Not a Lot of Hitting on Sunday
Mexican League:
Tomateros de Culiacan 5, Yaquis de Obregon 4
Culiacan came from behind, scoring 4 runs in the 8th inning on a sacrifice fly and a 3-run homer, to get the win. Neither of the Pirates' pitchers got into the game for Culiacan. SS Luis Cruz went 0-for-3 for Obregon, and was hit by a pitch to extend the inning in the 5th, when Los Yaquis had already scored 2 runs.
Algodoneros de Guasave 7, Venados de Mazatlan 5 (game 1)
LF Steve Pearce walked to lead off the 4th inning for Mazatlan, went to third base on a double, and scored on 2B Sergio Gastelum's RBI single. Another RBI single by CF Eric Reed brought in another run, and gave Los Venados a 4-1 lead. But Guasave came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning and another 3 in the 5th for the win in this 7-inning contest.
Guasave 6, Mazatlan 1 (game 2)
This one was also 7 innings. Guasave scored 2 in the 1st inning, and 4 more in the 2nd inning, including a 3-run homer. Mazatlan was held to 6 hits. Two came in the 2nd inning, when Robert Saucedo and 1B Brian Myrow (Padres) led off with back-to-back singles. LF Steve Pearce advanced Saucedo to third with a fly out, and Saucedo scored Mazatlan's only run on a ground out. Myrow doubled in the 7th inning, but was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score from second on a single. Pearce was 0-for-3 in this second game.
Dominican:
Gigantes del Cibao 7, Estrellas de Oriente 3
Los Gigantes were ahead 7-2 when Juan Perez took the mound to begin the 7th inning. Perez struck out the first Estrellas batter he faced, then gave up three straight singles to load the bases, and then walked in a run. That was all for him.
Venezuelan:
Leones del Caracas 5, Tiburones de La Guaira 4
C Carlos Maldonado led Caracas with 2 hits and helped to spark a game-tying 4-run rally in the 7th inning. Former Pirate 3B Jose Castillo walked to lead off the inning, and with two outs, Maldonado singled, moving Castillo to third base. An RBI single scored Castillo, and an infield single loaded the bases. Maldonado scored on a bases-loaded walk, and another singled scored two more runs. 1B Josh Kroger (Cubs) gave Caracas the go-ahead run with a solo homer in the 8th inning. Maldonado's batting average stands at .281.
Tigres de Aragua 8, Caribes de Anzoategui 7
LF Jose Tabata went 1-for-5 at the plate and former Pirate CF Rajai Davis was 0-for-2 with a walk for Los Caribes, while C Raul Chavez had an RBI single in 4 trips to the plate for Aragua. Los Tigres scored one run in the 3rd inning and added 3 more in the 4th. Chavez had the third straight hit to lead off that 4th inning, and he drove in the first run of the inning. Another RBI single plated two more runs, including Chavez.
Tabata picked up an RBI in Los Caribes' half of the 4th, as a runner from third scored on his ground out. After Aragua added a solo homer in the top of th 6th, Los Caribes came roaring back in the bottom of the inning, scoring 6 runs while sending 10 batters to the plate. DH Omar Infante (Braves) led off with a single, and Tabata reached on an error. A double scored Infante and moved Tabata to third base. Davis was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, and a walk forced in Tabata. Two more singles and a ground out brought in 4 more runs.
Aragua scored one run in the 7th, courtesy of a wild pitch, and the tying and go-ahead runs came in the top of the 9th inning, on three singles and a walk. Jonel Pacheco entered the game in the 7th inning, pinch-hitting for Davis (ground out) and then remained in the game in center field for the last two innings.
Rain postponed play in the Hawaiian Winter League for the second straight day.
