NBA Power Rankings: Cavs Finally Reach the Top

Cleveland's win over the C's coupled with L.A.'s loss was enough to get the Cavs into the number one position for the first time all season. The struggling Celtics fell another spot from last week, and there's also a new team occupying the basement at number 30.
1. Cleveland Cavaliers (29-6) - The Cavs get my top billing thanks to a pair of convincing wins, including one over the Celtics. I'll try not to jinx it, but this team absolutely has what it takes to go undefeated at home.
2. Los Angeles Lakers (30-6) - I bumped the Lakers down after losing to the Hornets and barely surviving close calls against the Warriors, Pacers and Heat. Next week's schedule is brutal.
3. Orlando Magic (30-8) - The Magic jump the C's after getting a pair of wins over the Hawks and yet another quality road victory, this time in San Antonio.
4. Boston Celtics (31-9) - Boston's pair of six-point wins in the home-and-home against Toronto was overshadowed by their poor showings at Charlotte, vs. Houston and at Cleveland last week.
5. San Antonio Spurs (24-12) - The Spurs' 1-1 week made me keep them at number five again this week, but a win over the Lakers tomorrow night might make me change my mind.
6. New Orleans Hornets (22-12) - The L's in Utah and at home to the Knicks were tough to swallow, but I still bump the Hornets up a couple spots after handing L.A. their second home loss.
7. Denver Nuggets (25-13) - Nice win over Miami last week with Dickie V. in the house, but Melo's absence will start to show when they have to play better teams, beginning this week.
8. Phoenix Suns (21-13) - Count out the Suns at your own risk, especially with the way that Shaq has been dominating the paint and sinking free throws.
9. Houston Rockets (24-15) - No T-Mac? No problem. Houston keeps on winning despite constant injuries. Rick Adelman deserves a lot of praise for keeping this team up there.
10. Portland Trail Blazers (23-14) - Portland can get above .500 on the road this week after completing a three-game road trip with visits to Philadelphia, New Jersey and Charlotte.
11. Utah Jazz (23-15) - Mehmet Okur is playing as well as anyone right now, and the Jazz have suddenly won five in a row and gotten right back on the heels of Portland and Denver.
12. Atlanta Hawks (22-14) - Atlanta's jump to number six last week might have been a little big, so after three straight losses they get an equally large drop in these parts.
13. Detroit Pistons (22-13) - Detroit's win streak was quickly halted by a pair of good teams, and it won't get any easier with a four-games-in-five-nights stretch coming up tonight.
14. Dallas Mavericks (22-15) - If Dirk continues to struggle offensively and Howard misses significant time, the Mavs could be in danger of falling far behind the coveted eighth place in the West.
15. Miami Heat (19-17) - Miami trudged through the toughest part of their seven-game road trip, but they'll be fine if they keep playing the way they did during their close loss in L.A.
16. Milwaukee Bucks (19-21) - Milwaukee jumps the Nets after beating New Jersey last week. Winning tomorrow at home against Miami could bump them up one more.
17. New Jersey Nets (19-19) - The Nets are unlikely to stay at .500 with Yi out for a few weeks and two games against Boston and one versus Portland coming up.
18. Philadelphia 76ers (17-20) - Things are pretty sweet in Philly right now, with the Eagles soaring and these Sixers streaking. When the two Andres are on, this team is fun to watch.
19. Toronto Raptors (16-23) - With all the perimeter talent that Toronto has, one would think they could get at least one win over the stagnant C's, yet Boston swept them for the first time since '95.
20. Charlotte Bobcats (14-24) - The injury to D.J. Augustin may have stalled a reported three-team trade with the Mavs and Thunder. Could throwing in Gerald Wallace get it done?
21. Chicago Bulls (16-22) - It's a lot to ask of a team to break through with a rookie point guard and a rookie coach, but this team is good enough to beat OKC at home, right? No?
22. New York Knicks (14-22) - The Knicks' win in New Orleans salvaged a 1-3 road trip, but the future won't be bright if D'Antoni can't get his team to start putting up more points.
23. Minnesota Timberwolves (11-25) - 5-0 in 2009 and 7-2 since Christmas, can the Wolves keep the league's longest active win streak going against D-Wade and the Heat?
24. Indiana Pacers (13-25) - After starting the year 2-1, Indiana has since lost three in a row despite Granger's continued excellence. Nothing a little home cooking can't solve.
25. Memphis Grizzlies (11-26) - With three losses last week all against sub-par teams, how do you think they'll do this week when they host Cleveland, Utah and Detroit?
26. Golden State Warriors (11-28) - Jamal Crawford's late three-pointer gave the Warriors their first win in '09, and more should come with their next six games at home.
27. Sacramento Kings (9-29) - Sacramento's win on Sunday over the Mavs was their first win of '09 and only their second victory over Dallas in their last 10 tries.
28. Washington Wizards (7-30) - Gilbert still isn't any closer to returning, and the Wizards don't seem to be any closer to winning, with five of their next six on the road.
29. Oklahoma City Thunder (6-33) - The Thunder still might have the league's worst record, but at least Kevin Durant has them getting some wins on a more regular basis.
30. Los Angeles Clippers (8-29) - The losing streak is now at 11 games, but the Clippers will have plenty of chances to get their fourth home victory with their next five at the Staples Center.
1. Cleveland Cavaliers (29-6) - The Cavs get my top billing thanks to a pair of convincing wins, including one over the Celtics. I'll try not to jinx it, but this team absolutely has what it takes to go undefeated at home.

The Patriot Act
Franchising Cassel is good business
Whether or not to franchise Matt Cassel boils down to what's good business and what makes the most sense for the Patriots organization. Let's not forget, in the business of the NFL, the players are resources, or commodities, and they are signed and released based on their value, and rarely do teams make emotional decisions about keeping or releasing players.More of the "Best of MVN"
