“The Avery Rule” ???
“I’ve played for 15 years in this league. I’ve been watching games for 33 years. I had never seen that in my life” — Devils Goalie, Martin Brodeur responding to Sean Avery’s antics while screening the netminder during game 3 of the playoff series.
Brodeur continued… “I don’t think that kind of behavior should be done in front of the net, but there is no rule for it.” Well Marty, face it- you’re a whiner and in this case you got what you asked for.
Just one day after game 3, the league has implicated a new rule which would result in a penalty for Sean Avery like actions.
From now on, facing the goalie and waving your stick will be considered a 2 minute penalty for Unsportsmanlike conduct… Still no rule has been made about Goalies (Brodeur) shoving Players in front of the net (Avery) during a screen.
Ever since he came to the Rangers, Sean Avery hasn’t exactly been on good terms with Brodeur, but this should take the cake if you ask me. When Avery did it, myself along with the announcers though it was an absolutely brilliant idea, Rangers radio man Dave Maloney could barely stop laughing, he had never seen anything so clever… But once again the league tries to spoil Aves’ good times.
Never before have I seen a rule change made during a playoff series, if anything change it at the end of the year- one last tidbit of sorts comes courtesy of John Madden, no.. not the Football John Madden, the Devils John Madden who said, of Avery’s actions ” “I just find it childish and I don’t agree with any of it.”… Well John, all I have to say is keep your mouth shut– if someone like Zubrus or Langenbrunner had the smarts to do that in front of Henrik Lundqvist you wouldn’t be complaining at all, would you?
For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, here is what Avery did during the 2nd period of Game 3…

i thought they did, but what are you gonna do… i guess lamiorello and colin campbell will stop at nothing to help the devils at avery’s expense…
what avery did may have been a little out of the ordinary— it was within the rules of the game..thats what makes avery so good, he pisses everyone off… WITHIN THE RULES…
im sure he’ll find another way to bother brodeur, and i’m sure that the devs brass will complain about it no matter what…
still no news about the goalie getting a penalty for cheapshotting avery though… very interesting

i’m sorry,…………i still think someone need to go out beat the crap out of players like elias, madden, and see what the have to say then. lamarillo was ok when he had mc kay on the bench doing that or they picked up darren langdon.

the devils are all whiners… all of the broadcasts I heard were loving what he was doing… since they knew there was no rule against it… the guy on Versus from the video link I provided said… “Call it tactics, Call it antics, Call it affective”… that’s what avery is all about– someone definitely needs to step up and hit madden or elias or anyone in the mouth… yes another reason to consider orr in the lineup on wednesday.

Ah, another homer remark from this way-biased blog. You’re supposed to be reporting, not cheerleading.
Both you and jay have no respect for the game and it’s integrity.
And the goalie protecting their crease is part of the game. Waving a stick at someone’s face is not. I guess if I walked up in front of you and started waving my hands and making gestures in your face, you’d allow it and say it’s within the rules of life. No, you get the punk out of your face and area.
And the ’shut your mouth’ comment was real cute. Lundqvist is the biggest pussy. His pads are way over the limit. (How come there’s no highlight reel on here for that?) You know you’d be crying all day long if Zubrus or Langenbrunner did the same thing.
Even YOU’RE own player, Chris Drury, told Avery to put his stick down. There’s one Ranger with class.

First off, Brian… I’m supposed to be blogging, hence… my blog– i voice my opinion.
that said… a) don’t even know how or why you would even bring Lundqvist into this conversation— if his pads were “way over the limit” I’m sure that lamiorello would have complained to the league about that also…
i would not have criticized someone on the Devils for doing the same thing… you know why— there was nothing that said they couldnt… it was strategy— it also wouldn’t have mattered if someone on the devils did it, because Lundqvist wouldn’t have let up a soft goal on the next possesion regardless.
and “blondie”– “hes all mouth” “a wack player”… then how come he has more points (4) then anyone on the Devils so far in the playoffs?…
It’s probably a safe assumption that you had no clue who Avery before he came to the Rangers and you don’t like him because he isn’t afraid to stand up to your big baby of a goalie.

no respect for the game brian ??? the league has turned what once a great game into something to appease the masses.
what avery did was work with in the rules to piss broduer off. he wasnt in the crease, made no contact. slashing is and has been a penalty for years. the devils never had a problem “clearing” the crease when the has stevens on defense or danyeko.
when the devils put mc kay in the crease on the power play nobody whined that he was too big.
some fans the devils have, its the only arena in the league to go for a playoff and 50% of the fans route for the road team.
integrity ? see how well “old time hockey” sits if madden and elias get in to the fray, then we can talk respecting the game.

Its ok because the better team is up. how can u call someone out if they didn’t cheat and the rangers didn’t score while avery was doing that. Understand marty is not the same goalie as he used to be. Just because he did something no one else ever did and is not against the rules stop whining and man up. go Rangers
