Four Teams Represented in All-Star Game Starting Lineups

Anybody notice a trend? 12 players make the starting lineups for the All-Star Games, yet only four teams are represented so far. Also, Patrick Kane was the only player to even come remotely close to one-million votes in the Western Conference, while all six starters from the Eastern Conference broke the one-million vote plateau.

On weekdays we highlight posts from Most Valuable Network that are considered to be a cut above the rest. This work is the best of MVN, the posts that made us think -- and we want to make sure you see it, too. Consider nominating a post for recognition via e-mail.

The ballots are in and the votes have been counted, and four teams must be happy with the way the 2009 NHL All-Star Game election results fell. DJ Abisalih considers the 12 men in the two starting lineups, all of whom are members of the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks or Chicago Blackhawks. While certain players were deservedly selected, many others were honored solely for the logos they wear on the front of their jerseys.

From The Bear Cave:

Now that voting by text message on a cell phone or Blackberry is an option, all somebody has to do is sit in front of their television, grab a beverage, and get a good thumb workout. If the thumb gets tired, take the rest of the night off, and do the same thing the next day. This is not exactly challenging, and it will certainly impact the results.

The bottom line is that there has to be a change, as this is becoming a flawed system and a worse popularity contest than before.

Having fired Eric Mangini after a late-season slump and near miss on a playoff berth, the New York Jets are in search of their next head coach. Joe Caporoso breaks down the leading candidates in addition to those fringe possibilities still on the team's radar.

From The Cockpit:

It would look great for the Jets if they could pull this highly coveted assistant, [New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo]. It is no secret how many other teams are interested in him, especially Denver. The Jets' main advantage is Spags' comfort level in the NY/NJ area.

Rumors have been flying left and right regarding the San Francisco Giants and their discussions with Manny Ramirez's camp. Nick Cannata-Bowman weighs the pros and cons of courting the lackadaisical slugger out of free agency.

From Giants Cove:

Pro: Sometimes Manny's quirkiness can be charming.

Con: When asked how he would describe Manny, David Ortiz replied, "as a crazy mother [expletive]." I kid you not, the guy actually said that.

The new year's arrival signals the opening of the 2009 Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour. Mike McIntyre brings us up to speed on the year's opening events.

From Tennis Diary:

A variety of changes to the ATP World Tour have been implemented this year to facilitate fan understanding and the player's health (and finances too!). Foremost amongst the changes are a re-classification of tournaments into ATP World Tour Masters 1000, ATP World Tour 500, and ATP World Tour 250 events.
