Shaq and Bill Walton are Feuding
Shaq shouldn’t have made those claims in the first place, and if Phoenix does win the NBA Championship this year, Steve Nash and Amare will have a lot more to do with it than Shaq. The Diesel was once nearly impossible to defend, but his quickness is gone, and if he thought he needed rest playing with the Heat, he’s in for a big surprise when he plays with the Suns at full speed.
I respect Shaq for what he has accomplished; he’s right up there with Russell, Chamberlain, and Kareem for best centers of all time (although he will never be higher than 4th best among that group), but his best days are certainly behind him. We’ve seen guys who can play into their mid and late thirties, but Shaq’s numbers have declined steadily since Miami won the title a few years back. Teams don’t even have to employ the Hack-a-Shaq strategy anymore because of Shaq’s inability to score like he used to. Instead of rising up over people and slamming in right in their face, Shaq is now much more likely to try his little fade-hook in the lane that is frequently off the mark.
I admire Shaq for giving it a go in a system that is probably completely foreign to him, but as much as I never thought I’d say this, I agree with Bill Walton on this point.
