Passion and Pride Press Pass 11-23-07

The Sixers get back on the court Friday night in Detroit as they face the Pistons. It will be a homecoming for "Worst-case Willie", a.k.a. "Garbage Time Green" - he went to Detroit Mercy. Of course, it's also another chance for us to watch Pistons with Philadelphia ties - Coatesville's Rip Hamilton, North Philadelphia's Rasheed Wallace and Strawberry Mansion's Flip Murray. The game starts at 8pm Eastern and will be broadcast on ComcastSportsNet and 610WIP.

Tuesday's loss left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I posted this in the comments of Aarick's post on the Wizards game, "Iguodala doesn’t want to call out his coach [or GM], so here at Passion and Pride - we’ll do it for him. We’ve got his back. When he said that they need to make a move, then clarified it with the starting lineup as opposed to a trade, like all things Sixers with trades, that part is a “NO COMMENT”. Of course, a trade wouldn’t hurt. But at this point, it is unlikely. Carney and Green need to go. [Iguodala] would be a bad teammate to say so. Andre Miller needs to play better. He should go, but I don’t know about getting back Jason Williams in a Miami Heat trade. The market is not too hot for Miller, so to trade him now would be premature. We’ll have to suck it up with him for now."

The rumor right now as told to me by Passion and Pride's Sean Watts is Andre Miller and Rodney Carney to the Miami Heat for Jason Williams and Daequan Cook. Ironically, the Sixers drafted Cook in June and traded him to the Heat for Jason Smith. Cook would be a much better option at shooting guard than "Worst-case Willie," but Jason Williams would have to come in as the backup to Lou Williams or at least play less than Lou.

Philadelphia Inquirer's David Aldridge says that the Sixers should seriously consider a Miller trade, but it wouldn't be Miami. His destination for Miller would be Cleveland, which makes sense when you think about it. They can offer the rights to Varejao in a sign-and-trade, and both teams have enough spare parts to make any deal work. I doubt we could land Gibson, but Shannon Brown is likely. With Varajao and Miller as the centerpieces to the trade, I believe it would work out for both sides. However, the Sixers already have their Varejao in Louis Amundson, so I'm not sure the upgrade over mop-up players is worth dumping Miller at this point.

Until we hear otherwise, we're going into games with the roster we have. Tony Dileo said there wouldn't be any changes until 20 games have been played, so let's see what develops over the next few weeks. Lou Williams is trending up into a starter's role, Rodney Carney is losing minutes to Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith is getting increased minutes backing up both Evans and Dalembert. Iguodala has not been shooting the ball well, but has been cutting down on turnovers. However, opposing shooting guards are scoring at will on the Sixers, and that includes your Morris Petersons and DeShawn Stevensons of the league. Just imagine what the Billups-Hamilton backcourt will do. Chauncey had 10 assists on Wednesday against the Knicks - IN THE FIRST QUARTER ALONE. I expect him to pick us apart in a similar manner.

SIXERS VS. PISTONS MATCHUPS (GAME PREVIEW):

Miller vs. Billups - Advantage Pistons. Miller can make this battle close if he gets back to playing more like a point guard, but he needs the players around him to be in sync and they haven't been. Look for Miller to continue his average play while Billups gets the ball to Hamilton and the big boys early and often.

Green vs. Hamilton - Advantage Pistons. This is such a lopsided matchup, that it should say "Pistons times two". It's like playing two on one here. Of course, when Willie plays well, he's playing one-on-one. For "Worst-case Willie," the best he can hope for here is a draw.

Iguodala vs. Prince - Advantage Sixers. This will be close. Iguodala needs to play well, and we're thinking that he'll be letting out his frustrations on the court. Tayshaun Prince always plays out of his mind against the Sixers. If he becomes a go-to guy at some point in this game, then he might end up outplaying out best player. This matchup is our best chance.

Evans vs. McDyess - Advantage Pistons. McDyess is averaging 10 points and 7 boards. Evans plays for the other team on the offensive end. McDyess plays both ends of the floor. Evans will try to make up in rebounding what he lacks in skill, but they will need some offense from the power forward spot here. Evans shouldn't play more than 20 minutes.

Dalembert vs. Wallace - Advantage Pistons. Sammy D started the season well, but has been rather silent in the last few games. He should break out a little with Rasheed coming off tweaking his knee on Wednesday, but Nazr Mohammed will spell Rasheed and he is another guy who seems to save his best games for his original NBA team. If Dalembert stays out of foul trouble, he could swing this matchup our way. If Rasheed is healthy and hitting from deep, then forget it.

Sixers bench vs. Pistons bench - Advantage Sixers. Flip Murray, Jason Maxiell, and Jarvis Hayes notwithstanding, the strength of the Pistons is with their starting five. The strength of the Sixers lately has been the rookies and Lou Williams. Limiting Evans minutes will give Smith and Young more time and Lou Williams will be called on again to pull this game back out of oblivion. If we can make it a game in the end, fresh rookie legs might make the difference. However, the Pistons veterans will make sure this game is put away early.

BONUS MVN BASKETBALL COVERAGE:
  • Cavalier Attitude Poll (CAP): What is the Cavs’ Biggest Weakness?

My comments: Right now, Gibson is really the only competent guard on the roster. I've always been a proponent of playing LeBron at point, and with Gibson on the court, LeBron plays more of a facilitator's role than the young shooter. If you surround him with shooters on the perimeter and rebounders on the interior, that team is near impossible to beat. The Cavs only have half of that covered right now.

