The Top Five for 12/23

The top five sports stories of the day:

5. Kobe becomes the youngest player to reach 20K points. Today, Kobe Bryant, at 29 years and 122 days, became the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 20,000 points mark–he reached that milestone on a three-pointer in the third quarter of the Lakers/Knicks game. Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain are the only other players to reach 20K points before the age of 30. Kobe scored 39 points in today’s game, as the Lakers defeated the reeling Knicks 95-90.

4. Clemens denies steroid use, will appear on “60 Minutes.” In a video posted today on YouTube and his foundation’s website, Roger Clemens repeated his denial of his alleged steroid use. Said Clemens, “I’m almost numb to some of these suggestions that I used steroids. It’s amazing to me that I’m going to lengths that I’m going to have to defend myself.” This video is his first public comment since being accused of steroid use in the recently-released Mitchell Report. “This report is simply not true,” he said. “I’m angry about it…it’s hurtful to me and my family.”

3. Everett returns to Buffalo for Bills’ final home game. Today, Kevin Everett made his improbable return to Ralph Wilson Stadium, after severely injuring his spinal cord four months earlier when making a tackle in a Bills/Broncos game. After being paralyzed from the waist down and on life support following the injury, Everett made a miraculous recovery in the ensuing weeks and months, and was able to walk under his own power at today’s game. He addressed the team prior to their game against the Giants.

2. Minnesota faces Washington in game with major playoff implications. In tonight’s Sunday Night Football game, the Vikings face the Redskins in a matchup of two teams battling for an NFC wild card spot. If the Vikings win tonight, they’ll clinch a playoff spot, and would eliminate Washington from the playoff chase–on the other hand, a Washington victory would mean the ‘Skins could clinch a playoff berth with a week 17 win (the Redskins will play Dallas in their final game of the season).

1. Pats remain undefeated; Eagles top Saints; Giants clinch playoff spot; Cowboys secure home field advantage. The Patriots coasted to a 28-7 victory over Miami, improving their record to 15-0 (the Dolphins, meanwhile, fell to 1-14 with the loss). Elsewhere, New Orleans’ playoff hopes were put on life support today, as Donovan McNabb’s 263 passing yards and three touchdowns led Philly to a 38-23 win over the Saints.

The Giants beat the Bills 38-21, and clinched a playoff berth with a running game explosion (Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 151 yards and a touchdown, while Brandon Jacobs rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns), and the Titans now control their own destiny in the AFC wild card chase.  And finally, a Green Bay loss to Chicago and a Saturday victory by Dallas over Carolina secured homefield advantage throughout the playoffs for the Cowboys.
