5. Rodriguez attorneys plan to contest West Virginia buyout. Attorneys for outgoing West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez plan to challenge the coach’s obligation to pay the school a $4 million buyout. Rodriguez’s lawyers claim the coach was “fraudulently induced to sign a contract with false promises” when he signed with West Virginia–according a source close to the school’s athletic program, West Virginia failed to meet many of its promises to Rodriguez that were outlined in the contract. Rodriguez was introduced as the new head coach of Michigan yesterday.

4. Roberts admits to using steroids once in 2003. Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles, one of the players mentioned in the recently-released Mitchell Report, admitted today to a one-time usage of steroids in 2003. “In 2003, when I took one shot of steroids, I immediately realized that this was not what I stood for or anything that I wanted to continue doing,” said Roberts in a statement. In the 2007 season, Roberts hit 12 homers and 57 RBIs, stole 50 bases, and posted a .290 batting average.

3. NFL Pro Bowl rosters announced, Sean Taylor in the NFC starting lineup. Becoming the first player ever to be voted to the Pro Bowl posthumously, the Redskins’ Sean Taylor was voted as the starting free safety for the NFC Pro Bowl team. The undefeated New England Patriots have eight players on the AFC roster, and the Dallas Cowboys have 11 players representing their team on the NFC roster. The game will be held February 10, and the rosters were selected through voting by fans, players and coaches.

2. 23 FSU football players could be suspended for academic cheating scandal. According to the Tallahassee Democrat, 23 members of the Florida State football team, including 11 with starting experience, will be suspended for the Seminoles’ upcoming match against Kentucky in the Music City Bowl. The suspensions are due to an academic fraud scandal, in which a tutor gave players inappropriate help with an online test. Athletes in other sports at Florida State are also involved in the scandal, according to reports.

1. Clemens responds to Mitchell Report: I did not take steroids or HGH. In a statement released today, Roger Clemens denied allegations that former trainer Brian McNamee injected him with steroids 16 times from 1998-2001. “I want to state clearly and without qualification: I did not take steroids, human growth hormone or any other banned substances at any time in my baseball career or, in fact, my entire life,” said Clemens. “Those substances represent a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no athlete should ever take.”
