Pittsburgh Pirates Games To Feature Losing, Obesity

This is just depressing:

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they will offer an All-You-Can-Eat seating section during specific games for the 2008 season. Fans will have an opportunity to buy tickets for the All-You-Can-Eat section for every Sunday through Thursday home game, excluding Opening Day. Menu items include: hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, salads, popcorn, peanuts, ice cream and soda.

Well, so much for fighting the obesity epidemic…let’s all head down to PNC Park and gain a pound or ten, while watching a team that hasn’t had a winning record or made the postseason since 1992.

Anyways, from a business standpoint, this isn’t a bad move by the Pirates. As Bugs & Cranks points out, this is the perfect way to distract fans from the agony of yet another losing season in Pittsburgh…the people in the All-You-Can-Eat sections will be so busy stuffing their faces with burgers and nachos that they’ll hardly notice what’s happening on the field.

I’ve never sat in one of these sections, but I think it’d be an interesting experiment. How many boxes of popcorn could one eat during the course of a baseball game? How ill would one become the day after sitting in an All-You-Can-Eat section? How many vomiting episodes would occur to someone who spent a few hours indulging in nonstop ballpark fare?