  • Sizing up a solution for the Wiz in Gil’s absence

My comments: Blatche played out of his mind against the Sixers, and if he continues to play that well, it makes sense for the Wizards to go big. They used a lineup of Pecherov, Haywood and Blatche in the frontcourt this preseason and it seemed to work well. The solution for them without Arenas has been Antonio Daniels playing near flawless basketball. They are riding a six game winning streak.

  • Clippers upset Nuggets with skeleton crew

My comments: The Clippers can sneak up on people this year. Sam Cassell, Cuttino Mobley and company can play. Whether or not they can compete on a nightly basis remains to be seen. I really like Corey Maggette and his ability to get to the line. It will all come down to Chris Kaman this year. If he can be a force in the absence of Elton Brand, they will have a shot to make the playoffs.

  • Be Thankful …… It’s 2007

My comments: Celtics fans sure have a lot to be thankful for this year. His initials are "KG". Rondo has responded well at point, but the lack of depth could creep up on them later in the year. Those comments from Jackson were retarded though. The Warriors got enough to worry about with their poor start.

  • Milwaukee stops Kobe and the Lakers

My comments: I was surprised to see that Jesse wasn't happy with Mo Williams taking 17 shots. He's a good shooter, but when you've got guys like Michael Redd and, um...well...isn't Mo the second best shooter? Simmons might be slightly better, and who knows about Villanueva and Yi. Sometimes the pass you can make is a shot.

  • Happy Thanksgiving from the Beale Street Beat

My comments: I am thankful for Thomas and Michael on the Grizzlies beat. Where's Jason? Last year when I decided I should adopt a Western Conference team to root for as a way to deflect my disappointments with the Sixers, I chose the Grizzlies for the Philly connections with Kyle Lowry and Hakim Warrick. That connection got stronger this offseason when the Griz hired former Sixer Marc Iavaroni to be their head coach and Billy King draft Memphis native Thaddeus Young.

  • GameThink: Giving Thanks

My comments: Passion and Pride newcomer Sean Watts drops a solid debut on Thanksgiving Day and we're delighted to have him. I am thankful for his vision of the future. It's a vision I think we all can embrace, but the current iteration of that vision is downright embarrassing. Hopefully, the Sixers respond well to the adversity. Welcome aboard, Sean!

  • Happy Thanksgiving from Passion and Pride

My comments: Ok, so T.O. and the Cowboys had no problem with the Jets. Next week, they play the Packers team that beat the Lions yesterday. I'm going to be tuning in to that game and rooting on Brett Favre and the Pack to take down the Boys of D. Other than that, it was a great Thanksgiving.

  • “Potentially” giving up on “upside”

My comments: Reading this article from Bull Riding's Erick Ward discourages me from giving Thaddeus Young the benefit of the doubt. It's hard to know anything about a rookie, but you learn much more about them in their second year. Even with "potential," you should see some improvement over the course of a year. This is why I've all but given up hope in Rodney Carney. While Ward laments the 2006 draft class for the Bulls, I wish we took Ronnie Brewer at 13 instead of making a deal with his team to swap picks 13 and 16.

  • Thanksgiving All-Star Picks

My comments: Michael Montgomery gives thanks on the Raptors Den and I have one ultimate thanks for Raptors fans. Thank God that Bryan Colangelo is your GM. Who else would find guys like Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon and revive non-existent NBA careers. T.J. Ford is out with a stinger and Calderon steps right in without missing a beat. But the funny thing about that is who backs up Calderon - Darrick Martin. The former UCLA point guard is still in the league. He should have been bounced a decade ago and it could be him instead of J.R. Holden leading Russia to a Euroleague title. Instead, he's on the Raptors "on-call" list for point guard play. Toronto, you deserve it after the Vince Carter falling out, Jalen Rose and Alonzo Mourning spurnings, and general ineptitude from Rob Babcock. Too bad you have to play in our division!

wow, you guys are doing an impressive job with this blog, great stuff indeed, I take my hat off to P&P, really

Tonight I expect another bad loss, -18, -20... Pistons traditionally enjoy kicking our asses, and do that pretty easily

seriously, matchups with this team have always been a nightmare, I only see a slight advantage at C, if Mc Dyess plays there vs Sammy (to me Rasheed is the PF)

IMO Prince has an edge over Iggy, especially in this moment

and thanks for mentioning my blog in the previous post, that was a nice surprise

I'll try to watch the game live, later guys

I expect Billups to go off tonight and for Rip to run Wilie Green tired through a plethora of screens. Rasheed should dominate the matchup against Dalembert but I expect Dalembert to atleast give Rasheed something back. If Igoudala can escape the long reach of Prince than he should hit for over 20 tonight but another loss is what I foresee for young Sixers.

I was only able to watch short stints, but I guess Mo really got to them at practice. Either Rip ad Chauncey were off or Andre Miller, Lou and WG shut em' down. Surprisingly, Mo only went with Thaddeus Young, Jason Smith and Lou off the bench. Even more surprising is the DNP-CD to Rodney Carney. If we are shopping him around, I don't know if that's the best advertisement. We got back easy baskets and fast break points which is nice to see. We played well enough to get a win yesterday and hopefully tonight we can pull out a victory against GSW.
