USE TARVARIS JACKSON!!!!

That's
right. Use T-Jax. Tarvaris will be the man for Minnesota, he will.
Well, that's what I think. Sure, he wasn't successful in his first two
years, having a total of eleven touchdowns and 16 touchdowns.

But
in his third year, after being on the bench, learning from a veteran in
Gus Frerotte who became the starter. But then, Frerotte got injured and
then here came Jackson who everyone doubted.

In one game in
which I believe was against the Arizona Cardinals, Jackson had a
spectacular game by throwing for four touchdowns while having 163 yards
and an amazing 135.5 quarterback rating.

He also had a great game before that, throwing for 105 yards with one touchdown for a 143.8 quarterback rating.

Solid, huh?

In
his last four games of the 2008 season, Jackson's lowest quarterback
rating was 88.5 in that four-game span. Here's what his total was
during those four games:

740 passing yards, eight touchdowns and one interception for a 116.5 quarterback rating.

Now those are very good stats. You can't disagree there. And all of that happen after being benched from learning from Frerotte.

Jackson had 1,056 passing yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions for a 95.4 quarterback rating.

Jackson is a solid quarterback.

But
he needed to be benched so he could learn better and not take so much
criticism. With the 2008 season closing, the Vikes looked like they
couldn't make the playoffs with Frerotte out and T-Jax in.

They did, though.

Sure,
Jackson didn't win his first playoff game but not everyone does when
they go for the first time. The only person I know has done that is
probably Tom Brady, no one else. Peyton Manning didn't get it.

Not
everyone gets their first playoff win. People expect too much out of
Tarvaris Jackson. You have to give him time, this kid has a future. And
with the pick of Percy Harvin, the Jackson can have more helpful guys to throw to.

And
Jackson is ready now. I observed something. Here's what happened in the
first three games Jackson played in, before being benched from the
veteran of Gus Frerotte:

316 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception for a 77.4 quarterback rating.

Now
if you scroll up, you'll see a major difference between when he started
his first three games without learning from a veteran quarterback and
the stats after he was benched by a veteran quarterback.

Big ass difference.

Jackson is ready and could be a star from years to come. No Rosenfels or Favre.

Tarvaris Jackson is here to stay.

So
Vikings fans, what would you have: An old quarterback who will only
stay with the team for one year and will only come to the Vikings to
bring revenge on his old team or bring in a quarterback who is
detirmened and will be a great quarterback for years to come?

You decide, and the time is...now!

Key Sophmore Jet players to watch this year pt.3-Dustin Keller

This week, continuing my in depth look at second year players to watch, I would like to focus on a player with huge potential for greatness in the league, Dustin Keller. He drew comparisons to Tony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark in the NFL combines, as having the potential to be an elite Tight End. As a rookie last year, Keller showed signs of being an unstoppable force on offense.

The production from Keller will be a huge factor in the teams' success. This year there is no clear cut, proven number two receiver with the team. Some would argue that Cotchery is not really a number one and is more suited as that number two. If you look at the way this team is built on offense, then all signs point to Keller being a focal point to the passing attack this year. There is nothing that keeps opposing teams honest more than having a solid weapon at tight end to stretch the middle of the field. With the strong running game and lack of an truly experienced QB, teams will likely bring eight into the box often against the Jets. With Keller at tight end, this can be a recipe for their disaster. His combination of size and speed make for a mismatch with any linebacker or safety in the league trying to cover him.

If you followed him in college, then you saw him dominate Ball State and routinely make defenders look like small children trying to tackle him anytime he touched the ball. Last year, in week 10 versus St. Louis, he finished with six grabs for 107 yds and a touchdown. Now granted, this was in one of Brett Favre's greatest games as a professional, it still shows what can happen when you make him a focal point of the passing attack. Over a four game stretch through week 13, he averaged 6 catches per game at around 10 yards per catch. He did average 11 yards per catch for the season.

