Thoughts on Jay Bruce

It is becoming more and more popular around Reds nation to make Jay Bruce the new whipping boy and compare him to Adam Dunn. I can certainly see the comparisons. There are those who have already determined he's a bust and the Reds should trade him. Most are calling for a demotion to AAA Louisville.

I am as frustrated by his lack of development as everyone else, but I call for everyone to be patient. Each player is completely different from another. The Jay Bruce-Adam Dunn comparisons are, in my opinion, ridiculous.

Do I think he could use a stint in Louisville? Yeah, probably.

Will I huff and puff and fold my arms and hold my breath until it happens? Uh, probably not. Jay Bruce is in his FIRST FULL YEAR in the Majors. He's going to struggle...you know like Homer Bailey has for what seems like five years???

Give the kid some time to learn and adjust. HOPE he makes some adjustments. If not, then yeah, ship him back to Louisville and tell him what to work on. When he works on those and makes some improvements, bring him back up and hope it's for good.

Jay Bruce strikes out WAY too much. Jay Bruce has way too many bad at bats. Jay Bruce has a long way to go. But Jay Bruce plays pretty good defense and has a rocket for an arm that is also pretty accurate in the process.

One more thing...Jay Bruce is also just 22 years old. If he's still struggling like this in a few years then you can make more accurate comparisons to Adam Dunn and the fact he never got better and didn't make adjustments..then trade him to the Nationals or wherever.

Give the kid a break! I'm not a Jay Bruce apologist, but good lord give him a chance before you throw him to the wolves.

Big Weekend Series

I know it's been something like a month since I've written here, and even more since I've written anything worth while (if ever), but I've been relatively busy. That is, relative to a person who does nothing. The summer's made me lazy, but I'm over it and I'll be around more. Anyway, shifting the blame off myself, you have to admit, the Reds haven't been the most interesting ball club lately. Of course Votto's back, and as of yesterday afternoon we're 2 games out of first with a big opportunity to pull ahead this weekend against the Cardinals, but other than that, there hasn't been much to get worked up about, good or bad.

It looks like Homer could be back for a prolonged stay, but I don't really care too much about that. His command has been off in his limited appearances, but even if he does get it together, I think the Reds are going to need lots of offense (a tall order) to pull off a victory anytime he's on the mound. There's also the Dickerson v. Taveras debate. Dickerson obviously has the numbers advantage so far, not to mention his amazing defense in centerfield (Baseball Tonight couldn't get enough of Dickerson when he got those few starts awhile ago), but it doesn't look like Baker or the front office are going to change their minds for the long term. Sure, Dickerson will get his playing time, either in center or left, but money is money and orders are orders, so just let Taveras play and work himself out of his slump, which he is slowly but surely doing.

Votto's return prompts the question of when Ryan Hanigan will get any significant amount of playing time. He certainly proved himself in Votto's absence, as did Jonny Gomes from the DH spot in interleague play. Finding playing time for these players and good offensive combinations that can actually score runs are two huge problems looming over the second half of the season. But this problem isn't really a problem. Better to have too many people than too few.

Hopefully the Reds will be able to continue beating the Cardinals at home this weekend and occupy one of those spots at the top of the division. Once there, I think the Reds will be rejuvenated after the All Star break, then slowly extend that division lead into the fall. Of course there are some problems, but things are starting to fall into place: the bench players are contributing, the first baseman is an MVP candidate, and the starting rotation should be back to normal sometime after the All Star break. Granted, there's a big road trip before the break, but it's in the east against the Phillies and the ailing Mets. My 7-man baseball team with no uniforms and little to none athletic ability could beat the Mets right now, and the Reds played the Phillies hard back in May. This is a scrapping baseball team with lots of upside, but consistency is key to winning and the Reds haven't exactly proven to be consistent just yet. Even so, they've been contending all season long and will continue to do so, but from the 1st and 2nd place positions.

End the Taveras experiment!

Say one thing for Dusty, he's one loyal manager. Loyal to a fault sometimes. In his latest stubbornness he's holding out for what seems like two months to see if Willy Taveras is ever going to snap out of this Corey Patterson-like funk.

