Ryan Hollweg—Come Again?
I trusted Cliff when he acquired Jamal Mayers, because the move brought the team some much-needed grit and leadership—especially if Mats Sundin were to leave.
I trusted Cliff throughout the buy-out period, as well as with the release of Kyle Wellwood, as he seemed to have the mindset of what kind of players (and what age-range for that matter) he needed to build the team around.
I trusted him when he signed Jeff Finger. I didn’t trust the dollar amount, but I trusted the player that he thought he was getting.
Ryan Hollweg? Really?
Unless we need someone to dance on a podium in between periods, I’m not sure I see the necessity.
Even then, if we needed a dancer, maybe Fletcher should have gone after Jeremy Roenick.
So despite losing a fifth round draft pick, what exactly do the Leafs get in return?
Well, they get a guy who has twelve points in 200 NHL games (and no that isn’t a typo—Ryan Hollweg has played in 200 NHL games).
They get a guy who can take unnecessary penalties at unnecessary times, and someone who can kill a rally (or lose you a playoff series) with one simple hit-from-behind.
They get a guy who drew the ire of Rangers fans all season in 2007/08, and can’t believe that someone was actually duped into trading for him.
Essentially the Leafs traded for the shorter, less versatile, more hot-headed, higher-producing version of Wade Belak.
They could have thrown an offer sheet at a guy like Daniel Carcillo. They could have just kept Kris Newbury or Ben Ondrus on the roster. They could have signed Georges St. Pierre or Patrick Cote—granted they’re MMA guys but they’re also Canadian, meaning they can probably skate.
We appreciate your attempts to make the team tougher Cliff, we really do—but there have to be better options than Ryan Hollweg out there to increase team toughness, don’t there?
Maybe not. Or maybe he can go out there and score a few game-winning goals (stranger things have happened haven’t they?!) and help us forget all about this.
But I guess there needs to be someone to protect John Tavares, right?

This comment is for the boy Bryan Theil who wrote the article on July 15, 2008 in regards to Why the Toronto Maple Leafs got Ryan Hollweg! It is because HE IS A GOOD PLAYER!! Have you ever though of that. You may sit there and say that he is negative this and negative that buty you know something he is not afraid to step up to a fight to defend himself or his team! Hockey has that reputation for fights so why is it that when he gets into them that it is such a big deal don’t you think that it is time that people get off his back and focus on the game at hand! There are other players that have been caught up in worse things and have been in a lot of fights as well but you all don’t make a big deaal about that! I think that Ryan will be a great asset to this team or any team that he plays for because this is a sport fpr players who are good passionate and aggressive. If there were no challenges or were no fights a lot of people wouldn’t watch! It’s the action that fans like to see not players that are the bestest friends and have a tea party on the ice every game!