He finished with 48 catches for 535 yards raking 12th among tight ends in the league. In most player rankings, he ranks between 10-12. Looking at the numbers closely, he actually had a better year than other well known TE's such as Jeremy Shockey, Alge Crumpler, Todd Heap and Kellen Winslow. There were key situations last year, like the 3rd and 15 catch in overtime in New England for a crucial first down. That showed Keller can make big plays when you need him to. He made the catch and then spun and lunged for the first down dragging a defender with him. Aside from his three big overtime catches, there was also a huge defensive holding call in the fourth quarter of that game. This lead to a Thomas Jones TD and further shows that he is a beast that you can not easily cover in the red zone.

There was no consistency with the identity of the Jet offense last year and that is why he only finished with 3 touchdowns for the year. As illustrated above, he has great overall football smarts and natural instincts in terms of where he is on the field. This year, I suspect that he will be the primary red zone target and finish with somewhere between 70-90 catches and 10 touchdowns. At 11 yards per catch, the guy is a first down waiting to happen when you throw the ball his way. The numbers don't lie, he's just that darn good.

Will This Year's New York Jets End Up Like the 2007's Cleveland Browns?

A lot of people probably haven't noticed this but I have.

Don't you remember the 2007 Cleveland Browns? Well, let's start from
the beginning. The Browns drafted a hot shot quarterback in Brady
Quinn. The Browns expected him to be a huge star towards the squad, now
that their other two quarterbacks didn't meet their goals with the
franchise (Charlie Frye and Tim Couch).

After a successful career in college, Quinn was drafted 22nd overall
by the Browns and they looked to have a future with him. It didn't look
a quarterback battle would be decided but Romeo Crennel insisted on it
because he thought Derek Anderson had something in him.

He was coming off an okay year but they decided to use Anderson and Quinn in a battle for the starting job.

Derek Anderson won of course and the city of Cleveland also knew
that Quinn was the second-stringer due to the fact that he may learn
something from D.A. With Anderson at starter, fans were questionable
about the 2007 Cleveland Browns' season.

But the fans were impressed with Anderson's abilities as he built a
team around superstars like Jamal Lewis, Lawrence Vickers, Braylon
Edwards, Kellen Winslow, and Joe Jurevicius.

The Browns went on towards a 10-6 record and the city of Cleveland
smelled a playoff berth for the first time since 2002 when they went
9-7.

The Browns didn't make the playoffs, because of the Tennessee Titans
17-14 win over the Indianapolis Colts to guarantee Tennessee a playoff
berth. If the Colts had won that game, the Browns would have their
first playoff berth since 2002.

The Browns didn't get it. But now here we are looking at the same
exact thing with the New York Jets. I can literally see this happen.
Let's check out the comparisons with this.

Well, Kellen Clemens was coming off a pretty bad season as he had
zero touchdowns and one interception for 26 yards including a 34.2
quarterback rating. He did play some games in the 2007 season, however,
and did pretty good filling in for Chad Pennington in some games.

Let's compare that with Derek Anderson before he started the 2007
season. Anderson was coming off a pretty bad season and did start some
games. He had five touchdowns and eight interceptions for 793 yards
with a 63.1 quarterback rating.

The comparison is a pretty similar, don't you think? And people are
still questioning Kellen Clemens this year by saying he could start or
not. That is exactly what happened with Derek Anderson in 2007.

See that?

Now let's check out the first round draft pick. Well for the Jets,
they picked up Mark Sanchez as their fifth overall pick and they expect
Sanchez to be the starting quarterback this year and be the future of
the franchise.

Now let's compare that to the 2007 Cleveland Browns.

Well, the Cleveland Browns drafted Brady Quinn 22nd overall in the
2007 NFL Draft, looking to have a future franchise quarterback for the
years to come. They looked at him as the next best quarterback since
Trent Dilfer to lead their franchise to some wins.

So you see where I am getting here.

Now let's check out their weapons, starting with the running backs. Let's see what the Jets have this year, for running backs.

The Jets already have two decent backs to use: Thomas Jones and Leon
Washington. The Jets also picked up a star from Iowa, Shonn Greene, to
be a helpful back with Thomas Jones to make a one-two punch while
Washington is looking for a new contract and probably might just be a
return specialist for the team.

