Right Now, Pitt is NCAA Basketball's Team to Beat
Randy Levine/Flickr.com
If you've ever played basketball competitively, you've almost certainly been to clinics. When things click, they click. It's fun to watch.
That's why I had so much fun at the Verizon Center on Saturday when Pitt annihilated Georgetown on national television. The Panthers put on a show, providing the rest of the nation with the blueprint on how to win in the Big East. Jamie Dixon's bunch outrebounded Georgetown, 48-23, pushed around the Hoyas on both ends and barely made mistakes.
But the biggest factor in Pitt's dominating win was its defense. Against Georgetown and its modified Princeton offense, the Panthers shut off backdoor cuts, filled passing lanes and forced the Hoyas into jump shots. Dixon's meticulous game-scouting abilities shone brightly for all to see, and Georgetown, a team riding high after a huge upset at Connecticut last Monday, had no shot once Pitt started scoring in bunches.
That's why Pitt is the best team in the nation right now. Right now.
North Carolina spent Sunday night turning the ball over and shooting miserably. That's how Boston College scored the biggest upset in recent college basketball history, beating the Tar Heels, 85-78, in Chapel Hill.
At this point in the 2008-2009 season, there's a clear way to beat North Carolina, albeit nearly impossible: Challenge every shot (and hope they go cold), turn them over and stick with them on the glass. It's not easy, but it can be done -- Wayne Ellington could just as easily miss 12 shots as score 20 points, Tyler Hansbrough could be the only Tar Heel producing, etc. That's what happened Sunday night, and North Carolina lost its first game of the season.
But show me the way to beat Pitt. There are just as many elite scoring options as North Carolina on the Panthers roster. Pitt's Big Three -- DeJuan Blair, Levance Fields and Sam Young -- can do a lot of damage. But highly effective role players like Tyrell Biggs, the quintessential "glue guy" who does a little bit of everything, defensive stopper Jermaine Dixon, explosive athlete Gilbert Brown and rapidly improving Brad Wanamaker all make their own presences felt.
Pitt can win multiple ways. It beat Florida State and Washington State despite shooting poorly, using its defense and rebounding to grind out wins by holding both clubs under 50. The Panthers can win in style -- they've hung 80 or more points on opponents seven times in 14 wins. But Pitt is at its best when there's a combination of those styles: a grinding defense paired with rugged rebounding and a transition game as good as anyone's.
What's more, there's a big difference between this Pitt club and all the other teams that have flourished in the past eight seasons under Jamie Dixon and his predecessor Ben Howland -- Pitt's halfcourt scoring. Ken Pomeroy's ratings at kenpom.com say Pitt has the fifth most efficient offense in the country. So, while the Panthers cut off passing lanes and rebound like their lives depend on it, they're playing elite-level offense, too.
That's why you can't look at the 08-09 Panthers the same way you've looked at the old Pitt teams. And that's why Pitt is the best team in the country right now. You don't just come to the Verizon Center and put on a clinic against a Georgetown team that hasn't lost at home in 29 games and just won convincingly at Connecticut
That is, unless you're college basketball's team to beat.

Yanks Versus Sox: In Depth
Even though we've built a top squad here, the Sox and Rays are still neck-and-neck, and the era where we could rely on money and mojo to put the Beantowners in their place is long gone. It should be a great season. We can't take the playoffs for granted the way we used to, but we should revel in the epic battle of what should be a classic race for the A.L. East crown.More of the "Best of MVN"

I agree this Pitt team is the best of the Howland/Dixon era.
But here's an idea of how to beat them: Get Blair into foul trouble EARLY. Dixon does not have a guy on the bench that can replace Blair.
Pitt can still overcome that against most teams, but not all the time. That seems like the best bet to me.

Okay? Obviously Pitt is the team to beat because they're No. 1 in the nation. Thanks for stating the obvious...
All North Carolina's loss proves is that like every other year, there is parity in college basketball. There's isn't one dominant team that is world's above everyone else. There isn't one powerhouse that is going to win every game. That's never going to be the case.
As for your claim "show me how to beat Pitt," I don't know whether to take this as sarcasm or go on a five page rant on how you can beat the Panthers. Spreading the floor and attacking the middle of their defense is one way. Notre Dame does this exceptionally well and the Irish will cause several matchup problems for Pitt. Harangody and Blair cancel each other out and ND's guards are much better at knocking down shots from deep. Will Notre Dame beat Pitt? I'm not sure. Can it be done? Yes.
Every team has weaknesses. Every team has faults. Hell, do you really think that Boston College is better than North Carolina? Absolutely not. And when Pitt loses a conference game to Marquette or Cincinnati, it will be marked down as an off-day and nothing more.
When Pittsburgh loses and concedes the top spot, I better see an article claiming that the new No. 1 team is basketball's team to beat. Anything less will just prove this article as biased.

Jeff Greer lol.
The other day you wrote:
"There just isn't another team even close...
While hundreds of lesser wannabes bludgeon each other back on Earth, the Tar Heels will be laughing their way to a national title. No one can touch the Heels. Not UConn. NOT PITT. Not Oklahoma. Not Duke. Not Wake Forest."
Now all of the sudden, Pittsburgh is the team to beat? Did that one Boston College game really swing your opinion that much?
Stick to something else, not college basketball.

Patrick -- Notice that I said, "Right now." I still think UNC will win the title. I still think UNC will be the toughest team to beat IN MARCH. The point of the column is that Pitt is playing the best basketball in the country right now, there aren't many holes to expose and it's about time Pitt gets recognition for that. And Sam, that's why this Pitt team is so much better than the one that lost at ND last year.
Pitt is the team to beat right now in college hoops. I know I said I didn't see anyone beating UNC. I'm still shocked BC beat 'em. And yes, UNC losing on its home floor to an NIT team is embarrassing and does change my opinion that much. If Pitt lost on its home floor to Providence or Cincinnati, I'd be just as surprised.
(And, in fairness, it should be mentioned that both James and I wanted to argue that UNC could be beaten, but I played devil's advocate.)
