Friday Rundown: The Boston Gay Community Likes Bill Belichick

Your daily random roundup:

  • I challenge someone to explain what on earth is happening in this picture. A Steve Urkel impersonator and Jerry Jones were dancing together at a Six Flags park, and I have absolutely no idea why. Based on that single image, it actually looks like Jones might be a decent dancer — but still, what gives?
  • If you’re in the mood for some classic high school humor, look no further than this high school hockey team’s program. Each player was given the opportunity to write his own biography for the program, and unsurprisingly, the majority of them ended up being sexually suggestive. A couple examples: One player said he enjoys “some meat between his buns” and is “feverishly working on his own secret sauce,” while another bio stated that one of the players is willing to “drop his pants for a quick buck.” I know one thing: The captains of my high school hockey team, Hugh Jass and Richard Cranium, would have never condoned such juvenile behavior.
  • Bill Belichick has had a lot to deal with lately — leading his team to 18-straight wins before gagging in the Super Bowl, being constantly under fire from the Spygate controversy, and maintaining his status as the most hated coach in the NFL, just to name a few. Now, he’s on the cover of Boston’s premier gay magazine. So, is Belichick the first NFL head coach to come out of the closet? Nope…according to the magazine’s publisher, he was put on the cover because “he is currently the most recognizable coach in the New England area” (the subject of the issue, by the way, is if Boston is prepared to accept an openly gay athlete).
  • Here’s what I don’t understand: Why Belichick? If Queer Eye for the Straight Guy has taught us anything, it’s that gay men are a helluva lot more fashion-conscious than straight men. So why would this magazine decide to put a dude who wears old hoodies with the sleeves torn off on the cover? Indeed, he’s in desperate need of a makeover from the fab five.