They also have a respectable running back in Danny Woodhead who is
considered as a "speedy" back and looks to become a punt returner
towards the squad.

Now let's compare that to the Cleveland Browns.

Well, after struggling to find backs after looking at Lee Suggs and
many other players, they have finally found a running back in Jamal
Lewis, picked up from the Ravens and was a player part of the 2,000
rushing yards club.

Then there was Jerome Harrison and Jason Wright to help out Lewis (now that he was aging) and they did a solid job at it.

It's very similar, yes, I know.

Let's get to the other weapons of the offense, like wide receivers.

The New York Jets have five guys to throw to help them out on
offense. One you can name right off the bat: Jerricho Cotchery. He has
been great last year

and looks to become the leader of the receivers.

Then you got Brad Smith and Chansi Stuckey who are improving and
look to become stars on the offense in the future. And then the two
tight ends that'll help out greatly: Bubba Franks and Dustin Keller.

Now let's compare that to the 2007 Cleveland Browns.

The Browns also have five good guys to throw to. Two you can name
right off the bat: Braylon Edwards and Joe Jurevicius. Then you got Tim
Carter who looks to help the offense greatly and here comes Josh
Cribbs, who was a standout at quarterback in college but wanted to be a
receiver in the NFL. He is also a dangerous returner.

Then you got the son of the Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow: Kellen
Winslow II. He is a great tight end but has been experiencing injuries.

Look how close these comparables are!

Now let's see the quarterback battle.

The Jets have a battle between Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens.
Sanchez got a pretty big deal, biggest in NY's franchise history, so he
looks to become a starter anyways. Not really. Sure, he performed well
in the OTA's but my blog reported that the coaches say that if they were to start a quarterback right now, it would be Kellen Clemens.

And why wouldn't they?

They have to because Clemens has learned from the best: Brett Favre
and Chad Pennington. They have improved his game greatly and I don't
think he'll give it up. Give Sanchez a year off so he can learn from a

experience.

Now let's compare it to Cleveland.

The Browns had, obviously, a battle between Derek Anderson and Brady
Quinn (and with Ken Dorsey, no, just kidding). Many fans believed in
Quinn but Anderson was named the starter. And why wouldn't he?

He spent his first two years doing nothing but learn from Dilfer and
Frye and he probably got a little better at least. He was named the
starter and didn't let anyone down.

Comparable, right? I think so.

So now you get what I am seeing. I don't want to go any further
because both of these defenses are pretty similar (they also both have
a 3-4 defense as well).

I expect the Jets to go 11-5 this season with a new coach in Rex
Ryan who'll improve the defense greatly with a new additions like Bart
Scott (duh). I think Kellen Clemens will be named the starter and he
will not let people down.

Hopefully, he might not end up like Derek Anderson, who is still in
competition with Quinn again this year and now has lost his faith with
the team.

Kellen Clemens might have about 2,000 to 3,000 passing yards and
about 15-25 touchdowns and about ten-to-20 interceptions this year.

It's going to be an exciting year for the Jets this year, and hey,
they may end up like the 2007 Browns with so many close comparisons.

Hopefully, they'll make the playoffs.

And with what I wrote, I may actually be right.

Plax watch begins...

Today is a huge day for the New York Jets. It is the day they find out what will happen regarding the legal issues surrounding Plaxico Burress. If he can avoid a jail sentence, I fully expect to see him in Green and White.

Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan have tried to downplay any interest, but it is painstakingly obvious that this is the player the team needs to push the offense over the top. With Laverneus Coles gone, the team needs another veteran to keep defenses honest. Regardless of who is the starting QB this year, a proven big threat receiver is a security blanket for ANY NFL QB, let alone a rookie or one with half a season's experience starting.

