Ah, The Memories: Football, Racism, And Cigarettes
If, by chance, you were around for the 1958 NFL season, then this video should bring back a few memories. And if you’re like me and weren’t even around for the freakin’ 1970s, then you should get a few chuckles from this old-time NFL broadcast:
You’ve gotta love the blatant racism of the 1950s…in today’s world, it’s hard to imagine that the Redskins cartoon in that video was once allowed to be broadcast on national television. I mean, I still think the Redskins is a racist team name, but at least those kinds of obviously racist images no longer have a place in professional sports. Oh wait, nevermind.
Anyways, the best part of that video is the cartoon figures of the teams…many of which seem to have nothing to do with the actual team names. Why are the Cleveland Browns represented by a goblin wearing a helmet? And why are the Packers represented by a dude with an axe who’s trying to smack the Philadelphia Eagle?
Chris Schenkel closes the commercial by telling viewers, “The better the makins, the better the smoke.” Truer words were never spoken.