Memo to Dusty: he's not going to! End the experiment. Put Chris Dickerson in center!

If we remember, Dusty was very loyal and patient with Dickerson while everyone was clamoring for Laynce Nix to play everyday. I think he waited about two weeks too long to make that move, but he eventually did. Now is the time (well, two weeks ago would have been a better time) to make the move and put Dickerson in center for Taveras.

Willy got off to a great start, but shortly after his torrid series in Arizona something happened. He stopped hitting basically. He's been TERRIBLE!! I mean I'm pulling for the guy, but he can't do anything right now. Terrible at bats, strikeouts, no walks, obviously no steals.

It's time for a change of pace. If Dickerson starts to struggle again, try Willy again...maybe. Or call Stubbs up and give him a look.

There was a poll on Lance McAlister's site yesterday about what contract you'd rather eliminate if you could pick one. Willy's was the winner. Now, because it's only for two years, that wasn't the one I voted for. I voted for Arroyo simply because he's a .500 or maybe better pitcher who is too up and down for the money he makes, which is like $11 million a year for a couple more. For me, that's the one I want to see go away and give Homer Bailey a chance to sink or swim.

Back to the point...it's time, LONG past time, to end the Taveras trials.

Let Dickerson play. He's a MUCH better CF than LF and has been tearing the cover off the ball. WAKE UP, DUSTY!! Let's give the team a spark before it's too late.

Reds could be close to whole again

With tonight's exciting return of team leader, all-around stud Joey Votto, the Reds are one step closer to being a complete team once again. Edwin Encarnacion hit a 3-run bomb in his first rehab game Monday night. Edinson Volquez seems to be progressing toward his rehab and return.

The Reds are holding on for dear life right now. Yes, they're in 4th place. But they're only 3.5 games out and right at .500. With the return of Votto, EE, and Volquez, with the possible addition of Homer Bailey to the rotation replacing Micah Owings (or Bronson Arroyo if you believe the rumors) the Reds will be very close to full strength.

You could argue that with Alex Gonzalez out for the next month, the Reds will be better off with Jerry Hairston Jr playing shortstop. (I'd prefer not to see Janish there unless it's a defensive substitution.)

Either way, the team has somehow managed to hold on this far. One can only imagine how much better they might be with their opening day roster back together. As much as people love Rosales, he's just not the answer at third base right now. Maybe in a few years. He has really fallen off since his torrid start.

I for one will be very glad to see Ramon Hernandez back behind the plate. Well, I may be in the minority here, but he is still a better option than Hanigan who refuses to drive anyone in with RISP. But this is not about Hanigan...sorry.

Welcome back, Joey! Please let's hope it is for the long haul and we won't see anymore leaving the game in the bottom of the first or something along those lines.

We're not getting the whole story on Votto

Been absent on here for awhile, but I just wanted to throw this out there.

Votto going on the DL for "stress-related issues" has obviously confused more than a few people. At first glance your natural response is "Wtf!? Man up Joey, life is tough sometimes. Playing in the major leagues is stressful, get used to it," or something similiar. I've seen versions of this on message boards or blogs in the Reds internetland.

But it's painfully obvious that we're not getting the whole story here. I refer back to last season when Votto mysteriously went on the bereavement list. Later on we learned that it was because his father died. I was shocked honestly that this kid was able to play at all the rest of the season. I sure as hell would have had a real hard time doing it, especially as quickly as he was able to return. I gained some major respect for him on top of the already growing respect I had for him. But he was tight-lipped about it and so were the Reds on why he was gone, it was like a week or two after he came back that anyone heard why.

My point being, I think the same thing is going on here. So lay off the guy will you. "Stress-related issues" is no different than a political cover-up story. I know most fans do realize this, but for those who don't it's time to change your opinion.

The Reds have four new players after Day One of the MLB Draft. I will direct you to Doug Gray's RedsMinorLeagues.com for a better breakdown. But suffice to say we won't know about any of these players for a year or so, so there is no need to give any kind of grade or review on how good or bad the Reds did on the first day. Starting today and running through tomorrow, we'll see if Chris Buckley's staff can find some diamonds in the rough and re-stock the ever-improving farm system.