I am a huge supporter of the current core of wideouts, but there is no denying the way that this guy changes the game. He forces defenses into double coverage. With his height and wingspan, he catches anything thrown within a ten foot area of him. He has proven to be a force on offense that will free up your tight end and running back to make more plays. There may be a surprise superstar in the making in guys like Brad Smith, Wallace Wright, Marcus Henry, Chanci Stuckey or David Clowney, but it is more likely to take another year for those guys to blossom and reach full potential. This team is built to win now and Plax will give them the best chance to win now.

Many players have said that they would welcome him with open arms and I think he would even help the younger receivers develop faster with his experience. There has been talk about Anquaan Boldin, Braylon Edwards and even Brandon Marshall, but I am not confident if either of the first two can handle the NY media spotlight. I would love Marshall as he is another force and seems to have the most upside as a player, but he is an "alleged" abuser of women. Even if it's not true, to have such allegations alone speaks volumes about the character of a man. I really didn't see anything solid in his addressing the allegations to give me any faith in him being a stand up team player. He seems like more problems are lurking around the next corner, the one after that and the one after that.

We already know Plax can handle the spotlight here, the question is whether or not he would cause more injury to himself in some other moronic fashion. He just needs to leave the guns in Miami where they are registered and focus more on playing football and not the clubs. I suspect that with guys like Bart Scott, Thomas Jones, Jerrico Cotchery, Kerry Rhodes, Kris Jenkins and even the rookie Mark Sanchez as teammates and also being fortunate enough to get a second chance that he would learn from his mistake and move forward in a different direction. Scott would talk too much trash and embarass him daily in practice for shooting himself in the leg in the first place, Jones would keep him working out, Cotchery would inspire him to be more humble, Jenkins would threaten to bear hug him if he did anything to jeopordize a run for the title, finally, Rhodes and Sanchez would be too busy getting him into modelling to be out clubbin like he's Tupac and Suge Knight. I can picture him pulling the NEW Marcus Henry and working out all day and then going home to be with the family.

There is great talent on the team and I like the attitude of the core of receivers. The thing is, this is a team built to win it all now. They have some key cornerstone players to build a franchise around. But certain key skill players have a small window of time to get it done. There was a chemistry that the team had that was disrupted last year. Players have already gone out to say they would welcome Plax so I don't see him having a negative effect here no matter how much mainstream media tries to imply that. If they could go out and dump cerebral Chad last year for Favre, they need to go get Plax tomorrow as soon as the verdict comes out that he will get off easy (which I suspect will happen). You don't keep giving someone delays in the trial to throw the book at them here in NYC.

Rex Ryan makes you want to go full speed!

When I saw the press conference for his introduction, I wanted to strap on some pads and run face first into a brick wall. There is a litany of quotes every time he opens his mouth. He is indeed his father's son. After this past week's comments about Belicheck and the hilarious exchanges with Channing Crowder ("first off, Channing Crowder has a rebuttal"), we are all familiar with the man at this point.

Let's look closer at the reality of the what he brings to the team.

Passion - Rex Ryan is the polar opposite of Eric Mangini in every possible way. In the past, you got the sense that the team was walking around on eggshells after Coach Herm left four years ago. It's kind of ironic that the same walking soundbyte that was Herm has returned after four years of the Mangini-bots. Many view it as a distraction or fuel for the opposing teams. I find it a refreshing throwback to the days of tough football players and coaches who actually gave a damn. You have not heard a coach this passionate since Herm in this town and this is a town that is all about passion. While I respect the team, you can look at the last few Mets managers as perfect examples. You wonder why the Mets have faded in the last two years, look no further than the head of the horse. There has not been a passionate manager with that team since Bobby Valentine. I don't think it's a coincidence that the last time they were in the World Series was with him in 2000. Having a passionate head coach is key to success. The bravado and confidence that he displays is already starting to trickle down to each and every player. I only hope that it trickles into Brian Schottenheimer's play calling as well.

Intensity - There is no mistaking the intensity level is up in Jets camp. For the first time in many years, you have a coach who has gone on record as saying that every player on the roster will be actively involved in every game. This gets every player to think to himself, "If I do my job and play well, I may get more playing time." This creates not only the competition amongst all players, but it also creates competition within each player. There is a sense that each player is not only pushing each other, but they are pushing themselves.

