Larry Johnson Gives Questionable Financial Advice
Chris Mottram of The Sporting News and Mister Irrelevant went down to Arizona this week, likely anticipating to merely report on the various events surrounding the Super Bowl–at least, I doubt he expected to be the recipient of enlightening, groundbreaking financial advice from none other than Larry Johnson.
When Mottram stopped to chat with Johnson at a media event and asked about the $300,000 dollar watch L.J. was sporting, the Kansas City running back dished out some guidance on how the average Joe can get his hands on some bling of his own. Here’s Chris’ conversation with Larry:
ME: Seriously, man, how much was that watch?
LJ: About 300?
ME: Dollars?
LJ: Thousand. They only made three of them in the world.
ME: $300,000? I’d have to spend 10 years worth of pay to buy that.
LJ: Or you could deal crack and get it in three weeks.
Man, I feel like a loser now. I just bought a $10 dollar Timex the other day, completely unaware of how quickly and easily people can get their hands on a $300,000 dollar watch.
One of the things Will Leitch argues in his book, “God Save the Fan,” is that Gilbert Arenas is better for the NBA than LeBron James–because unlike King James, who commonly acts robotic in the public eye, Arenas isn’t afraid to show some personality (for proof of this, look no further than Arenas’ blog). With that in mind, I just became a Larry Johnson fan. Players like Johnson and Arenas are a rare breed–they’re guys who have a sense of humor, and avoid the monotony and artificiality that usually surrounds the interactions of professional athletes with the media and general public.
