Coach Pop Rips Gasol Trade

Last week Pau Gasol was traded from Memphis to the Lakers for Kwame Brown (joke), Javaris Crittenton (4th string PG), Marc Gasol (Pau’s brother), future 1st round picks and Sixers’ assistant coach, Aaron McKie. Yes, it’s true. They traded another team’s assistant coach for a superstar PF. They didn’t even get the Head Coach in the deal and Memphis seems to have done the deal smiling and whistling like they got the better end–or they know something the Lakers and everyone else doesn’t.

San Antonio Spurs coach, Gregg Popovich, stood up and spoke out about this highway robbery:

“What they did in Memphis is beyond comprehension,” said Popovich. “There should be a trade committee that can scratch all trades that make no sense. I just wish I had been on a trade committee that oversees NBA trades. I’d like to elect myself to that committee. I would have voted no to the L.A. trade.”

The Lakers have become a top-4 team in the west with one deal giving up practically nothing. Kobe wanted out this summer because he believed management wasn’t making the effort of making the team into contenders. Now, he can’t stop smiling since he has his second best big man returning from injury soon. The Spurs reign on the throne may be coming to an end soon and Memphis may have sped up the process.

L.A. faces the Charlotte Bobcats tonight.