Offensive Defense - When you look at the Raven's defense, you see a ball hawking, gang tacking group who swarm to the ball on each play. This energy created a mentality of "we can score on any play" with the team and it's defensive players. If you followed the games, there were times when the offense may falter and the defense would pick them right up with a key defensive stop, turnover or even touchdown. Having a defense with this kind of play making ability and mentality picks up the offense. It's a matter of personal pride and competition amongst teamates. You will not stand for getting outperformed by the other side of the ball for too long if you are a serious professional football player with any pride.

Enjoyment - Say what you want about his cracks and candor, this is a game and it is meant to be fun after all. Watching his demeanor in practice and in press conferences, you can see someone who truly loves what he is doing and those are usually the people who succeed. With this energy at the top, it will spill over into every facet of the team. I can see that the players who were there under Mangini are relaxing and becoming human again. There is more confidence when you are relaxed and enjoying yourself on the football field. The main flaw with that old system is that its main emphasis was on the system and not the players. There is a great emphasis on the system now, but ultimately it's about the players and the people on the staff.

This is a man with great football knowledge and personality to boot. I am extremely glad that he was the choice to lead us into a new stadium as the head coach. You can tell from watching the players practice, that they are as well. This season will be action packed and exciting for all Jets fans. The team will be pretty darn good too. When you have a coach who makes you want to go full hard, you don't go home.

Key Sophmore Jet players to watch this season pt.2-Vernon Gholston

Since this year's coach Rex Ryan is a defensive guru with an attacking style, I chose to focus on defense this week in my sophmore player review. It's only right that after a review of Dwight Lowery with the initial story, we now focus on Vernon Gholston.

Some may argue that Gholston should have been the first story. Taken as the number six pick in the first round, he was a much higher pick and thus received more attention overall last year. In Eric Mangini's system (former DB coach), Lowery got more playing time and had a bigger impact last year. Many argued that Gholston was a bust after one year with relatively little playing time. This year, Ryan and Mike Pettine have called out Gholston stating if they can't make him a player, then no one can. Looking at the feedback from Pettine who so far has said that "the signs are there" regarding Gholston's focus and progression from OTA workouts, you tend to think he will answer the challenge this year.

Ryan and his staff will put the players in situations to succeed. I really don't see them asking Gholston to drop back and cover passes a whole lot this year. For additional depth with coverages, keep an eye on undrafted Jamaal Westerman out of Rutgers making the team. They are the same size and he seems more at ease dropping back in pass coverage than Gholston. Vernon Gholston has the speed skills to play either way, but his game is all about the rush and attacking the QB. He is a classic speedy defensive end in the Julius Peppers/John Abraham mold. I think Jake Long still has nightmares about him and we play Long and the Miami Dolphins twice a year. I like the thought of Gholston, Jenkins and Ellis rushing a QB with our core of LB's behind them. If you line up in a 4-3 or 4-6 with the extra tackle, it will only help create more opportunities for sacks as now teams can't double team any of the three with a Sione Piouha, Howard Green or Marques Douglas (another ex-Raven) also on the line.

Last year, Gholston missed the early organized team activities and training camp due to a contract holdout. This hurt his development more than people realize. In Mangini's system, he was being forced into a read and react style of play. As a head coach with a highly touted first year player in a new system, this was just asking for problems. This was never his strength in Ohio State, as he was an end who lined up to cause QB pressures, sacks and hurries. The good thing about Rex Ryan aside from him talking more smack than a WWE promo, is that he is a throwback football coach. He's not all caught up in "well our philosophy is to a read and react" and trying to reinvent the wheel with his players. He recognizes his players strengths and works to implement a system that will utilize them. There are fundamental things about football that don't change no matter what year it is. In the trenches, you line up and try to knock the crap out of your opponent.