BETTER NEWS: According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, Reds first baseman Joey Votto is working out and feeling better. He may even go out on a rehab stint sooner than later. This is great news. The Reds REALLY need his bat in the lineup. I mean these guys have somehow managed to stay in the race without their leader...and let's not fool anyone, Joey Votto is this team's leader. Hurry back, Joey!

Setback: Edwin Encarnacion will not be returning to the big club for a while if at all. He apparently has had a setback with his wrist and had an MRI done to see the extent of the damage. He is with the team in Washington so maybe it's better news than everyone fears. Hopefully he can get healthy soon, too. It would be another boost to the team's depth.

Things that need to happen and soon...

I'm not trying to be negative, but enduring Sunday's ridiculous loss after the Reds had countless chances to win really irritates me. I know the Reds are not going to win the division. Unfortunately, they probably are not going to win the Wild Card. But, they could at least be over .500 this year. I believe they can do that.

So, in order for this to happen, I would like these moves made:

Mike Lincoln designated for assignment. Walt should just admit he made a mistake and let him walk. Bring up Viola or Roenicke so the bullpen can be whole again. Sorry, Mike, you had a really good 2008, but it's just not happening this year. You are a batting tee and the Reds cannot afford to keep you on the roster.

(This will be unpopular) Send Adam Rosales back to AAA Louisville. Hustle only gets you so far, Adam. I'm not comparing him to Ryan Freel because I do believe Rosales actually has talent. But, lately, Adam has REALLY seemed lost at the plate. He had not one but two chances to win Sunday's game with nothing short of a routine fly ball. He couldn't do that. Saturday night, don't be fooled, if not for a terrible throw by Fontenot, Bruce would have been out at the plate and Rosales wouldn't have come through. I love the kid's fire and enthusiasm, but he's not getting it done.

Nick Masset assumes the 8th inning. He shares it with Arthur Rhodes. David Weathers is NOT a setup man right now.

I know this one can't happen pronto, but Edwin Encarnacion, like him or not, needs to get healthy in a hurry. Jerry Hairston is not a third baseman. Yeah yeah the Reds win with him in the lineup, but he's not a third baseman.

Oh...Joey Votto, get well soon!!

Other notes...

Dickerson/Taveras: can Dickerson keep this up? I doubt it, but he's been pretty good of late. Does he inherit the centerfield job?

Does anyone have any faith in Alex Gonzalez or Paul Janish? Seriously...I think pitchers laugh when Janish comes to the plate.

The Reds are still two games over .500, and that's great. But, if they are to keep it up, things are going to have to change around here. Let's hope sooner than later.

Who pitches Saturday for Volquez?

Now that Edinson Volquez is back on the disabled list, the Reds need another starter. That spot comes back up again Saturday against the Cubbies. Who should get the nod?

Bronson Arroyo on three days rest? Homer Bailey? Nick Masset? Matt Maloney?

My choice: Matt Maloney.

I don't care that he throws puss (according to scouts). His ERA is 2.00 in AAA and he's been WAY more consistent than Homer Bailey.

I don't throw Bronson on three days of rest. Mainly I don't do that because you would then have to throw Cueto on three days rest unless you brought someone up.

So, that means if you bring someone up, it has to be Maloney, who has been very good lately and it would be his day to throw. Or you try Homer Bailey again.

Me, I'm kind of tired of seeing Homer throw four innings and 100 pitches, while walking a half dozen, then bitching about it being someone else's fault. What has he done up here besides remind everyone that while he does have potential, he is still a 22-year-old who doesn't get it yet? For all we know he could be Brandon Larson, a perfect AAAA pitcher. Great in AAA, terrible in the Majors. That's still to be determined.

I give Matt Maloney a shot. He's never had one. Homer has had a bunch. Let someone else take the chance and run with it. If he's terrible, fine. He at least got a taste of it. It'll make him better for next time he's up, hopefully.

