Flyers’ Death Wish - Downie Called Up
A day after the NHL repremanded the Flyers organization for their fifth player suspended this season, forward Steve Downie was called up from the Phantoms. Ironically, last week, GM Paul Holmgren stated that Downie wasn’t ready for the promotion.
The troubled Downie is fresh off of his 20-game suspension for a preseason cross-check to Ottawa’s Dean McAmmond. The 2005 first round pick has had his issues of anger on the ice. A fight with a teammate forced a trade to another junior league team - now he’ll be wearing the Orange&Black. Day one of this experiment will take place in Minnesota on Wednesday night.
Bringing up Downie is like that joke right after a tragedy - too soon. I just think the Flyers are asking for trouble but at least it will make good drama.
Here is some of Downie’s greatest hits (no pun intended).
