MVN Outsider interview with Colin Cowherd

MVN Outsider recently got the opportunity to interview Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio. These questions were submitted by various MVN Outsider contributors…

What’s your take on the role of bloggers in today’s news media, sports or otherwise? Are they still seen as “wannabes” in the industry?
They are emerging media. Some are more responsible than others.

You seem to be doing a lot of interviews with sports blogs lately, Scott Van Pelt Style and now MVN. Why is that?
People have asked me to do them and I’m willing. I’ve always been willing to talk to people if they ask.

You’ve become a controversial figure among sports bloggers, in light of issues involving The Big Lead and the M Zone. Is there any message you’d like to send to the writers of those two blogs, or sports bloggers in general?
I don’t react to how people react to me. I do a show and hope they enjoy it.

Would you ever consider starting a blog like your colleague Stephen A. Smith recently did? Why or why not?
I’d consider anything. I’m all for emerging media.

Are there any sports blogs you read regularly? If so, which ones? If not, why don’t you read blogs?
Big Lead, Deadspin both make me laugh daily. They are both clever. Love the headlines.

Why do you think that the perception of bloggers is that the vast majority “live in their mothers’ basement,” when it couldn’t be further from the case?
A lot of them are young men just starting out doing it from their home and not from a company, so there’s a sense they are out in the middle of nowhere shooting off a blog.

You were criticized for your remarks regarding the murder of Sean Taylor. In your opinion, should an analyst ever consider censoring his or her thoughts when dealing with a controversial subject?
I always try to be reasonable and give you my honest opinion. I’m not telling you how to think, I’m just telling you how I think.

You mentioned in the interview with SVP Style that you “leaned on well-respected African-American journalists before forming your opinion” on Sean Taylor. Do you feel that you need the acceptance of other black journalists before expressing a possibly racially-construed point? If not, what was the reasoning behind bouncing your ideas off those journalists?
I bounce things off a lot of people on a lot of different topics. I make a lot of calls and consider a lot of issues before I give opinions. So doing this wasn’t unusual.

Would you agree that you’re caught up in controversies a lot more often than most other sports media personalities? If so, is there a reason that you’re such a controversial figure?
I’m brutally honest and don’t pull any punches. I have strong opinions. Some people aren’t accustomed to that in sports talk radio.

Would you be interested in a possible Mike and Mike-style format for your radio show, where it would be simulcast on television in addition to being broadcast on radio stations across the country?
If they want to put my show on TV, I’m all for that. I’ll take any publicity.

The NFL, NBA and MLB all have different ways of handling team salaries. The NFL has a hard cap, the NBA a very flexible soft cap and MLB has only a seldom-used luxury tax. Is one way better than another, in your opinion?
In general, I don’t like salary caps but in sports they seem to work. I don’t like capping any person’s or business’s ceiling. But in sports it seems to be reasonable, especially considering there are a lot of small-market teams.

Best sports movie of all time?
Miracle.

What’s been the most memorable moment for you in your five years with ESPN Radio?
I don’t really have one. The Jimmy V Auction can be really emotional. Any time we do a smart, funny show I’m very happy on the drive home.

Thanks to Colin Cowherd! You can catch his radio show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Weekdays 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. ET. (6 a.m. on the West Coast)

LOL, Cow*urd looks as twisted as he sounds. There are some things you’re better off not knowing in this world. What COLIN looks like is one of them.

Cowherd’s comments about Sean Taylor were neither reasonable nor justifiable, although it surely was his “honest opinion.”

His conjecture about Taylor was ill-timed and very insensitive. His reference to Taylor’s legal issues were simply inaccurate given the State of Florida’s extreme reduction of the original gun charge and acceptance of Taylor’s “no contest” plea. Any reference to the Commonwealth of Virginia traffic charge should have recalled that the trial judge threw the case out after watching the video from the police cruiser documenting the incident.

Implying that thug behavior lead to Taylor’s murder before any facts emerged in the story was irresponsible and reprehensible on Cowherd’s part.

I like Cowherd, I don’t always agree with his opinions, but he’s really entertaining and he seems like a cool guy. I think he puts on a great show.

Ya know, in plain old terms, Cowherd is a blithering idiot. He is never informed on any subject at all. Virtually all of his take s are comparing real life events as an analogy to sports.

You don’t marry the stripper, you just date her..type of stuff…

Real life and sports are not remotely comparable. I quit listening to ESPN Radio (KFXX) in Portland during his slot last year and I have never gone back to it.

If I want to get more stupid I will turn it back on….