The pitcher I don't even consider giving a spot start to is Nick Masset. Reason: why would you take him out of the role he's dominating right now? Why ruin that? He's rolling. Let him stay in his comfort zone. Let a starter start. Let the reliever relieve. Makes sense to me. Hopefully it will make sense to the Reds' brass in the next few days.

Who would YOU start? Why?

Biggest win of the year?

I went to bed after Dickerson three-hopped a throw to second base and still didn't get Pujols out after he apparently broke his ankle. btw...nice slide, Albert! Who taught you how to slide like that? I know Abner LaRussa didn't.

Anyway, Volquez came out after the first inning. The Reds already had lost three in a row and looked bored doing so in Milwaukee, then Dusty puts in Mike Lincoln. Get some extra sleep, right?

Well, the sucker that I am watched a little. Watched Rasmus smoke a homer to center. Game over, roll over and close your eyes. It'll be better in the morning with a good night of sleep.

Why can't I go to bed?? There's no way this team minus Joey Votto, Willy Taveras, EE, a hurting Brandon Phillips, and 8 innings from the bullpen can win this game.

I'm a little tired this morning, but damn was it worth it. I would have missed the Little Red Machine and its band of never-give-up ragtag players battle tooth and nail to pull out what could be viewed as the season's biggest win so far. Yes, it is only one win. Yes, they are still 1-3 on the trip. Yes, the bullpen is now somewhat depleted. But, they do have Bronson Arroyo going tonight and you know he'll at least give them five innings. He may give up 10 runs, but he'll at least give them five innings.

This team never ceases to amaze me. Somehow, someway, they found a way to win that game. Clutch two-out hits from Ramon Hernandez and Laynce Nix gave them the lead, and the Reds' killer bullpen never gave it back.

The Reds did it all without the benefit of a homer. They did it with execution, timely hitting, and putting the ball in play (Adam Rosales' sac fly).

Eight innings of relief?? What did the game go 16 innings again??? Mike Lincoln has taken his share of beatings (both on and off the field), and deservedly so. But, last night, he gave them three innings of one-run baseball. Then my main man Daniel Ray Herrera came up big yet again with his wide assortment of junk. He got Albert Pujols to ground into a double play. Let me say that again...Daniel Ray Herrera got the best hitter in the game of baseball to ground into an inning-ending double play. How?? Kid is awesome, that's how!!

After Herrera came the flame-throwing Nick Masset (thanks White Sox for giving up on this guy). Oh, memo to Mo Egger: Mo, I love you, man, but if the Reds have to DL Volquez, you DO NOT under any circumstances take Masset out of the role he's in. This guy is absolutely mowing batters down one inning at a time. I don't take any chances of screwing that up. I call up Matt Maloney and let him throw puss at the Cubs Saturday.

After Masset, the ever-steady Arthur Rhodes and Francisco Cordero, who gave us a little scare with the warning track fly ball off the bat of Ryan Ludwick. Reds win!! Holy crap!

Now, the boys have a chance. Tonight, Bronson Arroyo faces Brad Thompson who hasn't thrown in 16 days. How much can the Cards expect from him tonight? My guess is not much. Then you have Cueto against Douche, I mean Lohse. Followed by Harang, who has to get it going again soon, right? He'll face Chris Carpenter, who is 3-0 with a sub 1.00 ERA...but he's due for a stint on the DL soon, so we may get a break there.

Either way, the Reds will still be over .500 no matter what happens the rest of the trip. They just have to keep their heads above water and hope Votto, Taveras, EE, Volquez, and everyone else who is dinged up can get healthy very soon.

Good night...I'm going to take a nap. Go Reds!!

Votto to DL

The Reds placed Joey Votto on the 15-day DL today with stress-related issues, according to Mark Sheldon. This certainly is not a good time to be without our best hitter, but it's better now than later. It's not quite June yet, so the Reds will have some time to make up some ground in the division with Votto in the lineup if this road trip doesn't go all that well. Although they've been finding ways to win without Votto, I think that can only happen for so long.

It feels wrong worrying so much about the team and standings when there may be something seriously wrong with one of the best young players in baseball. I just hope everything goes well and he can get everything cleared up. But I'm sure he'll be able to bounce back soon enough and help get this team to the playoffs.
