The Cold Shoulder

Are you ready to get your San Jose Sharks tickets?

Get your gear ready, Sharks season is getting closer

So are you?  Regular season begins on Thursday October 9, at 7:30pm at the Tank.  The Sharks will be facing their nemesis, the Anaheim Ducks, to begin a season chocked full of question marks.  For the first time in five years, the Sharks will be starting the season with a different coach and much anticipation as to how well they’ll fare this season.

The schedule has been released and the first time they meet the team that ended their season for 2007-2008 will be Saturday November 8th at home.  The final week of October is probably their toughest of the season as they’ll be facing both the Detroit Red Wings (Oct. 30th) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (Oct. 28th).  Thankfully, both games will also be at home.

February is the toughest month for the Sharks.  Only four of the thirteen matches are at home with their longest road trips also planned.  After starting off the month at home against Carolina, they go on the road for five games against opponents Columbus, Boston, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and New Jersey.  After coming home for a three game stand they leave again for four more contests on the road against Dallas, Detroit, Ottawa, and Montreal.

All except for January are pretty evenly scheduled between home and away.  In January, they play at home seven times compared to being on the road four.  Most of the other months have a difference of one between number of home and away games.

It may not matter if last season is any indication of how the Sharks fare on the road, but they may want to take advantage of a strong start this season if possible.  Last season the Sharks were number one in the NHL for road victories with a 27-10-4 record.  Their home record was basically average compared to the rest of the league at 22-13-6.

First seed or eighth seed won’t matter to Sharks fans.  The die-hard want to see this team make it to the cup and really don’t care about the record as long as it gets the Sharks into the second season, the one that counts.  If the Sharks make that second season count, then that will mean that they’ll be bringing the Stanley Cup home to San Jose.  Anything less at this point is considered a disappointment.

Good analysis, Rob. I especially liked the little points about key games from a morale standpoint and home and road stretches. And it does matter to me between 1-8, but I’d rather make it to the Finals as an eighth seed than win the President’s Trophy and get knocked out in the second round again!

    Thanks sharks fan!

MJ - That’s exactly what I meant. LOL!! I think we’re all tired of early exits from the playoffs even though history tells us that it happens to even the best teams sometimes.
