Scheduling conflict means NFL season may kick-off 90 minutes earlier

According to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, the league is talking to NBC about moving the kickoff time for the 2008-2009 season opener, scheduled for the evening of September 4th, up by an hour and a half to avoid a conflict with the telecast of the Republican National Convention.

The RNC, unlike the Democratic National Convention which is scheduled for August 25th-28th, figures to simply be a formality, with the party’s Presidential nomination already sealed-up for Arizona Senator John McCain.  Still, the NFL is hoping to avoid a scheduling conflict with the final night of the Convention to the extent that it can.

The proposed solution will move kickoff for the season opener — which will take place at the Meadowlands and pit the New York Giants against an opponent to be announced on Monday — from 8:30pm to 7:30pm Eastern time.  The NFL will announce the rest of its schedule sometime in April.
