Video: Tornado Interrupts SEC Tournament
Via Fark, here’s video of a tornado delaying the Alabama-Mississippi State game at the Georgia Dome last night. At roughly the :20 mark, you can hear a train-like noise as the storm closes in on the stadium, and about 50 seconds in, the people in the stands start rapidly leaving their seats. The employees of the Georgia Dome deserve tremendous credit, as they seemed to do an excellent job of keeping this situation under control and maintaining calm.
MVN’s Sean Grace, who lives in Atlanta, penned a must-read article about the night of severe weather:
As the sun comes up the visual reality of the situation is graphic. Chairs originally located within the Omni hotel sit in the middle of Marietta Street. Hundreds of cars have been destroyed or severely damaged as have some buildings. Debris is everywhere. Landmarks such as the towers in Centennial Park have fallen. Insulation from God knows where has relocated to the trees and roads of downtown.
As the sun comes up, this area of constant activity is eerily quiet. Faces show distress but also relief. This could have been worse. This could have been catastrophic.
Also worth checking out today is an excellent photo essay from The Sporting Blog’s Spencer Hall, who was in attendance last night at the Georgia Dome and snapped a few pictures of the devastation. His pictures offer a great idea of the sheer extent of the damage this storm caused.
