Mindy McCready Confirms Report of Clemens Affair

Christ, the Roger Clemens saga has a knack for always being able to get uglier. The New York Daily News reported on Monday that Clemens had a 10-year extramarital affair with country singer Mindy McCready; a romance that began when McCready was 15 years old and Clemens was 28.

The Daily News reached McCready for a comment after publishing the initial story, and the singer confirmed that she, indeed, was involved in a serious relationship with the Rocket:

Barricaded behind tightly drawn blinds at her Nashville home Monday, country singer Mindy McCready confirmed a long-term affair with embattled pitcher Roger Clemens.

“I cannot refute anything in the story,” a tearful but resolute McCready told the Daily News, which broke the story at midnight Sunday.

An interesting detail from the report:

Sources told The News McCready also received hefty checks courtesy of Clemens - some in the amount of $25,000 - that were channeled to the singer through an intermediary.

Such an arrangement raises questions as to why Clemens would go through a third party to give money to McCready if she and the Rocket were just friends.

So, the Rocket was sending this girl thousands of dollars on a regular basis through a third party, and yet Clemens’ lawyer, Rusty Hardin, denies that the relationship was sexual. Uh huh.

If there’s a lesson to be learned from the Clemens drama, it’s this: Don’t mess with Brian McNamee. Dispute his claims about your steroid usage, and you’ll end up being revealed as someone who may have committed statutory rape.

Roger Clemens is in an absolute mess, and he has no one to blame but himself. Hardin and Clemens are completely overmatched, and stale, meaningless denials seem to be Roger’s only method of defending himself. If he had come clean from the beginning, this skeleton in his closet would never have been revealed.

I love baseball but baseball players as a group are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. Roger a great athlete but not a great nor a smart person. He should get in the Hall of Fame but place him closer to Ty Cobb rather and keep him away from heroes like Jackie Robinson.

Clemens can recover from the Mitchell Report debacle.

    Clemens can’t recover from this.

Once upon a time, I said, “If all of these athletes are innocent, they should sue the people accusing them for defamation.”

OK, OK. Now I TOTALLY get why they don’t. Everything in the universe can get thrown at you. You better be squeaky clean if you’re an athlete who sues for defamation, and that, Clemens ain’t.