Gholston and Lowery are two sophmore players who should benefit from the change in attitude and philosophy with this staff. I feel that the natural skill sets of each will be utilized with the new system and additions to the roster. With more experience Gholston will evolve into a more complete DE/LB. For now, the best bet is to line him up and let him loose. If they can get a minimum of five sacks out of him in situational playing time, it would be a good start to a promising career.

Jets and Mark Sanchez agree to deal

LATE BREAKING NEWS - In what has become a rare event these days in the NFL, the Jets and first round pick Mark Sanchez have reached an agreement on a deal. Terms were not fully disclosed, but it is rumored to be a five year deal around $50M.

I like that Sanchez has gotten this out of the way early. He spoke with reporters briefly after practice today and stressed the importance of getting this done so that he could focus on learning the system and competing for the starting QB position. Some of his exact words were, "I am glad to get this out of the way early and now there is nothing to focus on but football. I have seen with other players how this can adversly affect a career."

This is rare talk for a rookie and further testament to the caliber of a person he is. Whenever he gets the reigns of the team, he is already showing strong leadership characteristics.

Key Sophmore Jet players to watch this season pt.1-Dwight Lowery

With the new defense in place and the emphasis on attacking the ball, one of the most important players in the coming year is Dwight Lowery. Many are overlooking him to focus on the QB competition or addition of other veteran players. He can play a pivotal role in the teams success this year and I will address this second year player today.

He showed flashes of being a great NFL player last year. He has good instincts, is a solid tackler (finished sixth in team tackles), showed great closing speed and can hit hard. He had five forced fumbles last year which is a great indication of his play making ability. He does not give up on a play. After a hot start, he tailed off in the later part of the season. You saw other teams begin to focus on him later in the year and he also got into the old coaches' dog house. As a first year corner taken in the fourth round, this was to be expected with the difference of speed from college to the pros. This year he has a new coach, a new approach and a new number. He says that the only thing he wants to bring in from last year is the experience.

Listening to his comments regarding his first year and the attitude he is bringing into this year, you can sense a big year from him. With the additions of veterans such as Jim Leonhard, Lito Sheppard, Ahmad Carroll and Donald Strickland, you can expect Lowery to learn and improve daily. He will likely be used in nickle CB and dime S situations. This is a situation where the depth of corners would actually help Lowery. It should allow him to freedom to ball hawk and attack more, rather than be used solely in man coverage which is a strength of Carroll's and a preference of Ryan's. This will play to his natural strengths and put him into a position to excel rather than be exposed against opposing teams number one or two receivers.

The experience of that one year is big for him as he was given a significant amount of playing time in key situations last year. The addition of Bart Scott to the LB core and Jim Leonhard to the DBs will also help him greatly. With the new system in place, having veteran players experienced with it to help with the translation is vital. It will take pressure off of the younger players and the entire defense which is already stronger with these additions this year. While Sheppard and Revis are the clear choice for your starters, should Lowery play well in pre-season, expect him to move up the depth chart and get more playing time.

Thomas Jones trade rumors...

I for one am from the school of thought that an established 1000 yard back, who doesn't fumble is an untouchable. It just is so crucial to have veteran hands controlling the rock, especially for a team that is based in the north east region of the country. We play a game each in Buffalo and New England in addition to our eight at home.

All off season long, there has been talk of TJ gettng shipped out. Especially after the team drafted Shonn "One Man Gang" Greene in the third round of this year's draft. My question to you is, for whom would this be an acceptable move?

There was talk for Jay Cutler before he was shipped to Chicago, then also talk for Anquan Boldin and Braylon Edwards. Is there any reason why you feel he should be traded? I tend to think that it is a way to avoid giving him the contract renegotiation he is looking for.

With the teams in our division, a new makeover yet again with the passing game and the schedule as it is this year, I tend to think that not only do you want an established person heading up the running game, you also want someone who is familiar with the blocking scheme and tendencies of the personnel. The only other player on the roster who is familiar is Leon Washington. I prefer to have a bigger back with experience to compliment him. Perhaps Mike Tannenbaum and the staff truly feel Shonn Greene can get the job done as they signed another RB Craig Kobel today.
