Finchum Dives To Triple Gold
Thomas Finchum is America’s next great hope in the sport of diving; if you haven’t yet heard of him, you will soon. The Indianapolis native burst upon the national diving scene in 2002, when he placed first at the Junior World Team trials in the 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform events. Despite his obvious talent, Finchum was, by the rules of the sport, too young at that time to advance to international competition.
Fast forward to the spring of 2007. Now 17 years old, Finchum won gold medals in both the 10-meter individual and 10-meter synchronized event at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix, held May 10-18 at the Outdoor Aquatic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In the individual 10-meter competition, Finchum captured the gold medal with an overall score of 497.40 points. China’s Yang Liguang took the silver medal with 489.00 points; Zhou Luxin, also of China, won the bronze medal with 446.50 points.
Later the same day, Finchum exhibited stamina that belied his slight stature as he teamed up with David Boudia of Noblesville, Indiana, to win the 10-meter synchro. {Their 434.64 points in Fort Lauderdale bettered the mark of 398.64 from a week earlier, when they grabbed the silver medal in synchro at the Canada Cup.} The silver medal went to Patrick Hausding and Christian Picker, who scored 388.71. Russians Semen Kokunov and Viktor Minibaev tallied 382.44 points to nab the bronze medal.
A week later, Finchum struck gold again at the Speedo USA Diving 2007 National Championships, held May 18-22 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Complex in Boyds, Maryland. This time, he came from behind to amass 512.05 points and defeat teammate Boudia, who held onto the silver medal with 500.40 points. Boudia actually maintained a slim lead midway through the competition, but Finchum raced past him with a powerful fourth dive that netted scores as high as a perfect 10. Finchum secured the victory by nailing a dynamic back 2 1/2 with 1 1/2 twists on his fifth dive; that attempt rallied perfect 10s from all but one judge.
With the Beijing Summer Olympics just one year away, the road begins to get crowded with competitors seeking to carve out a place of glory in their sport. On this side of the Atlantic, American Thomas Finchum starts to formulate a training regimen that will create a position for an American amidst a generation of dominant Chinese divers. Many observers already recognize the stylistic similarities between Finchum and another storied American diver: Greg Louganis. Finchum’s next challenge is to connect his Louganis-like presentation with the Louganis-like ability to perform at peak under the Olympic pressure of the whole world watching.

Thomas Finchum is an incredible diver in my opinion. I’m sure he will perform at peak when the Olympic pressure is on. Thomas displays pure grace and elegance in the air.
