Yahoo! Sports first reported this afternoon that the Boston Celtics and Point Guard Rajon Rondo have reached a five year, $55 million dollar extension agreement. By signing the extension today, November the 2nd, the Celtics were able to meet the deadline for extensions from players drafted in 2006 and avoid that Rondo becomes a restricted free agent next summer.
This is a very important signing for the Celtics’ future. By signing Rondo, Danny Ainge guarantees him as a transition piece between the championship team and whatever the new team comes to be a couple, triple of years from now.
Almost all the teams will have at least $10 million dollars in cap space next summer and since guys like LeBron James and Dwayne Wade are not expected to leave their teams, players like Rondo become the focus point for desperate teams to start offering tons of money.
With this old team, Boston couldn’t afford to lose Rondo who is turning into one of the most complete Point Guards of the league and that’s why what Ainge tried to do on the offseason was weird however with this extension it’s safe to believe that Rondo is the franchise player from now on.

Huge Huge signing. Is there anybody who can beat the Celtics this year? I really do no think so.
