Goaltenders and Shattuck-St. Mary's products mark Day Two of the 2009 Entry draft for the Minnesota Wild
Day 2 started off with a blockbuster trade, at least in terms of acquiring player's rights as Jay Bouwmeester's rights go to the Calgary Flames and in return the rights to former University of Minnesota star Jordan Leopold and a 3rd round pick. With a team in the Northwest Division already making a big splash will the Wild follow up with one of their own? Especially since their elephant in the room (cough) Marian Gaborik's rights still held by the team. The second day of the draft does not nearly have the same level of glitz and glamor as those made last evening during the first round. Teams do not even bother to go up to the podium to make their picks but instead simply make the pick from a microphone posted at their draft table. Howdy from Ottawa....draft night! No surprises through the top 3 picks. Can't believe Philly gave up Lupul, Sbisa, two 1st rounder's and a conditional 3rd to Anaheim for Pronger who has all but 1-yr left on his contract. The rumour now is Flyers F Daniel Briere is going to be moved (Montreal?) to make cap room for Pronger. The Ducks on the other hand save $1 mil. on the deal, get two roster players and two real high picks in a deep draft. 44 NHL Mocks Munched: Final NHL Database Consensus
We have completed the final update to the 2009 NHL Mock Draft Database. The Database is wayyyyy bigger than it was in 2008. We now have listed a whopping 72 NHL mock drafts, including 44 updated since June 19, 2009. 59 of the NHL mocks updated in the month of June. We than each and every mock draft site and writer for their contributions to the NHL draft coverage. We were extremely pleased to list their links and spread the word of the NHL Draft, which commences tonight at 7PM on TSN/Versus. A Week of NHL Playoffs Has Taught Us...
A week into the NHL Playoffs and only one series has been decided as of today -- a sweep of the St. Louis Blues by the Vancouver Canucks. I didn't think the Canucks would sweep, but I did believe they'd win.With their series win in mind from last night, we'll begin there.Vancouver wins 4-0 against St. Louis - Hockey fans knew at the beginning of this series that Roberto Luongo was good. The sweep just cements that fact. Luongo is a beast between the pipes and it's not out of the question to think that he could carry the Canucks to another series win. NHL Stock Market - All is Well on the Island
Rising New York IslandersThe Islanders had a pretty good weekend. While they only came away with one win, it was one of the better upsets of the season when they shut out the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. Joey McDonald got his first NHL shutout against his former team, stopping 42 shots throughout the game. Frans Nielsen and Josh Bailey had the only goals of the night, the former a shorthanded tally."It's an unbelievable feeling to get my first shutout in the NHL against my former team. NHL Rumor Mill - What Exactly is a Staged Fight?
Right now the 30 general managers of the NHL are meeting in Naples, FL to discuss a multitude of topics, but fighting will be at the forefront. The GMs would like to get rid of staged fights during games, which are predetermined bouts between two players that aren't in retaliation for anything; they just fight because that's what they're paid to do.At least that's what I think it is. The 2009 NHL trade deadline passed about three hours ago. The top story this year? ... well, take your pick. It pretty much depends on what team you follow.This time last year, the Pittsburgh Penguins made the splash of the day, acquiring Marian Hossa from the Thrashers for a slew of players.
