Paul Maurice Fired

The Toronto Maple Leafs, a team without a General Manger and now they can add the Coach to available positions.

Today, the Maple Leafs brass fired Coach Paul Maurice who was unable to bring the success he had with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2002 and the success he had experienced with the Leafs minor club the Toronto Marlies.

In my opinion Maurice was never given a fair crack at helping the Leafs, he was given a roster with little to no talent. The John Ferguson Jr. firing should have been a sign that the roster wasn’t up to par. Now JFJ can share the blame with Maurice. Whatever happened to holding the players responsible?

With two open positions I can only imagine that whoever they bring in for the job will pull double duty, something the Leafs have used in the not so distant past with Pat Quinn. The problem is few GM-Coaches are successful, look at the Florida Panthers who just relieved Jacques Martin as coach but are keeping him as GM.

The Leafs have already taken a long time to find a GM, Vancouver fired Dave Nonis and in a few short days had already found a replacement. What will the Leafs do to find a new guy? Hold a job fair? I hear they already have job listings on Monster.ca.

All this couldn’t come at a worse time. Sundin is unsure of his future with the Leafs. He claims he wants to wait until he sees what the Leafs do in the off-season and who will be in charge of the team, perhaps this was a move used to appease Sundin? Also, the Leafs are in the Fabian Brunnstorm sweepstakes. It’s said they have the winning edge but just like the Canucks lost the inside track when they fired Nonis how can we expect the 23 year old Brunnstorm to come to a team that is obviously in disarray in the front office.
